Odds and Ends: Burrell, Bradley, Abreu

Links for Tuesday...

  • RotoAuthority asks for your #1 fantasy baseball bust for 2009.
  • Keith Law calls the Pat Burrell signing a "major bargain," panning the Raul Ibanez contract by comparison.  River Ave. Blues says the recent Burrell and Milton Bradley deals prove that Brian Cashman was wise not to offer arbitration to Bobby Abreu.
  • Will the Rays have enough money to re-sign Rocco Baldelli now?  Buster Olney still thinks he will land with Boston.
  • Gordon Edes says Jim Hendry had a stealth dinner with Bradley during the November GM Meetings.  Edes adds that the Cubs believe Derek Lowe is too expensive.
  • Cool story about a guy trying to get an autograph on each card in the 1983 Fleer baseball card set.
  • Baseball America's Jim Callis has the updated '09 draft order.  Callis also weighs in on the broken free agent compensation system, which is up for discussion after the 2011 season.

Anyone think Abreu goes back to the Yankees at a reduced price?

I know they have an aging outfield (Matsui & Damon) along with a glut (Swisher & Nady) but I'd put Abreu above at least half of the four.

Swish as tradebait or a super sub.

If he can't get a starting job, I really hope Rocco signs with the Sox. I love that kid and as a NE native he'll love it here and so will the fans.

... Abreu wouldn't have accepted arbitration. At the time decisions needed to be made he was still thinking a multi-year deal for big bucks was available.

In the Edes link about the Cubs believing Lowe is overpriced, Edes says the Padres killed the Peavy to the Cubs trade at the meetings, not Hendry. That's the first time I've heard that, it was reported at the time Hendry decided the money wouldn't work - which I still think is true, trading 4-6 prospects and taking on $85 million is crazy, the Padres should be eating a huge chunk of that if they want quality players in return - from any team.

Jim Callis, made some good points, but I must differ with him and some things also. The draft compensation, should be scrapped totally, like he said, but must be reworked so the smaller market teams, can get fair compensation, for that year. or next. The penalty for signing another teams Class A Free Agent is a mess. Commisioner Selig, Owners, and Union, had better work together for the best interest of baseball. I will use this as example Toronto gets a 3rd.round pick for Burnett, the problem here is now the Yankees have a proven starting pitcher. How many 3rd. round picks even make it to the big leagues, even if he does it takes at least 2 yrs. (if exceptional), to make the bigs. Meantime Yankees already have a quality major league pitcher, contributing in the Majors.
My first suggestion would be something like NFL, 32 teams 32 picks in the first round, you have a one year of opportunity to sign that pick. No rollover, in the first round. More on this.

I would say Edes column is off. The Bradley dinner was not very stealth considering everybody reported the Cubs had met with Milton Bradley during the meetings.

Stealth dinner?

"which I still think is true, trading 4-6 prospects and taking on $85 million is crazy, the Padres should be eating a huge chunk of that if they want quality players in return - from any team."

Not when only 1 prospect is really good out of the 4-6 you mention. SD shouldn't be eating one cent of Peavy's contract. He is below market value as it is, it's not like we are talking about some number 3/4 starter making 85 million, we are talking about a top 10 pitcher in baseball, arguably top 5, on the right side of 30. If they would have to eat money to trade him, then why trade him?

MLB is the only sport where there is no trading of Draft Picks, this is outdated also. Teams that need to fill in spots of need should be allowed to trade picks. NFL has made this a big business for them, while MLB, has sat back and not done nothing to make this an exciting day.

Hmm baldelli might be good if his injury thing goes away or gets much better. I personally think gabbe kapler might be a safer choice or howabout this.. Andruw Jones as semi-low risk but high reward super 4th outfielder? Green monster would prob help hoim and he can play all outfield positions very well. just thought of this cuz im a braves fan too and Hes always been my favorite ball player. Id like to ee him go to either team..

I don't follow Callis' idea that just because the compensation system isn't perfect, that is should be scrapped.

Small market teams NEED compensation for being unable to sign their front line free agents. Sure, the system isn't perfect, but that's no reason to trash it entirely. Just because Milwaukee doesn't get full value for losing Sabathia is no reason to deprive them of ANY compensation for him.
