Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News reports that the New York Yankees are about to introduce first baseman Mark Teixeira as the newest Yankee. McCarron's source believes the press conference could be as early as Tuesday.
Teixeira agreed to an eight-year, $180MM contract before Christmas. The deal has not been officially announced because Teixeira must first pass a physical that could be scheduled for Monday, McCarron writes.

they are going to be really really good this year, a helluva lot younger too with CC Tex and Swisher all under 30

Yankees have had better teams since their last Championship in 2000 and haven't done anything but lose in October to the D'Backs, Angels (twice), Marlins, and Red Sox all in historic fashion.

Yah, most teams get young through the draft, the Yankees do it by replacing older 20 million dollar players with younger ways, very savvy moves they've made

What if he failed his physical??
lol

Gotta love the moves the Yankees made this winter.
Officially got a whole lot younger & athletic. They got specifically what they needed not excess, Pitching was # 1 priority and it was established. A first baseman was second priority and they obtained that as well.
Now I would make at least 1 trade of the outfield surplus and obtain anything young in return, preferably infielder or lefty pitcher.
Posted by: K-ace | January 04, 2009 at 06:05 PM
The Yankees need 3 more solid starting pitchers. Joba is still a big ? as far as handling the new work load, Wang has to prove he can bounce back, and who is the #5 starter.
You can have all the offense in the world, like the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers and the 1988 Oakland Athletics, but in the end the pitching is what counts, just ask the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers of those same years lol.
But it is good to see the Yanks going young and establishing continuity over a long period of time. The prospects mixed with the stars they need is how you build a winning ballclub.

If Tex failed his physical I would probably laugh as hard as I did the first time I saw Ace Ventura in the theater! LOL

K-ace, that was some of the simplest, best analysis of the Yankees I've seen all winter. Nothing about how much money they've spent or any of that crap. Well said. I don't think it's necessary to trade from the outfield surplus though, unless we can get good value.
Also... we definitely don't need three more solid starting pitchers. We need one. Two if Joba were to go back to the pen, but hopefully that won't happen. Adding Pettitte would do the trick.
Posted by: NYYanksCaptain23 | January 04, 2009 at 06:20 PM
Well, We don't need more pitching at all.
Just Andy Pettite or Ben sheets for one year for him to establish himself, and hopefully for us he will eat innings.
Other then that, Really looking forward to Mark Texeira Press Conference.
Anyone else excited besides me?
Posted by: K-ace | January 04, 2009 at 06:32 PM
Im pretty excited. I wonder what number he chooses.

Tex can kiss my A$$

At this point in time I hope the yankees franchise ceases to exist. No matter how it comes to be, I will rejoice in their demise.

hahaha thats frunny coming from a celtics fan

The Yankees did spend way too much this offseason. But I could care less because they are wasting their own money. i dont't like their tactic but what can you do. I heard the Yankees want an infielder. I think Miguel Cairo could be a good signing.

damn beat me...
Posted by: yankfan1 | January 04, 2009 at 07:20 PM
I don't care the anti-yankees opinion. We the hard core Yankees are very happy whit the mew pitchers; Texeira and Swisser. In first place, last place, world champions or whatever, I'm a YANKEE with no bleeding colors.
Posted by: vapapo | January 04, 2009 at 07:46 PM
Why hold a press conference? We all know he signed there for the money and ONLY the money but will spin some trash about how he's excited about "being a Yankee". The only reason he's excited is b/c of the paycheck.

The Yanks should add Pettite and maybe another IF, perhaps Juan Uribe? Or maybe a quality bat to come off the bench sort of like a Ruben Sierra type. Maybe Garciappara?

i would like to see a few more moves, i'd really like a sigining of nomar and baldelli, nomar is a very versatile backup/ spot starter, rocco could start in center if he can stay healthy, or be used in a rotation, but in order to sign roco one or may be even 2 outfielders would need to be moved, preferably matsui.

