« Yankees Sign Angel Berroa | Main | Odds and Ends: Aurilia, Sweeney, Nady »
Padres GM Kevin Towers in an interview today said he expects to sign a shortstop by next week, according to Corey Brook at MLB.com.
"Towers said he had interest in veterans David Eckstein and Omar Vizquel, in addition to a few names he didn't want to divulge. 'There are a couple of other guys, too,' Towers said. 'We've got three or four options.'"

Can't think of two better slugging short stops in baseball.

LOL at catch212.
On a serious note, it was about time they made an acquisition. I'd prefer Eckstein over Vizquel but both options are below average. Vizquel still plays good defense though but he can't hit jack.
I wonder who the other two options are..

Vizquel cant hit anything but if he started the whole year i guarantee he will win a Gold Glove or at least be in the conversation

Players who don't hit well don't win Gold Gloves in this day and age.
See: Gomez, Carlos and Ellis, Mark.
Both were the best defenders at their positions in the AL last year. The fact that Ellis has never won a GG speaks volumes about the veritability of the award.

How many bellow average middle IF are the Padres planning on carrying this year?
Antonelli - Rookie (had down eyar in AAA last year)
Denker - Rookie (picked up on waivers)
Cabrera - Played in A ball last year and has to stay on the 25 man roster or they loose him
Rodriguez - Had an ok year last year but not an every day player
Edgar Gonzalez - All bat an no glove.

I bet one of the other guys Towers is looking at is Cedeno. Maybe the Cubs would give him up in some sort of blockbuster trade.

Vizquel will always be in the conversation simply on reputation. As for the hitting thing, that Utley didn't win it speaks against that. He was both the best offensive and defensive 2B and missed out on the award.
