« Astros Not Pursuing Dunn | Main | Rays To Sign Morgan Ensberg »
According to the AP, the Athletics signed pitcher Edgar Gonzalez to a minor league deal today. Gonzalez, 26 in a few weeks, posted a 6.00 ERA in 48 innings for Arizona last year. A strained elbow ended his season in July. On the plus side, he's flashed superb control in many recent stints.

Why?

AAA fodder.

He's really not as bad as everyone thinks. Last year he had a bad season before he shut it down but he's good for a few spot starts.

I don't really get this one

Is he the guy who pitched pretty well during the Caribbean World Series?
Am I the only guy who watched it on MLBTV?

AAA fodder for when Anderson, Cahill, et all are pitching in the big leagues.

The A's got a player that has so much potential, he is a solid pitcher that can be at almost every rotation in baseball i just watch him play the Serie del Caribe in Mexicali, and he look good, he really dominated, he was going into a no hitter until the 5th inning, he ended up allowing only 2 hits, 9 strikeouts, no walks, in 7 inning, i think that he has a big chance of cracking the roster,

XD23 no i watched too, but not on MLBTV i watched it on ESPNDEPORTES, and yes that is him, i cant believe that arizona gave up on him, he could be, really good,

Marquez: Well, that is pretty encouraging.
As much as I love how Beane can find all these hidden gems in pitchers, I wish that he would find more of them in batters. Especially, right handed batters, more like Matt Holliday.

Find hidden gems in pitchers then sell high on them in trades for hitters?

It hasn't really worked out that well for Beane. Look at Hudson/Mulder/Zito/Harden/Blanton.
What do you get out of all that?
No superstar hitter. Some good yes. But no superstar. Cardenas will probably be good, but he's no Matt Holliday.

green and gold-
Prospects with the upside of "superstar hitter" don't get traded. It is very, VERY rare that you see elite prospects changing hands (the ones with true "superstar" upside, like Wieters, Rasmus, etc.).
And, having a bunch of guys with the upside of above average players (Cunningham, Carter, Cardenas) is much better than having one guy with "superstar" upside.
You're telling me Mulder trade didn't work out that well? Are you crazy?
Harden was a coin toss. Either Beane takes the package at the deadline (although I do agree that BB could've waited until later in the deadline) or he runs the HUGE risk of Harden getting hurt and the A's not getting anything out of him. Gallagher has very solid upside, is the most likely of the A's bunch of young pitchers to pan out, and enables the A's to trade one of Mazarro/Simmons/Gio to help with the hitting issues.
I'll give you that the Huddy trade was fail, and that the A's could have gotten more for Blanton, when considering that he wasn't an injury risk.
And the A's were contending in 2006; they don't have to trade EVERYONE, which is why Zito wasn't traded.
Beane is going to have to draft his superstar hitter, since the A's probably won't be giving out 100MM++ contracts any time soon. Either draft of strike lightning in a bottle. Which he has been able to do with hitting, ala Jack Cust (although he isn't a superstar, he is an above average offensive player).

I'm not saying that the Mulder trade didn't work out. I'm saying that so far, it hasn't worked out for the offense.
I loved that trade and I loved the Haren trade that came out of it. It was because of that trade they we restocked our farm system.
The Brewers did trade LaPorta for Sabathia. I know that was a special circumstance at the trade deadline, but Beane couldn't get Vitters or Donald??
He did get Cardenas. Cardenas and Donald would have been too much for Blanton, but I think he could have at least gotten Vitters instead of Patterson/Murton.
Don't get me wrong. I think that Gallagher will be good, but I think he could have gotten more for Harden and Gaudin.

As long as he doesnt block any of our young pitchers. Including G-Gon. then im fine with this signing.

The media overvalued Harden. I will take 25+ starts of league average pitching over 10-15 starts of HOF caliber pitching every day. Gallagher will probably give you the former. I'm very iffy about putting Gaudin in that package, but I think it was fair. Beane had to trade Harden at that point. If he gets hurt, the A's keep him, are on the hook for his salary, and get nothing in a trade. And if he gets hurt for '09, he probably won't make Type A status.
Blanton was the deal I really didn't like with Beane. Blanton was a pure sell low. BB should easily have been able to get Cardenas + Donald for Blanton. Easily.
Posted by: melonis rex | February 10, 2009 at 09:08 AM
It wasn't a sell low on Blanton, he just isn't worth that much. He's just an innings eater, still under team control.
It would have been nice to get Donald + Cardenas, but I don't see that deal happening.

A's sign Edgar Gonzalez? Why in the hell would they sign this guy? He's a nobody.
Posted by: BoSox4lyfe | February 10, 2009 at 11:49 AM
A's got Cardenas + Josh Donaldson + pieces for Joe Blanton. Donaldson is probably a Top-5 Catching Prospect in the Minors (for some). What's not to like about a trade that brings back a Top-5 Secondbaseman + Top-5 Catching Prospect?
