« Odds and Ends: Lowry, Kawakami, Lowe, Young | Main | Rosenthal On Lackey, Dunn, Young, Isringhausen »
12:42pm: Roch Kubatko heard the Zaun deal is "pretty much done" assuming he passes his physical.
8:36am: According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles are "closing in on a one-year deal" with catcher Gregg Zaun. Zaun's agent Dan Evans had been busy with the Kenshin Kawakami deal, but Zrebiec says the Orioles should have Zaun signed by week's end.
Zaun came up with the Orioles in '95 and was traded to the Marlins the following year.

Where does this leave Matt Wieters? Shouldn't he be starting this year or is Zaun the catcher until they 'Longoria' him?

The orioles are gonna "longoria" weiters. i like this move.

I think they want Zaun as someone to mentor him, but giving him a month or so to mash Triple A pitching has its benefits. Certainly you wouldn't want Wieters on the Opening Day roster, as then he could be eligible for free agency after 2014 rather than 2015.

No, I want him on the Opening Day roster so he can be on my fantasy team. I think "Longoria" should be the official name for waiting a month to delay free agency.

So him not making the opening day roster affects 1 whole year? That means he could get called up for the second game and not be FA eligible until 2015?

And I agree Ted Williams he will be the first rookie drafted, catcher is a very limited fantasy position to fill anyways.

I am not sure if the second game would do the trick. A year of service time is 172 days, so the goal is just to make sure he doesn't have 1032 before the end of the 2014 season. I think a few weeks worth of a delay would get it done.

Its not the second day Roto, its something like a month or a certain amount of at bats. Its what Tampa did last year with Longoria despite that fact that EVERYONE thought he should have started Opening Day. He is going over Doumit and Molina right now, crazy.

If the Orioles know they aren't going to compete this season, not only should they allow themselves to get an extra year prior to free agency from Wieters, but also think about when he'll become arbitration eligible. Try to keep him down long enough so that he doesn't become a "Super 2". That would require keeping him in AAA for longer than a month, but how much is that really going to hurt Baltimore?

Dodger it might not hurt the team, but the fan's are pretty anxious to see Wieter's. And thanks Ted for that info. I reached on Russell Martin last year. If your interested in joining a competitive baseball lg then come to my site and just leave a message from the contact us link. Thanks

I think Zaun is a great signing. Let him mentor Wieters, teach him how to handle a pitching staff, plus make sure he isn't a free agent for an extra year. The O's almost certainly will not compete this year, but have a bunch of young pitching talent who should start pitching mid to late 2009 or early 2010. Therefore, holding Weiters back a month is smart considering the EARLIEST the O's will compete for anything other than the AL EAST basement is 2010. O's fans are anxious to see Wieters, but holding him back a month will be worth the wait.

yahoo let me draft evan longoria last year with my final (and best) pick. he was dead weight on my bench for the first few weeks of the season but then he came up and exploded. my guess is you will be able to do that with weiters.
