« Red Sox Owner John Henry To Meet With Varitek | Main | Angels Avoid Arbitration With Darren Oliver »
Ken Rosenthal suggested yesterday that the David Eckstein signing might mean the Padres will pass on Omar Vizquel. Jenny Cavnar of Channel 4 San Diego spoke to Padres GM Kevin Towers, who told her the Padres will go in-house at shortstop, probably with Luis Rodriguez or Chris Burke.

Forget Visquel
They should sign Orlando Hudson to a one or two year contract in order to have an above average 2nd baseman this year

WE CUB FANS ARE TAKING OVER THIS THREAD TO BE A NEW 'JAKE PEAVY RUMORS' THREAD! ATTACK!
;) just joking. Wish Omar would have signed there, I know he had horrible numbers last year, but he's still a personal favorite.
Who is the SS right now anyway? Some hybrid of Edgar Gonzalez/Eckstein/Rodriguez/?

Still think Vizquel will be in Texas to mentor Andrus, or open the season there while Andrus plays in AAA till he is ready.

ARyan - Do you have any idea how much Orlando Hudson is asking for ? He is a type A free agent (which would cost the Pads draft picks) and millions when they are shedding payroll.
Why would the team (who has no chance of winning anything) want "an above average" second baseman?
Not a chance, and not a great idea...

For SS i think it will be either Luis Rodriguez/Sean Kazmar but Burke is a possibility too.

JAI- Hudson couldn't be too much more on a one year deal than what they paid to Tadahito Iguchi in 2008
And besides, the draft this year isn't too deep after the Nationals and Mariners pick. In addition, Hudson could have a great year this season and leave while the Padres get compensated, too.

But you are right, in a way. If they can't get hudson on a one or two year deal, then it is not worth it.

Hudson will cost 4-5 million at the very very least as well as the draft picks...and if he is not a type A next year, such a huge loss....no point in it for the Pads.

Ned Colletti must be salivating, and Juan Castro looking over his shoulder.

Good luck on Chris Burke playing SS for the Pads, sure he played SS in college, but rarely if ever did he play SS for the Stros, oh yeah plus he's only good for a pop up at the plate.

I doubt Burke's going to play SS with us, I just do.
More likely then not it'll be Luis Rodriguez who plays ok defense. The Pads also have this SS from the Rule V draft, Cabrera, that they want to put out there.
Glad we didn't get Vizquel, I'm happy we got Eckstein

Vizquel hanging on passed his prime. Even the lowly padres arent interested. Hang 'em up.

I feel bad for Omar as defensively he is a still the Jedi master. I really hope some team will sign him if only for a defensive replacement. He is still better than a lot of the younger SS but he is old. He is also good in the club house. I wish SF would keep him or just some team for a good veteran presence...he is one of the good guys in MLB
