Jose Valverde and the Houston Astros avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $8MM, Alyson Footer of MLB.com reports.
Valverde, who made $4.7MM in 2008, made 44 saves last season (Houston's single-season record). He had a 3.38 ERA from 74 appearances. The 30-year-old will be a free agent after the season.

Wow. I guess this rules out, Andy Pettitte signing or getting back Wigginton.

Good deal for the Astros here. Valverde is in his final year of arbitration and could have possibly gotten 10MM in arbitration.
Hopefully they can work on an extension during the season. Houston needs to keep this guy because they have no closer candidates in house.

Awesome. Smartest move they've made this year.

So 1 year deal = trade at the All-Star break for prospects? Nice price and if he's half as good as he was last year he should bag a decent haul.
