if heilman turns out even a fraction of what dempster did last year, i'll be a very happy cub fan.
tim, i can't remember, did you ever link to the story about pujols lobbying for manny in st. louis? i don't know if i saw that here or somewhere else. not that it'd ever happen, but it's a frightening thought.

That's funny, Bako didn't tell me about his potential deal with the cubs. I signed him yesterday to mow my lawn for the summer. He sucks at that too, but at least he comes cheap. I'm going to have some words for his agent, looks like he Furcal'ed me.

I think Heilman will improve over last year. He is better than those numbers in '08. Lou likes two leties in the rotation, if possible. Although, that leaves Cotts as the only lefty in the pen. It will be interesting to see if who wins the 5th spot. Early guess, I think it will be Heilman. The Cubs have Marshall, Heilman, Gaudin and Guzman...all can be swingmen, short or long. Then you will have Shark in AAA getting more work and fine tuning pitches. Wuertz the one out/inning guy I guess. Hopefully, Gregg can be good and Marmol is what we think he can be and the pen is more consistant now.
I just heard some sports talk mention Pujols wanting Manny. Maybe Albert is testing the Cards front office to see if they will spend a little bit.

I hate Paul Bako.

I'm guessing they are looking at Bako's experience and game calling over K. Hill. On ability, I think it is a wash. I would rather they kept the right handed hitting Blanco over the left handed hitting Bako though.

Why are you plugging your own articles?

Why shouldn't he? It's an interesting read.
No Overbay in the list, though? Ouch.

Great read on Heilman. Hope they are right.

I really hope you Cub fans don't get the same Heilman us Mets fans did. I must've lost years off my life watching him pitch.

He lost his favor in NY a long time ago... He should do well in Chicago... He has the tools, an fan base that is supportive beyond malcontent which is good because they shouldn't boo, and a team that is built to win which he didn't have in NY...
The only thing see him having difficulty with is Lou... He is impatient and that could pose problems...

A lot of Cubs fans are chuckleheads. They're more fickle than they are supportive. Remember Latroy Hawkins? This crowd does boo their own players, and have grown fond of throwing trash on their own field (if they're not busy talking on their cellphones).
I love the Cubbies; don't always love the Wrigley crowd.

"an fan base that is supportive beyond malcontent which is good because they shouldn't boo"
The same fanbase that wanted to murder a fan for catching a home run. Right.

^ What?

"The same fanbase that wanted to murder a fan for catching a home run. Right"
unless you're referring to bartman, who was trying to catch a foul ball, not a home run, and who has actually been almost universally forgiven by that fan base to the point that people are asking for him to throw out the first pitch at a game, i'm afraid i don't follow?

CitizenSnips- i agree, it's not neccessarily true he'll be accepted real well if he does poorly. Kind of on par for any passionate fan base.

"a team that is built to win which he didn't have in NY... "
Ha. I find this funny since Heilman helped contribute to the 28 or so blown saves last season. They Mets were built to win it was just that their bullpen gave up so many leads.
Posted by: CitizenSnips | January 30, 2009 at 05:15 PM
my point exactly...
Posted by: allabouthephils | January 30, 2009 at 07:55 PM
In 07 it was Schoeneweis, Heilman, Glavine, Mota, Sosa, Humber, the list goes on...
You would have thought that Minaya would have fixed those deficiancies in 08...
The team was not built to win, they were built to compete, but they threw all there eggs on the Santana train and it collapsed without a reliable bullpen... A lesson they should have learned in 07...
Posted by: allabouthephils | January 30, 2009 at 08:01 PM
allaboutthephils, that is absurd, ridiculous, and stupid. So if the Mets bullpen was "built to win", and they held onto the lead last year, does that mean Philly wasn't built to win? Now that the Mets fixed their pen, are they built to win? The Mets and Phillies both are built to win. One has to lose. If the Mets win the NL East this year, it doesn't mean the Phillies, the 2008 world series champions, weren't built to win in 2009. Very flawed logic. And I remember you being a good poster when you were around more back in the day.

The Phillies won by luck. That's not to say they're bad but man they got so many lucky breaks they really did not deserve to be in the position they did last year. Not even close.
