« Jon Garland Rejects Offer From D'Backs | Main | Phillies Sign Pablo Ozuna »
According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres agreed to terms with David Eckstein on a one-year deal worth $850k. He'll play second base. Eckstein, 34 in a few days, hit .265/.343/.349 in 376 plate appearances for the Blue Jays and D'Backs in '08. He played an above-average second base in 197 innings there.
A Ken Rosenthal source suggests that the Padres might decide to pass on signing Omar Vizquel.

Now they just need to sign Vizquel and their all field no hit middle infield will be complete...

Is Aaron Boone still around? Pad's could nab him for 3rd and then really have an awful 1-2-3 hitting ss,3rd and 2B position for sure then since it looks like it's what they are aiming at, to go along with ancient also.

johns, Boone actually signed on with the Astros about a month ago.

2nd base? Sucks to be Edgar Gonzalez right about now.

i like him at short. i hope they dont plan on getting vizquel too.

Dude. This guy is seriously underrated. He had a cluTCH+ of 146 last year, to go along with a GUTss of .959 and a sKRAP of +16.

Great move, they should also go after another UF alum (Mark Kiger - see Moneyball) who I believe is is in the Minors somewhere.

jrfukudome: Nicely done sir. *golf clap*

bad move. Eckstein is a bum. with absolutely no upside. Vizquel would have brought leadership and a sure gold glove at short. have fun with another losing season. There should be a height requirement to play in the bigs, 5'6" is a joke.

don't forget his SLIME-TOAD index of 127. What is SLIME-TOAD, you ask? (S)miles, (L)aughter & (I)ntangible (M)easured as (E)ffect on (T)eam (O)ver (A)verage (D)ude

Wow is Matt Antonelli that bad?
Another sign the padres farm system is horrible *sigh*

Oh for crying out loud. Eckstein has, in every season by one of his career, posted an OBP above league average. In fact, his career .351 OBP is well above average. Who cares how tall he is. There are plenty of guys over 6' who can't post an OBP that high.
The only real problem Eckstein has is that he has been playing out of position for most of his career because of the Angels needs at the time he came up. He is an excellent defensive 2B and is a starter on more than half the teams in MLB right now.
People need to stop pissing on the guy simply because announcers often sell him using terms that have somehow become taboo among stat heads. Quite frankly, if a player scraps his way to a career OBP of better than .350, I am happy to have him.

If he gets less than 2 mil the Mets should be ashamed of themselves for not signing this guy. Cora is not a full time player and Castillo is a joke they need help desperately at second base and Eck is a grinder and would fit in any lineup.

yanks 09.
the padres are giving him no more than 1 mil. they cant afford to with damn mooores going through the divorce.

Jeez, people are bashing the pads for almost signing visquel and now are bashing us for signing eckstein. I guess we can't do anything right. Our infield now looks like: 1B A. Gonzalez 2B: Eckstein SS: L. Rodriguez/ Rule V guy/E. Gonzalez and 3B: Kouzmanoff. All I can say is that it could have been worse.

"He is an excellent defensive 2B and is a starter on more than half the teams in MLB right now."
Who? I'm not so sure about half, I'd say a few.

"Who? I'm not so sure about half, I'd say a few."
Padres, Giants, Blue Jays (close one), Rays, D'Backs, Mets, Cardinals, Royals, Mariners, Twins, Pirates, A's, White Sox (assuming Alexei moves), Indians, Nats, Brewers (assuming Weeks moves), Rockies
17 teams where he could easily be the starter.

Disagree on Giants, Toronto, Rays, Pirates, Indians, and A's. Did something happen to Mark Ellis?
Plus, how many unknown players on the last 11 teams will outperform him?
I'm not saying it's terrible.

I'm more with jrfukudome on this one. For sure, no way Eckstein would displace Iwamura on the Rays, and I thought Asdrubal Cabrera was pretty good too. Ellis is also a fine 2B.
He IS the Padres 2B, so I don't think that really counts :-)
Assuming people move is also a little presumptuous. Heck, if Cano moved to LF, Eckstein could start at 2B for the Yankees. Just shift Pedroia over to SS and Eck would be great in Boston. See how this works?
I am with AA on a number of those, however. He's clearly good enough to play 2B in Arizona, NYM, KC, Seattle, Washington, and Colorado. Aaron Hill is pretty good, so I don't know about Toronto.

HAHA....BBGiants25....still bitter?
Posted by: TonyD8 | January 17, 2009 at 03:05 PM
Eckstein is a scrappy SS and an even better second baseman. I'm surprised the mets weren't on him.

eckstein's biggest hit last year was his collision with aaron hill on may 29th during a 12-0 blowout
