« Jake Peavy Rumors: Wednesday | Main | Brewers, Dodgers Pursuing Hoffman »
10:46pm: Roch Kubatko says Zaun wants a two-year deal but the Orioles prefer one year. The O's are also talking with Ivan Rodriguez. Kubatko adds that Kenshin Kawakami was seeking a three-year deal. In another post, Kubatko says the O's have no interest in Shelley Duncan, but Richie Sexson and Ty Wigginton are possibilities for first base. Peter Schmuck adds Nick Swisher, Ryan Garko, Billy Butler, and Ryan Shealy as trade possibilities.
Dan Connolly says the Orioles offered Brian Roberts a multiyear extension at about $10MM per, but the two sides have not made progress and Roberts doesn't want talks dragging into the season. Andy MacPhail said he hasn't had trade talks for Roberts for at least a month. As for Nick Markakis, the sides were about $10MM apart on a possible six-year extension.

I highly doubt Pudge has any interest in coming here ,just to give up the full time catching duties midway. Unless the O's plan on using Wieter's more as a DH and giving him very limited catching duties. I love Wieter's bat, but haven't heard anything great about him behind the plate. Guess time will tell. Adios B-Roid.

Wieters will be solid behind the dish. BA just ran a couple articles about minor league catchers and he rated quite well.

Ok thanks man, I really haven't heard much about his Catching skills since pre-allstar break of 08. I guess no news really is good news.

Wieters has a good rep with his minor league pitchers as calling a good game. I prefer Zaun to I-Rod, but I think Zaun ends up in Boston.
I like Gomez but prefer Bloomquist. I like his speed.

What team that wants to win this year would consider Pudge as their starting catcher. His defense sucks (sure he can throw, that's it), he can't hit, his best case OBP is like .320, and he has no pop. And pitchers hate pitching to him.

Seen Weiters last year in AA, he needs to work on his foot work more, but has a hell of an arm. He was a relief pitcher at Georgia Tech for awhile.

Wigginton makes sense, as he can play first, third, and left, and could play second in a pinch (but Baltimore probably wouldn't want to play him there).

Its evident that Roberts can't wait to become a FA, though he has said all the right things in the media to remain a fan favorite here.
and WTF Richie Sexson? He should have to pay a team to play for them. He should play with the Mariners for the next 50 years for free to makeup for underperforming on that last contract. WHy has their been no mention of bringing back Millar? I know better players are available but Millar wouldn't cost us much. Unless he wants to play for a contender at the endof his career. Which seems to be the case and hasn't actually been said. Well we will have Wieters and Koji to look forward to this year. Now we need a cool nickname for him like Matsui has......

A plug for those who have not been there.
Weiters looks like the real deal BTW. As for that whole pitching thing... we'll see.

This is from Rochs blog: "Kevin Millar contacted manager Dave Trembley over the winter and said he would like to return, and would settle for a reserve role if that's all the club could promise him, but it seems like his interest is stronger than theirs at the moment." Thankfully its time to move on from Millar in my opinion, I think the team would be fine if they gave Salazar more at-bats and played Huff more at first, Huff didn't look bad playing there last season. I agree just say not to Sexson though. As far as a nickname for Koji Uehara, maybe Cujo from the Stephen King movie. I don't think he had any nickname in Japan if he did I couldn't find it.

The team that lands Zaun is going to be getting a great bargain. I wish Cito wouldn't have ran him out of town - he calls a good game and always has a good AB from both sides of the plate.

remember orioles fan,
wieters never called a game all the way to college, he has less than 150games of calling over his belt, calling against minor league hitters. i know these guys suppose to be the next johnny bench or mauer but i think it best self for him to call more games in AAA or platoon him with a veteran

this guy*
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 08, 2009 at 08:06 AM
no please not willie bloomquist
Posted by: trmahoney01 | January 08, 2009 at 08:07 AM
also i think he need to work on his defensive skills, he had a .989 fielding % and 9 errors in 93 games
i looking at his numbers, man this kid has a arm,
25 out of 55
and 12 out of 35
in A and AA

Poor Baltimore. Their best player wants to leave more than life itself...
Posted by: bottomlinesox | January 08, 2009 at 08:13 AM
Just let Huff play first. He is more than capable. It would also get Luis Montanez and possibly Nolan Reimold more AB's

He is a very big catcher his footwork will come. Oriole management should stop lolligaging and start him now. He'll go to triple AAA, hit .335 he should go majors now.
I made sure I went to see him in all 3 games. He will be better than Mauer as a hitter for sure. There is no reason if he starts this year 30 HRS. 90-100 rbi's .290 avg. This kid is THAT good.
Posted by: Cyyoung | January 08, 2009 at 09:53 AM
The reason Wieters can be better than Mauer is raw power.
Mauer is likely a better defensive catcher, but they have similar hitting tools, except that Wieters has legitimate 30+ HR power, while Mauer is more of a gap power hitter that provides 10-15 HR.
