According to John Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers are pursuing free agent left-hander John Parrish.
Parrish spent most of his time last season with the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse. He was just 1-1 with a 4.04 ERA in six starts and seven relief appearances for the big league club in '08. The 31-year-old represents a cheaper option than some of the other free agent lefties still on the market, including Joe Beimel, who the Tigers were reportedly courting in early December. Beimel's agent said Saturday that he has not heard from the Tigers since the Winter Meetings ended.

If Parrish is used effectively exclusively against lefties, he can post a sub-3.00 ERA. I think the Tigers are looking for what Jamie Walker did for them that one season.

i would like beimel, but as long as we get a decent closer with the money we save then im fine with parrish. I just hope all this money we have been saving with cheap moves isn't going to vanish from the payroll...

Its pretty easy to tell that the Tigers are broke. They haven't signed anybody this offseason. Did a few trades where they probably ended up with the short end.
At least they got rid of Pudge, The Gambler and Jones. You gotta get younger in this new era.

Do you really need "cheap lefty" in the title?
Anyway, agreed, Parrish can be decent if used correctly.
And Tigerman, the money is going to vanish from the payroll. That's the point of cutting payroll...

This is ridiculous sounding but:
Have the Tigers sign a starter (Sheets, Perez, Pedro) and move one of their starters to the closer role (Jackson, Bondo, or Robertson)

John Parrish
vs. Left: .305 vs. Right: .279
He is actually better verus righthanded than left handed hitters
He had the makings of a great long relief pitcher in Baltimore but has never panned out after he got injured.....
Minor League contract worthy tho...

I would hate to think how good the Tigers would be this year had they not traded for Renteria and Cabrera/ Willis.
And look at them now. Broke is saying it nicely.

Look at the dead weight on the Tigers' books.
Willis-10m
Robertson-7m
Bonderman-12.5m
Sheffield-18m
Inge-6.3m
All HORRIBLE contracts. Plus Verlander is going to be free after this year.
They're broke and it's going to get worse before it gets better.

What's up with the "cheap lefty" title?
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | January 11, 2009 at 07:58 PM
You don't think he'll come cheap, NedColletti?
Posted by: Drew Silva | January 11, 2009 at 08:20 PM
I changed the title. Didn't mean to offend.
Posted by: Drew Silva | January 11, 2009 at 08:23 PM
haha cheap lefty
Way to be Drew you got balls stick to ur opinion son, dont change it for these guys. the tigres are being cheap if they weren't they would have signed ollie perez or ben sheets already

I appreciate the love, Mike, but I understand where these guys are coming from. It's putting down Parrish for no real reason... and that wasn't my intention.

I think that "cheap" was quite appropriate. In fact, the three most attractive points about Parrish are 1. He's cheap, 2. He's cheap, and 3. He's cheap. The word "ability" wouldn't crack the top ten. Maybe he fits the "anyone but Rodney" category, but that's about it. Is this the next Jose Mesa, or the next Denny Bautista. Dombrowski has been downright negligent in failing to address the bullpen issues. Disgusting.
BTW- Sheffield gets 14 mil in 2009, and Verlander is first year arb eligible, not free after next season. Just FYI.

First of all, I think the Tigers won the Cabrera/Willis trade with the Marlins. The extension Willis signed, 3/29 million, looks bad in hindsight, but is nowhere near as bad as the Silva signing by the Mariners.
I agree the Renteria trade was Dombrowski's worst, but I don't think Jair Jurrjens (and minor league prospect) Gorkys Hernandez could have made a big enough difference to change the Tigers 08 season.
I also do not view Bonderman to be dead weight, but the Tigers #2 starter.

LOOGYs are supposed to be cheap.
They're just something you don't spend a lot of money/prospects on, same goes for #5 starters. Of course, DD doesn't know that you don't spend big for #5 starters.

"I agree the Renteria trade was Dombrowski's worst, but I don't think Jair Jurrjens (and minor league prospect) Gorkys Hernandez could have made a big enough difference to change the Tigers 08 season."
Yeah, but Jair Jurrjens would make enough of a difference over the next FIVE years. It doesn't have a major impact on '08, but it would have a huge impact on '09 and forward.

The Tigers aren't broke. Ilitch is licking his wounds after the disappointment of '08. If they do something this year, they'll probably open the wallet back up.
Posted by: catswithbats | January 12, 2009 at 11:28 AM
And they did add players. If they were truly broke, they'd be dumping all their big salaries for no name prospects.
Posted by: catswithbats | January 12, 2009 at 11:29 AM
whats the fuss about a closer when there is nothing to close. you're jumping to the end of the game, whereas the Tigers problems are innning 5 6 and 7...give me a lead in the ninth, nobody on and I can get 3 out..no big deal...stop a rally in the 6th, now thats a fireman
