Red Sox Agree To Terms With Baldelli, Smoltz

7:00pm: Smoltz signed the offer sheet from the Red Sox, says Buster Olney.  Olney's story has contract details as well.   There's also an interesting quote from Theo Epstein:

"I think you'll see us now turn to players who we can take chances on, players who represent potential impact players.  We still have some things going on."

2:31pm: Gordon Edes provides details on the Braves' offer to Smoltz:

The Braves would have paid Smoltz incrementally based on his health up to a maximum of $5 million if he remained on the major league roster for 60 days, and the guarantee was for no more than $3 million. The offer also included another $5 million in performance bonuses and $2 million in additional incentives. So Smoltz could have earned up to $12 million by staying healthy and pitching extremely well.

1:55pm: David O'Brien says the Braves would not exceed $3MM guaranteed for Smoltz.  Braves CEO Terry McGuirk is "shocked and surprised" by his decision.  Buster Olney says Smoltz is set to sign Boston's offer sheet and was perturbed by McGuirk's comments.  In a statement, Smoltz said there were "large discrepancies" between the offers.

11:39am: Chad Finn of the Boston Globe sums up the reports: the Red Sox announced an agreement with Rocco Baldelli on a one-year deal and the AP says their one-year deal with John Smoltz will be finalized today.  Both players are pretty much luxuries for the Sox, but they had money to burn.  I never would've predicted Smoltz and Trevor Hoffman would be wearing new uniforms in 2009.

Baldelli's deal has a $500K base with $1.75MM in roster bonuses and $5.25MM in performance bonuses.  The Phillies, Reds, Pirates, and Orioles were in on him.  Smoltz gets $5MM guaranteed with another possible $5MM in bonuses.

WEEI's Alex Speier looks at Boston's successful history of buying low, and the station also notes that Brad Penny's physical is scheduled for today.

Royals Get:

Homer Bailey SP
Ian Kennedy SP
Nick Swisher 1B

LOL, I don't know what's funnier: the Yankees getting Stubbs and Bailey for Xavier fuckin' Nady, or that package for Greinke and DeJesus. You could also ask for the Royals soul while you're at it.

To: yaz.doyle

You are claming that these are stupid trade ideas? Do you realize your GM (Theo)offerd Clay and Jacoby for Handley. Thats why the trade talk lasted all of 20 seconds.

and Buchholz is spelled with 2 "h"s

not trying to be sarcastic but could you honestly explain what it was you were trying to say there?

"The fact you consider what you do as garbage and your tone."

this SENTENCE is garbage...

im not in the market of being a homer, i love the sox, but understand with the acquisitions of both cc and tex you have put yourself in posiition of having the two most important things in baseball for the next 5 to 6 years, a lights out number one and a legitimate 3 or four hitter for any team in the mlb. that being said the yankee fans "trades" that get thrown around here are more than ridiculous. this being the grossest ive seen in a long time...you are awarded no points and may god have mercy on your soul

I think what was most obviously missing from the trade to the Royals for a possible #2 guy type in Grienke, is the lack of the Royals getting anyone back that fits that mold in return. While Swisher would obviously help an anemic Royals offensive and be a worthwile trade target for them, Bailey and Kennedy have shown none of the potential that they supposedly have on the ML level and find it hard to see a team trade off the 2nd best pitcher that they have by far, for 1 bat (Swisher) and those 2 tossup's in Bailey and Kennedy. Cabrerra does not help the Royals at all, (being a worse corner OF thought than DeJesus even)and it just boils down from there to a greinke for Swisher trade.. Foolish in my thinking for a Royals team needing starters and relievers, not prospects that have done nothing but struggle.

it was actually, would you be interested in a trade that had the basework of buchholz and ellsbury for hanley...he assumed other pieces would have been thrown in...not to mention he was speaking to club who are in dire needs of cutting payroll year after year. and hanley making the 1 mil(i think) this and next year isnt the problem its the 13 hell make in the end (guessing)

every good GM throws out these ideas feeling out possible options, some seem far fetched others seem more legitimate and get done.