Too bad the Yanks didn't offer the most money.
Posted by: Colton | January 04, 2009 at 08:34 PM
everything about the yankees dollars spent this season is taken sooooo greatly out of context..its a ridiculous sum anyway you choose to cut it but nobody in the media even bothers to mention the deals are for 5, 7, and 8 years whenever they throw the numbers out to try and grab some extra readers...and thats before you even get into the whole didnt really add any money story when you subtract what came off the books, because if you know anything, you know the payroll still has a shot at being lower if they dont sign another FA starter.

he also grew up a huge mattingly fan and now he will be following in his footsteps AND he and his wife supposidly just reallllly didnt want to be in boston, i mean who would

It wasn't ONLY the money, as it is rumored that Washington was willing to go higher. If you want to say it is a combination of money & a chance at being on a contending team (probably in that order), then you are correct.
Posted by: yclept | January 04, 2009 at 08:51 PM
dont forget about the Mattingly thing!

Very good article from Baseball America in '06 about Teixeira and why he may have had beef w/ Boston stemming from when he was a high school kid and they drafted him.

Just to put things in perspective, according to Fangraphs the Yankees are not overpaying Teixera, they are merely paying him what his value has averaged out to being over the last three year. If you average the Fangraphs values for Tex over the last three year of play he is worth $19.6 million, 21.2MM if you weight the years values in a 5/4/3 manner. The Yankees are paying him $20MM each of the next two years and 22.5MM in subsequent years. It's really not a bad contract if you look at it this way. As long as he performs in a similar way the Yankees should get what they are paying for.

As for the press conference I can't wait to hear what Tex has to say about joining the Yankees. It will be an asset to the Yankees to finally have a legitimate 1st basemen who can hit for average, power, and also play solid defense. He should be a good fit on this team.
Posted by: Jeff Levy | January 04, 2009 at 10:09 PM
I heard the Yankees will sign a bag of cash to fill one of the rotation holes
Posted by: exitfare | January 04, 2009 at 11:44 PM
Jeff Levy-
Yeah, but when taking means, you have to take into account that 2008 was a mad outlier, as his 2008 seeason was worth 30.5MM. No other season of his has been worth more than 20MM, with 2006 being 11.9MM and 2007 being 16.5MM.
There is zero, repeat, zero evidence that Teixeira will repeat his 2008 performance for even one more year, let alone the 4-5 years he would have to to make that contract worth it. Slightly better than the 2007 performance looks much more realistic, and then you're looking at possible age declining as well.
All in all, a shaky signing, especially for a 1Bman.

One play away from DL.
Posted by: Cyyoung | January 05, 2009 at 07:46 AM
You'll probably see swisher start in CF for the year and melky will get traded.

So you dont think batting between A-Rod and Jeter is goin to help his numbers?? I sure do
Posted by: Joba | January 05, 2009 at 11:13 AM
I do not see Texieras numbers improving. Jeter's numbers have been declining over the past few seasons. Having A-Rod behind him will not change much as Guerrero was behind him last year.
Posted by: gdfbaseball | January 05, 2009 at 12:16 PM
Without Texeira, there are 40 guys on the roster right now. That means one of them has to go. My money is on Shelley Duncan. However, it could be Dan Giese or Chase Wright.
The excuse of 'the holidays' was used to delay Tex' physical. However, I would think the Yankees have something else up their sleeves. Could this be the day Melky is traded?

I'm really not sure why people have a problem w/ this signing. You guys are acting as if last year was some "fluke" of a season. In fact it wasn't even his career best. He did avg 38 hrs and 118 rbis over the previous 4 seasons. Even if he hit .290/.380/30/110 over next 5 years w/ gold glove defense he would still be the best 1B in the AL.
Morneau and Youks put up good numbers and would probably command close to what in the open market.
Cabrera has great numbers as well but doesn't have the glove that Tex has and he'll make 20 mil or better from 2010 to 2015.
