« Braves Still In Kawakami Mix? | Main | Rangers Not Pursuing Manny Ramirez »
Daniel Barbarisi of The Providence Journal believes the Boston Red Sox and the team's veteran catcher, Jason Varitek, who is currently a free agent, are working on a short-term deal, possibly two years.
Barbarisi writes how the Red Sox usually do not sign aging veterans, so re-signing Varitek would be a catch-22, the title of the article.
Varitek, 36, is looking for a four-year deal worth $40MM, though it's rather unlikely he'll receive one, Barbarisi notes.
From Barbarisi:
"By the numbers, veteran players producing at (Varitek's) level were generally paid between $2MM to $5MM by their teams in 2008, with the exception of the Yankees’ (Ivan) Rodriguez. If Varitek’s price were to drop that low, the Red Sox would probably be happy to bring him back for at least two more years. But if Varitek and Boras stick to their initial demands, the Red Sox will probably go another way and end up with the same production for half the cost."

If we gave Twins a couple guys like a Bowden or Ellsbury another catching prospect and a couple 2nd tier guys like Kris Johnson,Hunter Jones and gave an extension to Mauer then sure...Just dont want to start being like the Yanks and have not much of a farm system..thats all..weve won with players that were supposed to be not as good as the Yanks lineup and we have won..

Ellsbury no, but to get this kind of talent, and helping Sox immediately, I would not try to lowball them. Like I said Twins management is very well runned. This is a MVP kind of player, so have to dish out prospects to get this done, just which ones is the decision 2 teams work on. Our farm is still vey good if deal was done. Plus Varitek signs with someone we getextra pick, use his money to give extension to Mauer. This is the smart move, would be nice.

Can you imagine if Mauer was hitting in the 7th spot last year over Varitek, we would have won easily over 100 games.

chowdah: "I think they have the resources to bid with NYY.Your only gonna go so high no matter who it is."
Well, see, that's the thing. If you're only going to bid the max that a player is worth, the Yankees will outbid you every time.

What Im saying is that if they dont have a bunch of high priced players and have a NEED for someone like Mauer I think they would go all out..They didnt NEED Tex..thats the difference. Thats y they put a cap on him i believe..sure he wouldve helped a bunch but still didnt NEED him.Not worth breaking the bank over..they NEED a catcher so I think they would go a bit higher than his"market value"..But remember, market value is just that..If you have a direct need for a position, your teams "market value" just went up..Thats just my opinion..
Posted by: chowdah | January 05, 2009 at 10:05 AM
I mean the players "market value" just went up because of your teams needs..

Also.... are people really dumb enough to not realize that Hamilton is untouchable?

Boh
..LOL..Yeah I know..but i can still dream..never thought it would actually happen..no way..

the "30m" was obvious exaggeration, my point is the twins are not letting mauer leave minnesota. they have him for 2 more seasons and will definately sign him to an extension.
the twins make smart decisions and let guys go at teh right time, torii hunter 32 years old? why would they give him 5 years? Santana, why give him 20m when they have so much depth?
How many catchers in the game play defense on an elite level and can hit like him? No. You just cant replace him, you can replace a CF or 1B or pitcher but a catcher like mauer? you cant
And if you want Boston to trade for Mauer, he's 25! you have to give up more then Bowden and 2nd tier prospects, you guys are dreaming.

They gave up on Garza,Santana and Hunter was The Angels Best player in the playoffs..better than Tex..all im saying is its def a possibility..and Yes ,i think they would want waaay too much in return on a trade..The Twins payroll was 56mil last year..I dont think they will break tradition and give a guy half the payroll because thats about what he will be able to get on the open market and I think he knows that..If you were offered 10-15mil per or 25 which one would you take?
Posted by: chowdah | January 05, 2009 at 10:56 AM
Not saying im 100% right..just trying to be realistic based on what the Twins have always done..they got a great scouting dept. to be able to be in the hunt year after year and still let all their big players go..I just dont think this will be any different IMHO..It would really shock everyone if they were able to resign him..

The Twins own is worth almost THREE times as much as Steinbrenner is. 1.3b -> 3.1b
Ok Hunter was good last year, how about for the next 4 when hes getting paid 18m?
They didn't give up on Garza, they traded pitching, which they had a ton of depth in, for a #1 overall pick who should be 20/20 with a rocket arm.
You have this image of the Twins as the marlins, get it out of your head. They paid Nathan 50m, Morneau 80m, Mauer 33m, Cuddyer 24m. And their all got raises, totally anothe 10m onto their payroll. They also previously gave contracts to Hunter (32m), Santana (40m)

"If you were offered 10-15mil per or 25 which one would you take?"
1. my 30m figure was off, i cant see anyone giving a catcher 20m
2. you're forgetting that Mauer is a hometown kid, drafted #1 by his hometown team, ever hear of hometown discount? You know that thing Arroyo did 2months before Theor shipped him out.
If it's 7yrs @ 17m or 8yrs @ 20m, what do you think he'll do?
Posted by: Zack | January 05, 2009 at 12:52 PM
Brian Giles took a discount, Peavy took a discount to stay in San Deigo, Ken Griffey took a discount to go to Cincinnati. Obviously not everyone does, Teixeira just recently. But seriously who would go to Nationals?
Posted by: Zack | January 05, 2009 at 01:00 PM
all part of their plan. they will then proceed to trade bucholz to the diamondbacks or texas for teagarden or montero (personally i would rather have teagarden)

Congrats, Mr. Barbarino on not shedding anything new to the Varitek situation. What a waste of time this article was...

Bucholz will be staying, trade would have been made by now.

What those of you who are suprised by our willingnesss as Sox fans to let Tek walk dont understand is loyalty is a two way street. While he has every right to play the market, he cashed in all of his loyalty chips to do so. In my eyes he's free agent Jason Varitek, and well thats not worth much anymore. I have no hard feelings its just time to move on, he made his bed now its time to lie in it.

Yeah..the twins will give that first extension but when it comes to the BIG money, they'll back off...Im not saying anything negative about your precious twins...thats just what they do...They gave their first round of extensions out already..So when it comes time to pay Mauer more than his 12.5 hes getting in 2010 or Morneaus 14 mil in 2014 or Nathans 12.5 in 2012(2milbuyout)Cuddyers 10.5 in 2010(1mil buyout)We will see just how deep his pockets go..The Sox owners, are Billionaires too..doesnt mean they going to spend it all..Dont get so offended at the thought that someone might jump ship to get a bigger payday ..This is MLB..it happens....Thats the Twins track record....