i know its not the unbelievable job that cashman does of throwing around someone elses money for an offseason but at least hes trying, right?

how about masterson or buchholz for kelly shoppach from indians

as far as this article goes, the Orioles were never interested in Baldelli. I wish they were... He WOULD be my pick for comback player of the year.... but he'll be a 4th outfielder in Boston....

wierd to see crisp, shoppach and bard all make moves in and out of the red sox again....they were all part of that deal that brought crisp and sent shoppach to the sox in the first place.

Hate to give up young arms just yet.

I am hoping for a band aid in the catchers postion for 2 yrs, by July trading deadline, we should have a good idea what these kids are doing.

wouldnt you rather have a proven catcher like shoppach as opposed to a prospect thats not proven anything like salty or teagarden. and why do you yankee trolls have to screw with every post in here its not all about you. get over yourselves

Call me crazy, but when a young arm is invovled, I have a Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi phobia.

*Claps* for Cyyoung

I didnt even think about the Smoltz-Salty connection. I would imagine that within the next few days Theo and co. will be meeting with Smoltz to discuss their catcher situation.

Great foresight.

IF the Redsox really want to beat the Yanks then they should make a trade w/the Mets.Ellsbury,Bay and Buchholz 4 Beltran and either Church or N.Evans to be their 4th OF.Then the Mets could trade Parnell and Scheinder to Clev. 4 Shoppach.

"how about masterson or buchholz for kelly shoppach from indians"

I would do Bowden, I think a full year of Shoppach(sp) gets chewed up and spit out rather quickly..

Im loving these Boston signings! Now with Penny (terrible last year and hurt), Wakefield (is this guy like 50 by now? Oh nevermind that just the speed of his pitchs now), and Smoltz (In the prime of his career! What? What's that?...He was hurt last year!?!? At his YOUNG AGE!?!?) Add those 3 up and throw in Dice-K (who is as dominating as ever...wait, his HR rate went up how much last season? In a stadium like Bostons??? I cant see him giving up any more HR's then last year...oh.. this just reported..The Yankees signed TEX and SwisH! Im sure Dice-K having to pitch against Tex that many more times a season wont affect his already steller increasing HR rate! I almost forgot about Josh Beckett (GREAT TRADE BOSTON!!! You got Mike Lowell-hurt,hurt,hurt, and Beckett for Hanley Ramirez! Great for them that Beckett and Lowell have worked out as well as they have with those Championships because those days are over! Yankee 4-life.... Go figure huh?

Regarding the last bench spot, Jeff Bailey can hit but he's not left handed. You can't have a bench without a single lefty. So, I'm guessing the Sox go with either Chris Carter or a cheap free agent.

Holy smokes Snowjev. Have you ever even looked at Dice K's stats? Apparently not, he let up 12 homeruns last year. 12!!
That puts him near the league leaders in HR/Allowed. He gave 25 in his rookie year. Now, I might be stupid...but last time I checked..12 was less than 25. I may be mistaken though. Another thing, how can you rag on the Sox signing Penny and Smoltz to 1 yr $5m contracts, when the Yankees went out and signed AJ Burnett to a 5 year $55 deal. Burnett has been injured way more than Penny and has never even came close to performing as well as either Smoltz or Penny. So, check your facts before you type something

If the Red Sox make the playoffs and Smoltz is healthy then they'll be near impossible to beat.

