« Nationals Discouraged On Dunn, Hudson, Wolf | Main | Red Sox Agree To Terms With Baldelli, Smoltz »
Astros GM Ed Wade admitted Thursday that an Andy Pettitte return to Houston is highly unlikely. Alyson Footer filed the report for MLB.com.
"We haven't had any discussion with Andy or his representatives and we don't see a scenario where he would fit into our payroll scenario at this time," Wade said. Most experts in the baseball industry believe Pettitte will eventually return to the Yankees. But he may now have to settle for less than the one-year, $10MM offer that the Yanks extended to him previously this offseason.

They're not gonna humiliate him and lessen the offer.

Pettitte to the Dodgers makes a lot of sense. Torre, they need an arm, etc...

He's going to retire.

Reunite with joe, Andy!

The Yankees are done with Pettitte at this point. No way he was getting a better offer than that. Especially this year! Its been a nice ride, but time to trade in and buy new!
Posted by: snowjev | January 08, 2009 at 06:12 PM
Why not? He's humiliating himself by not taking one year, $10 million. Even though $12 million would be a reasonable price for him, he deserves the pay cut for his lack of loyalty, especially after he said he wants to pitch in the new stadium and play for "the Yankees or no one".

Holy Mackeral, just sign with the Yankees, and stop being a chucklehead.
Posted by: Cyyoung | January 08, 2009 at 06:14 PM
Yanks capt - name some pitchers that were as poor as Pettite last year that make 12 million + Pettite is worth 6 mill straight up
Posted by: AstrosCoverage.blogspot.com | January 08, 2009 at 06:18 PM
Yankees are dealing with Petite
Sox are dealing with Varitek. Some of these guys are really something.
One thing different Petite can still contribute.
I am not so sure about Varitek anymore.

No doubt, Pettitte can contribute, but he is looking to get paid as the Andy Pettitte of 1999, not the Andy Pettitte of 2009.
I was, and still am, a HUGE Andy Pettitte fan, however its time to stop crying, look in the mirror and realize what he is at this point in his career. The whining is getting old and is going to take a whole lot away from his Yankee legacy.

Footer has a point about Astros not wanting Pettitte due to budget and that the linking is most likely due to wanting to add leverage, but, Drayton McLane might go for it if he can market it as a probable return to the WS.
Crazy as it sounds, Houstonians would probably flock to MMP if they think the rotation is upgraded. (which it would with Pettitte in it)

this is becoming as drama filled as trying to figure out what Favre is going to do year after year.
Listen Andy, the Yankees paid you plenty over the years. And paid you well above what you were worth in 2007 and 2008. And especially in 2008 when you had a player option for 16 mil and the Yankees let you take your time and decide if you wanted to come back guaranteeing if you declined the option they would pay you the same. Not to mention you decided to take the 16 mil from the Yanks why failing to tell them you were in the Mitchell report. The Yankees are again doing you a favor by giving you a 10 mil offer this year, in case you haven't noticed, nobody is beating down the door to sign you, nobody is even willing to consider you.
Honestly Pettitte is already a legend in Yankee history. Much like Favre is in Packer history. But last year we were patient with you because of what you have done for the franchise. And now the drama is even worse this year. All you are doing is hurting you legacy right now. You were a warrior for us in the late 90's but now all I am starting to think about when someone says your name is a cry baby who needs to be coddled and told we love you while giving you a ton of money for what you did (and were already paid for) in the past. Either retire or accept the offer. Enough is enough. Don't make this a bad split like Favre with the Packers.

The guy claims to be a devout Christian yet finds his name on the Mitchell report and is trying to squeeze every penny off of a bad year.
I bet he thinks he can get what Clemens got in 07.
I think it's a better idea to see how guys like Hughes and Kennedy will do during a full season. If they underperform, then the Yanks can go after FA 2010 pitchers. If they improve, then they can stick with them.

