Not a bad signing at all.

i have a feeling he is going to be used as trade bait.

Seems like a steal to me.

hes not going to be used as trade bait unless peavy is coming this way. victorino means alot to this team

"i have a feeling he is going to be used as trade bait."
and start who, Golson? Force another lefty into the lineup? (Jenkins) If anyone is bait it is definitely Jenkins and because of the Ibanez signing and the emergence of Werth. Stairs will likely be given away as well. We're too lefty-heavy to trade away one of our two switch hitters.

Geoff Jenkins has negative trade value.
If anyone is trade bait, its Victorino or Werth, although there really isn't anything of an immediate hole to fill.
Victorino will stay. I don't think trade ideas start until after the 2009 season.

Paul...Greg Golson plays for the Rangers now we traded him for John Mayberry...

and I agree Jenkins would be the most logical OF to get traded, but who would pick up his contract?

Not a bad raise for Victorino. He made 480K last year.

dont forget they almost traded victorino last year for matt holliday. i dont know who they would trade victorino for but he is replaceable. not to mention there are still some nice decent OF FA's.

"i dont know who they would trade victorino for but he is replaceable. not to mention there are still some nice decent OF FA's."
None of the available good OF FA are center fielders though.
And putting Werth in CF is a horrible, horrible idea.

They did it last year a couple games and it didn't hurt them. They dont need another Lefty but Jim Edmonds played quite a bit of CF in his day and the same with Kenny Lofton. They would be cheap to sign I am sure.

"And putting Werth in CF is a horrible, horrible idea."
Do you have anything to back this up, or are you just eyeballing it? FRAA and UZR both liked Werth over Victorino in CF, although Werth's sample size isn't huge.
Werth's bat would play much better in CF - he's league-average offensively as a RF. And as you noted, good CFs don't grow on trees. That's why Victorino would make excellent trade bait.

Victorino isn't replaceable because they've got no one to put in center. Werth is more suited for right and there's no one even close in the system. He's most likely not going anywhere.
And the Holliday trade was a totally different story. Even still, he didn't make any sense to be included from the Phillies perspective.

ColonelTom, I am talking "in my own opinion" so I don't really need anything to back it up.

Victorino is going nowhere. He's at worst, the 4th best CF in the National League
They have nothing at CF in the system close to ML ready. I expect Vic to be locked up if he has a strong first half

I'm not sure what that was about, Aaron, since (1) I was responding to someone else's post, not yours, and (2) I agree with you on pretty much everything you posted here. I think Lofton's probably done, though.

Phils are really doing a great job of getting all these arbitration players taken care of early. Sign that they are trying to get a gauge on their payroll to make another signing?
Also Stairs is by far the most likely to be traded. He makes 1MM and can really only be used as a PH/DH. Im sure they can find an American League team would be happy to have him as lefty bat/DH off the bench.

"Victorino is going nowhere. He's at worst, the 4th best CF in the National League"
I was kind of doubting that when I first read it, but I think you are actually right. In fact, I think he qualifies as third best at this point because of McLouth's defensive deficiencies that really make him a corner OFer playing out of position.