Still one of the best, if not the best, big game pitcher in the leagues. He beat Johan Santana with a blown out shoulder last year.

snowjev,
to any knowledgeable baseball fan...these are good signings.. 2 questions for "how many games did sox finish ahead of yanks and how many games did bartolo colon win last year for sox?" if you can ans these questions you now know why these are good signings.. they may not be big splashes, but big splashes (rj damon, a rod, etc) dont always mean WS titles....
on a cool nigh in sept 09 when cc gives up 6 + in 4 innings and smoltzy comes in a strikes out tex with runners on in the 8th, sox win and clinch div and i am going to repost your comments and have a good laugh..
for the record, i know alot of intell yanks fans as i live in ny and they would be the first to tell you that was an ignorant post...

smoltz is going to be nasty this year. all reports say hes throwing in the 90s and working all of 5 of his pitches real well. hes a big competitor and loves pitching in big games. i see him mowing down yankees in big games in sept.

Sabathia and Teixeira have never won in October.

Teixeira twice was traded for at the deadline in order to push a team to the World Series, and both times his team didn't make it past the first round.

The Red Sox are the best at building teams with character. Theo should add Kotsay and Eckstein and we will see them in the 2009 World Series! Let the Yankee's spend ridiculous amounts of money on self centered prima donnas.

"Teixeira twice was traded for at the deadline in order to push a team to the World Series, and both times his team didn't make it past the first round."

Yeah, so? Teixeira hit .467 in the playoffs last season (7 for 15... and also had 4 BB). It's a TEAM effort getting by in the playoffs. I think it's safe to say that losing in the playoffs wasn't his fault.

Smoltz has pitched in the NL for the last 20 years, the AL is going to be a little harder for the 41 year oldman. He's not going to be able to pitch to the other team's pitcher. He's going to have to face a DH now. He should have stayed with the Braves. Yanks will beat him up!

There's also an interesting quote from Theo Epstein:

Hmm...I wonder what else Theo has up his sleeve?

I don't want Eckstein. We already have 2 SS, and our 2B plays almost every game. Eck has also never played 3B and Lowrie or Youk play there when Lowell needs a rest. No place to put him.

steveo Smoltz is one of those pitchers where it doesn't matter what league he is in. The guy just flat out knows how to pitch and has been in every situation under the sun a pitcher can be in. This was a GREAT signing by the Sox and could quite possibly be one of the best moves they have made since getting Beckett. I was hoping the Yanks would take a chance on him to setup Mo or Maybe pitch in the rotation if Hughes stumbles again. If not for what he is capable just his presence. Trust me, the young pitchers in Boston (Lestor, Masterson, Buccholz) can learn a ton from this guy if they are willing to watch and listen. I was praying he wouldn't leave the Braves.

Smoltz is a good pitcher but NO we didn't need him on the Yankees yanks09. We want to get younger, stay away from the older players. Only one I would have wanted back would have been Mussina. Smoltz, if Boston is smart, will be in the ben for the soxs.

"will be in the pen for the soxs" haha

I hate to see Smoltzie go. Boston is going to love this guy. He is a class act and the I don't blame him for going to a team that has a chance to put another ring on his finger, just wish he could of did it for the Bravos. You will be missed and will get a standing ovation from the "real" baseball fans in Atlanta if we ever get the pleasure to see you pitch against us.

It's been a sad year for the Bravos. First, long time announcer Skip Caray leaves us and now Smoltz.

Always a pleasure sifting through the usual AL East mud slinging.

As an outsider, one thing seems evident---the idea of Manny in NY absolutely TERRIFIES everyone not in pinstripes---especially the Sox. But if that signing doesn't happen, the fate of the division will rest with the DL gods.

little off topic....but wakefield in the rotation scares the crap out of me.

I'd say that's a pretty accurate summary.

To yankee77: It's true. Despite the embarassment of riches that the Yankees have displayed this offseason in signing Teixeira, Sabbathia and Burnett they are still not as good or as deep as the Red Sox. The offenses are pretty even the defense in boston is much better, the rotations are, again, pretty even and the Sox bullpen is much better. Bench also goes to the Sox. Now, injuries can change all that in either direction very quickly, but as of now(with the additions of Baldelli, Penny, Kotsay, Smoltz and Saito as well as a healthy Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell and David Ortiz) the Sox have the deeper and more talented roster.
