« Varitek, Red Sox Working On Deal? | Main | Active Week Ahead? »
MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan spoke to Rangers GM Jon Daniels, who said:
"We've looked at some right handed options for the lineup but we're not pursuing Manny [Ramirez] at this time."
Chatter was sparked earlier today by a recent Jon Heyman appearance on the MLB Network where he said the Rangers have interest in Manny. But there's nothing on Heyman's blog on the topic currently. Tim Brown, sizing up the market for Ramirez, talked to a Rangers source who said they're "unlikely" to sign him.

one less team for SF and LA to battle with haha

Somehow I think the feeling is mutual
(like the Rangers could afford his monster contract)

Manny will end up with Dodgers
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 04, 2009 at 10:56 PM
im saying giants right now, mccourt is cheap
Posted by: Joba | January 04, 2009 at 10:59 PM
It will be a late January signing and dont count out the Angels.

Bravesfan10 - You just beat me to it by a matter of seconds! I still think there's a very good chance that the Angels swoop in and snatch Manny. Maybe just the vague hint that one of their division rivals just might have the slightest bit of interest could be enough to push Moreno and Reagins into finally making a deal.
Posted by: BigChris77 | January 04, 2009 at 11:07 PM
In regards to the Angels, I know Reagins said "we're going to let the kids play". Ok, that's fine and dandy, but which kids, exactly, will Manny be blocking if he's signed to the Halos? Are they calling Gary Matthews Jr. a kid?
Seriously, they have tons of talented "kids" in the infield (Aybar, Wood, Morales, Kendrick, S. Rodriguez), and pitchers (Adenhart, Green, Jepsen, Ortega). But aside from maybe Terry Evans, who's been injury prone and the Angels haven't seemed to show a lot of faith in, I don't see any four or five tool outfielders coming up that are major league ready.
So, I think Manny fits. Sign him to a 3 year deal with a vesting option for a fourth year, put him in left, and you can have him, Guerrero, and Juan Rivera all rotating through the DH spot to keep them fresh. Works out great.

As far as the Angels signing Manny, I'm all for it. He is that power bat we need in the lineup. Offer him a 3 year / 78 million dollar deal with a option on the 4th year.
The list of free agents for 2010 is looking pretty weak so why not sign him.
Posted by: dpncharge | January 04, 2009 at 11:24 PM
im all for it as well. a lineup featuring
Figgins
Kendrick
Vlad
Manny
Hunter
Rivera
Morales
Napoli
Aybar/Itzuris

any contending team would be foolish not to consider Manny. The guy is a freak of nature, he can still play the OF (in a hitters park) but as a DH the guy can change the out come of a game every time he is up.
Also IMO i bet he goes to the Giants. IMHO the Giants will be a contending team this year

Heyman's been a farse this entire off-season, you're better than that Tim. Stay away from him.

The top three free agents in left next year are Matt Holliday,Jason Bay,and Carl Crawford. I almost can guarantee that Holliday is traded by/at the deadline and Boston may sign Bay long term OR give him up for someone and build on Acquiring Holliday at deadline or pay him mega dollars.
my predictiion
Ramirez= Dodgers. I think that GM Coletti swoops in and Steals him from GM Reagins. But don't b surprised if the Angels make a run at Holliday
Bay= Long term with Boston
Holliday= Like i said,he more than likely will go to a contender at the deadline maybe the Angels.Who knows? Or if they hang onto him,he could find a big deal at the 2010 off-season. Three teams who maybe interested are my Braves,Angels, and the Cardinals

I saw this article and imagined Manny's numbers in Arlington...
....and then I jizzed in my pants!

Im guessing Dodgers or Giants for Manny. Angels have too many high priced outfielders, Torri Hunter, Gary Matthews Jr, Vladimir Guerrero, Garret Anderson, and also got a couple more OF signed. If the Angels wouldnt pay the extra couple mill a year to keep K-Rod compared to Fuentes why would they dish 25 mill for Manny.

Jon Heyman is hands down the worst supposed "journalist" covering baseball in the world today.
That Manny/Rangers rumor sounded made up on the spot, what a hack.
Posted by: PL | January 05, 2009 at 12:12 AM
This Manny to the RANGERS ,I'll bet came from Borus , people just to try and get the Angels involved ,to drive the price up . Manny can't pitch we don't need him .

Mannys going to Japan!!
I'm calling it!!
lol

Garrett is history with the Angels. I can see a CA team signing him, Dodgers & Giants make the most sense although Manny could be an Angel in the Outfield :)
Or a DH as well
I also would not count the Yanks out on this as well.

I just watch MLB Network to hear Mitch Williams...lol...not Jon Heyman
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 05, 2009 at 12:30 AM
Harold Reynolds needs to go as well...
He talked about Andre Dawson signing for $500,000 as if it were today's money instead of way back when...

If the Angels sign Manny they will have 2 freaks of nature hitting back-to-back LOL.
But wait a minute. There is one big problem that still exists.
The starting lineup would be all right-handed 2 through 6. That's not good. Perhaps Gary Matthews can find a way in there to platoon with Juan Rivera.
But Rivera can hit 30 HR if fully healthy. Napoli can do the same if he continues to mature and can play at least 130 games behind the plate.
Wait a minute, there's 2 new big bats right there, pending possible health and age issues.
Basically the Angels would have power #3 through #8 in their lineup. Similar to the final months of 2008 after they got Rivera back, and then acquired Texeira.
Sorry, power isn't the problem. Its age and health.
These kids need to grow, and when they do, the Angels won't need to go out and get power for a few years.

The Angels have lots of power.
The problem is that they are either too young or too old lol.

"Jon Heyman is hands down the worst supposed "journalist" covering baseball in the world today."
I think its a toss up between Heyman and Rosenthal. It would not surprise me to find out they sit around drinking beers together trying to see who can come up the most ridiculous rumor.
