« Evaluating Michael Young Suitors | Main | Wren Considering Trade For Pitcher »
According to Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox plan to discuss a contract extension with outfielder Jason Bay before the season begins but after the remaining big-name free agent outfielders sign. The depressed free agent market could lead to a reasonably-priced extension for Bay, if he's willing. Bay signed a four-year deal in '05 to cover his arbitration years.
Bay's agent may advise his client to test the 2009-10 free agent market; he'd be among the best available hitters.

Why don't they restructure his 2009 and add the extension on the end. I know some players rather have the extra money now...
2009 - 12.0M(increase from 7.5M)
2010 - 12.0M
2011 - 12.0M
2012 - 12.0M
2013 - 15.0M (Option, 2.0M B/O)
2014 - 15.0M (Option, 2.0M B/O)
If traded options automatically picked up.
So he is guaranteed 4/50M and it could end up at 6/78M...

to answser your question. there was really only 2. tex and CC and the yanks grossly overspent for them.
are you really going to argue that the current economic state of the country isnt effecting some of these players salaries. cause they clearly are.

look at the deal k rod got. thats a prime example of my point about the economy.
zach u r a fool. bay would strongly consider resigning giving the fact that he isnt guaranteed to find a deal better than what the sox could offer.

Hell he could get a 5-6 year deal for 85-90 mill next year easy, I know of at least 4-5 teams who would love a guy like that.
the only team that would offer that would be the yanks.

Quagmire let me put this in your terms...
You can have three blondes now but if you give up those three blondes now, you may get three blondes and a brunette next year, but it's not guaranteed you may wait and end up with two blondes and a brunette.
You aren't guaranteed anything in the future, you may even go on the ED...
Do you take the deal now, or wait? Giggity-giggity, alright!

but why did k rod have no market? that is a good question

Smoltz, Penny, Saito, Baldelli, Kotsay, Bard, picking up Wakefield's option and the Pedroia extension make a lot more sense for the Sox than Teixeira.
Tex will be paid more...

Bay will command at least 4years/$60 million. Still, he might be tempted to sign, the economy is going to get worse before it gets better.

I'm glad Theo's the one doing the negotiations. Maybe we can get a discount with Bay. He seems to like it here in Boston.

For the Sox fans arguing that Bay loves Boston, just remember something you just signed John Smoltz. Why? Because he gets an opportunity to win and more money than my braves were willing to give. The winning wont make a difference he can win with both the yanks and sox, it comes down to money. Smoltz certainly had a stronger connection to atlanta than bay has to boston.

i was hoping the giants would have a chance to overpay for bay next offseason, hes damn good.

I hope Bay doesn't sign that extension. He's good and I'd love to see him hit the F.A. market after next season.
Do I think he will sign? It's a toss-up, really. If he had Boras, he would hit F.A., but I'm not sure what the history of his agent is.

resign him now

I was reading a couple post earlier ..It was a yankees fan complaining about having the 25th or over pick in the draft and thats why they cant get good players..Well lets see...Lars Anderson 18th round,Kevin Youkilis 8th round,Jon Lester 2nd round... I guess If the scouts did thier job then you would have nothing to worry about would you...
