Twins Rumors: Crede, Gagne, Springer

La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune checks in with the latest on the Twins.

  • Free agent third baseman Joe Crede will work out for scouts next week, and the Twins are expected to attend.  Neal's source says Crede believes he's finally overcome his back problems with a minor surgery this winter.  He's willing to sign for one year to re-establish himself.
  • Brandon Lyon and Eric Gagne remain in the Twins' sights, with the Twins "swapping offers" with Scott Boras for Gagne.
  • Neal was able to confirm a rumor first reported by Seth Stohs: the Twins have interest in Russ Springer.

Crede - 1 yr 1 mill with incentives up to 6 mill.

Crede would be a good risk for any AL team seeking a 3b on a one year deal. When he's healthy he's a contributor.

Has there even been a contract that is like a one-year deal with a one-time option for several years after? That would be a smart idea for signing Joe Crede. A low one-year deal with a lot of incentives and an option (possibly vesting?) that made it a 3 or 4 year deal worth much more.

Too bad the Twins aren't opening their new stadium this year (with natural grass)... Crede would have been a perfect fit.

If he has to sign a 1-yr. deal to prove himself, I don't think it will be on artificial turf.

Will the Twins pay Crede in pennies?

The Twins need to do one of 3 things with the third base situation;

1. Sign Crede, put him in the middle of our order for this year and polish up young talent like Luke Hughes and Matt Macri, so one can be ready for the new stadium next year.

2- Move Cuddyer back to third, I know I know, he is an exceptional outfielder and the Twins would hate to move him into the infield, but this way we can keep Span in the lineup along side of Go-Go and DY. The Twins could sacrifice defense at third to get Span in the lineup every day.

3. Make a 2-3 man deal of Bonser/Blackburn/Perkins/Duensing/Prospects to the Rockies(like they tried last year) for Garrett Atkins OR to the Padres for Kevin Kouzmanoff.

On the hush hush, maybe they will go with the Mauer experiment at third if they get another catcher lined up after this year.....

I've never been on the new artificial turf at the dome, but I've heard that it is significantly better than the old stuff for impact/injury. It might not be that big of a deal for a player like Crede. Although he might find a way to get injured regardless of where he is playing.

I think that that would be a good deal with the Twins. A 1 year deal would be nice because he is such a little girl about gettin injured so make him play this year so he can get a good contract next year

Is it just me or would the Twins signing two Boras players (Gagne and Crede) be the most ironic thing of the offseason?

I think the Twins, Cuddyer, Tim Pawlenty, Bob Dylan and Yulia Tymoshenko have made it abundantly clear over and over again that Cuddyer will never, ever, ever, ever, EVER play 3B again.

"Is it just me or would the Twins signing two Boras players (Gagne and Crede) be the most ironic thing of the offseason?"

...plus he represents Gomez. Yet another reason to go for Wiggy and Lyon - don't need Borass around too much, cuddling up to Joey Sideburns.

Ryan,

I wouldn't call Crede a girl about injuries. He has a chronic back problem. I can't imagine that playing baseball is the best thing for the back. Especially at 3rd base.

When he's healthy, Crede is a player I'd want on my team. The problem is, I don't believe he'll ever be fully healthy again.

Crede said that he is healthy. He had a minor surgery this winter. If he looks good next week we have to make him an offer. The better his stats are the more he will make. I am sure he would accept an offer from us, nothing like screwing your old club the white soxs...

Crede would fix the infield issues at 3rd base and give the kids in the minors another year or two to get ready. Finally I would stay clear of Gagne.. Lyons would be a nice addition to the pen.

Getting Crede to take a 1 or 2 year deal will probably require either a lot of money or a vesting option that'll get him some guaranteed years at a good rate, say 1y@3.5m + a 1y@6m vesting option, maybe less on the first year with some more incentives. Boras would want as much non-incentive as possible in case the back doesn't come back, and he'll want to nail down as many extra years as possible in this terrible free agent market. But if the Twins let Casey Blake walk over a third year they sure aren't going to give one to a guy with a bad back who has to play on turf in year 1.