im sick of players like Pettitte claiming really wanting to pitch somewhere or others saying they want to play in there home state or winning was the main reason or whatever other bs they come up with to not seem like money hungry athletes you were offered 10mil thats 100k a year for 100 years, 300k+ per start i know its tough but REALLY you were horrible down the stretch and you are another year older and you always were overpaid if you ask me 16mil the last two years come on u had 14 losses era 4.5 eventually when you bite the hand that feeds you,you end up starving, the red socks just got Penny,Smoltz, and Rocco for about 10 mil not counting incentives i know its risky but Pettite isnt going to dominate any more than Penny OR Smoltz and definetly not combined
Posted by: yanksin4 | January 08, 2009 at 07:09 PM
The Mets should get in on this, even if only to encourage Lowe or Perez to sign. Pettite can still pitch; he was victim of a .338 BABIP last year. And it's not like he had a sky-high LD% either-- it was a respectable 19.9%. His xFIP was 3.79, good for 7th in the American League. It appears he was really victimized by the Yankees' shoddy infield defense; they had the immobile Jason Giambi at first, the always-overrated Derek Jeter at SS and the middling Robinson Cano at 2B. It's an infield made up of guys who are there because of their bats, and it hurt the groundballing Pettite.
He's not THAT old-- he'll only be 37-- and of course he throws the baseball with his left arm. He only allowed 19 HR despite pitching 200 IP in the AL East. Pettite is looking like possibly one of the better bargains in this years FA market.
Posted by: JK47 | January 08, 2009 at 07:11 PM
bargains he wants at least 12 million ace like money to most teams that arent the yankees and if he is your ace why waste your time
Posted by: yanksin4 | January 08, 2009 at 07:20 PM
He's definately a good deal at 12 mil per for a NL team. Heck, he can get a multi-year deal from an NL team. I think he's better bet for the Mets at 12-13 mil per for 2 years than Lowe at 14-16 per for 3-4 years.
The Yankees don't need Pettitte, especially after the Mitchell report.
They should probably still get another starter so I like a gamble like Sheets for 12 mil per for 2 years. Maybe even a one year 13-15 mil deal.

I love how Yankee fans expect a guy to take a paycut from a team that's throwing around hundreds of millions of dollars this offseason. If the Yankees wanted Andy Pettitte back badly enough, they'd do what it takes to sign him (and it's obvious they have the resources to do it). It's clear they don't want him back so they're making this information public so it reflects Pettitte negatively instead of them.
Posted by: TNS | January 08, 2009 at 09:07 PM
please tell me another team other than the mets giving pettite 12-13mil per, i bet you cant think of one so that means its no bargain if your the only one buying why spend more than you should the mets arent that stupid if he was spanish maybe omar might overpay but hes not so they wont, yankees offer 10mil mets wont even offer that, that was pettitte's best offer he might save face when the yankees offer 10mil with an option for next year and he accepts with some small buyout so both sides look like they got what they wanted when he leaves next year and we do this all over again
Posted by: yanksin4 | January 08, 2009 at 09:08 PM
I highly doubt any team signs him for more than $10 million. He's still productive and I'd love to have him back on the Yankees (even after he rejected the offer), but the fact remains... if he doesn't want to take a paycut, then I guess he's going to have to retire. I don't think I see a team even touching $12 million, the way the economy is. Maybe it would look better for him after Lowe, Garland, Perez, Sheets, and all the other ones are signed, but I still don't think he gets close to his last years pay.
Posted by: Agent | January 08, 2009 at 09:14 PM
so no one should ever get a pay cut TNS not even a b level starter who was already overpaid and claims he just wants to win and play for the yankees blah blah im sick of other teams fans claiming the yankees should pay everybody triple just cuz. when the red sox let players like Clemens,Boggs,Damon,Lowe,Pedro,Orlando Cabrera,Manny,Varitek go over money really but they spun it like they were bad for all these reasons then they actually signed Arroyo to a "home town discount"and then traded him for Willy Mo if Ted williams wanted more money he would have retired a yankee. the yankees pay people that have earned a check and instead of going after Lowe and Oliver Perez or Ben Sheets they had heart enough to throw Pettitte a bone and this is how he repays them
Posted by: yanksin4 | January 08, 2009 at 09:17 PM
Here's another ungrateful multi millionaire Yankee.
14-14 last year along with a monster ERA and a HGH scandal, and 10 million dollars is apparently an insult to your 83 mph stuff. Take the train pal, Carl Pavano is saving your seat.
