Does this mean that the A's can trade for Donald now?? With the Giambi signing and Chavez reportedly healthy, SS is the only infield weakness.
Giles will protect Utley if he gets injured leaving Donald as trade bait.

who would the a's give up for donald?

"who would the a's give up for donald?"
What would the Phillies want.
I think Sean Doolittle could be interesting, as someone who could step in for Werth in 2010 (although that makes the club even MORE lefty-heavy) and move to 1B if Howard leaves via FA. He could be Werth's platoon partner in 2010.
Or maybe one of Vince Mazarro or James Simmons (I prefer dealing Mazarro).

Mazzaro and/or Simmons +??

Throw in Murton too. Do the Phillies need a 4th outfielder?

This is a smart signing by the Phillies Giles WILL provide a good bat off the bench and while Utley is out he WILL be productive enough to assist in victories.

donald is kind of getting overrated by fans. he was a 3 star prospect by BP, ranked 5th in an ok philly farm system by BA.
he's 24 and hasnt played above AA. i think one of mazzaro/simoons seems ok, but i would be hesitant to trade either. maybe casilla/braden combo

I like this signing. I think if Giles can get back to his Braves form, he'll be a legit backup for Utley..capable of hitting around .275 or .280 and playing solid defense.
That is, if he's willing to be content with his role as a backup.

I don't see this at all as any sort of indication of Donald getting traded. If this move came in the middle of ST, sure, I'd say it does, but I think it's just precautionary.
He's the kind of player who doesn't get the love from the outlets like BP and BA but he's also the kind of player who succeeds anyway. There's no reason to trade him just yet.

"he's 24 and hasnt played above AA."
Gee, I wonder why that is. It couldn't be that the Phillies don't need replacements at SS and 2B.

And, in the event of this being a precautionary move, it would be the first one executed by Amaro I'd endorse. Kudos.
But, in light of that, I don't trust Amaro any further than I can throw him (even though I shouldn't be throwing anyone with my bad knee!, so here's to hoping.

I don't trade more than one. Obviously.
Only one of Mazarro/Simmons/Doolittle. Preferrably Mazarro for obvious reasons.

JohnKruksWaistLine- I love your username.
This move is definitely precautionary, regardless of whether Donald is traded. Build depth, in case issues happen. Which they will.
Oh. He also bats RH. Pinch hitter after Utley gets back?

I saw your comment about my username in the Burrell signing, melonis, but because so many other stories have popped up, I hadn't gone back and found it for sure. So, now that we're early on in a thread, and you're more likely to see this, thanks. Glad to see someone else is amused like I was when I thought of it.
And I just felt the need to state this is precautionary because the first couple posts made it seem like it was going to be open season on Donald, and I didn't want the thread to turn into that.

HEIGHT* LOL

I'd want to let Donald develop. Let him play at AAA this year and if he does well i can see him as a Daniel Murphy type player. There's no need there we'd be filling so why would Ruben do that? Oh crap, because he's Ruben, that's why.
I miss Pat!!!

This is a great signing. Everyone cool your jets about dealing Donald... This signing has nothing to do with him
Kudos to Ruben for a decent pick up.
