According to the Associated Press, the San Diego Padres have avoided arbitration with Scott Hairston, signing him for $1.25MM for '09.
Hairston, 28, hit .248/.312/.479 last season with 17 home runs and 31 RBI in 326-at bats. He'll provide depth in San Diego's outfield this season.

Pretty sure he was just arb eligible.

I'm guessing he's gonna be a backup?
A backup at 1.25 mil is pretty high for a team that wouldn't even spend 4 mil on their lifetime closer.

Not a by the definition back-up. It looks like he'll form a platoon with Jody Gerut in CF, and see a good amount of time in LF too to spell Chase Headley. For a team with little chance of competing, spending more than a million or two on a closer is a luxury they didn't have, no matter how much the player meant to the city. Not to mention they had Heath Bell ready to close games. 2009'll be his time to sink or swim. Showing he can be a closer is literally the difference between millions of dollars come free agent time for Heath.

I don't know... it's the NL West, I think every team has a chance there. Unless, of course, the Dodgers resign Manny.
It's a shame the Padres are in this financial mess since I like their core players in Peavy, Young, Headley, Bell, Giles and Gonzalez.

Yeah he'll be a backup but a backup that will most likely platoon with all 3 guys in the OF like the poster above said. Pretty cheap for a guy who hit almost 20 HR's, good signing by the Pads as expected.

As a longtime SD fan, I'm not saying Hairston has no place on a MLB roster, but I can honestly say that if the guy was going to break out, he would have already. He's had the opportunity in the past. I don't think I'll face too much opposition with that claim.
His 20 HR's don't mean much, as none of them ever seem to influence the game. He'll hit one when we're 6 down or 6 up. So, if we accept that this guy is going to have little impact on the season, why even sign him? His overall impact (maybe not his stats, but his influence on a game) can easily be replaced by a cheaper guy. Better yet, give a guy like Venable a shot.
I don't know. In the grand scheme of things, I just have a hard time accepting that we're not bringing back Trevor when his salary is basically equal to Hairston's and a couple other guys.
And this isn't to say that I don't believe in Heath Bell. The guy will get his turn. But it just seems that after everything Trevor has done, he at least would be given the opportunity to finish his career in SD.
