Cardinals Far Apart With Ankiel, Ludwick

As reported by MLB.com's Matthew Leach, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said Wednesday that little progress has been made with arbitration-eligible outfielders Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick.

"There's not a whole lot to comment on," Mozeliak said. "Right now we're just preparing. I think if there is a settlement before we enter in, it would be a [last-minute] type of thing."

Both players are pretty far apart in negotiations with the club.  Ludwick asked for $4.25MM and was offered $2.8MM, while Ankiel asked for $3.3MM and the Cardinals countered with $2.35MM.  The Cards haven't required an arbitration hearing since 1999, but it looks like that's about to change.

I'll trade for both of them while giving up Soriano?...lol..

Good, now trade Luddy to us

They will screw this up just like the whole off season we have had! I've been a Cards fan my whole life and this offseason has showed me they are not making the moves needed to win

KJ+a prospect could get Ludwick?

I agree, southpaw. This organization isn't doing anything to make the team better. Basically this whole off-season they have rented a shortstop for a year and picked up some average, at best, left handed pitchers. The thing that kills me is that dedicated Cardinals fans will still pack the seats game after game. The big shots know this, and that's why they aren't worried about spending any money. They know we'll pay the money to go to Busch whether they make some big moves or not.

No Joke we sign lefties who have a era of 8 great! We are banking on Carp being ready so here we go again with that and are biggest problem the closer spot we are going to go in house oh boy

How can you say the Cardinals have made a ton of bad moves this off-season?!?!? Bad moves would be holding on to Ankiel and possibly both of these guys could be a mistake! Ludwick I'm tempted to hold on to, but Ankiel should've been shipped out already, HE"S A BORAS CLIENT!!!

Are you all really serious? In a fading economy you're talking about the Cardinals, the ST. LOUIS Cardinals forking up millions rather than trying out in-house options that could save money for years.... Is it giving you the best chance NO, but is this one of the largest markets, HELL NO!

Agree 100%

The Cardinals have had a rough offseason, losing out on Holliday and Peavy and Fuentes and now floated the idea of selling instead of buy. Surprised they didn't look at Looper, or Wolf for that matter. The cornerstone is obviously Albert, but he didn't even get his way when his hopes were squashed about Manny

The Cardinals fan usually dont ask for much but i think im among the many that are sick of them just doing enough to get by

Sign Sheets?

Sign Sheets?

I think some of you guys need to wake up. Not sure what moves you have been expecting...but the Cards are not giving a pitcher 3-5 years (and alot of these guys have been asking including Looper) and they never really were players for Peavy as the price was too high. The market is slow. I think they will make a trade and possibly a last minute move, but a trade is probably n ot gonna happen until these free agent outfielders find homes. Nobody is gonna make a trade for the Cards outfielders giving up players when they can sign an Abreu, Dunn, etc. Be patient!

And they won't invest in injury prone pitchers...they just won't. The idea of the FO making some big move is just wishful thinking. They are pushing the farm system and it has been working. For those who prefer proven players you will probably not be happy. Oh well. Maybe you should look forward to see who will step up this season (Rasmus, Wallace, Motte/Perez, etc) instead of bitching about woulda coulda shoulda.

I am not saying they shouldn't make a move. I just think the market is setting the pace. They will probably only trade or sign a pitcher on the cheap...which means its gonna be a while. Get over it.

And this team is not that bad. They have improved from last year's team.

Well said, hombrej. And the cubs have gotten worse. We aren't better than them yet, but we're within the "with a little luck" category of being there, and I'll really be surprised if another move doesn't happen once petulant child and the other multitude of FA OF's sign somewhere.

I'd be worried if I was a Cards fan about Pujols in 2012. I know I shouldn't start this debate again. But it could be like Lebron with the Cavs when he went public saying he was unhappy with the team not supplying any talent around him. Pujols is the type of player that would honor a franchise as long as they as driven to compete year in year out. He would probably take less than he is worth to stay with the Cardinals if they had a shot. but I would be worried because Pujols is not going to be a Trevor Hoffman and stay with a losing franchise because he enjoys it there.

Manny and Pujols in the same lineup. Wow. Whoever would be batting 2nd would not see a curve ball all year (exaggerating of course but you get my drift).

I don't get the bad wrap on Manny. Up until last year every teammate and coach said he was great in the clubhouse and had great work ethic. Yes he is Manny but it never hurt the team or his production. There are bigger cancers in baseball who are getting contracts this year (Pavano, Bradley etc) so why not Manny? To not even be open to the idea, at any price is just ridiculous.

hombrej

I understand what you are saying about bringing up some of these young guys, and I completely agree. It will be exciting to see Rasmus and Wallace get their shots this year. Also, it seems that a lot of the time the younger players can really add a needed spark to this team, but I still don't see why the front office will not go after at least one proven pitcher, whether it be a closer or a starter. Maybe they will wait the market out and we'll land somebody at a discount price. We'll see.

STL

I think that there will be a lot of pitchers available at the start of ST that will take a one year deal. I still kinda think they are trying to trade for that pitcher but I could be wrong.

Yanks09-

Pujols will have guys around him by 2012. Rasmus and Wallace for sure.

As far as Manny...he would be a great guy to have behind Pujols. That bad rep...he earned that by quitting on his teammates. Something StL won't be interested in unfortunately.

I agree with hombrej. I think all of you naysayers will be surprised as to how good of a team we will have this year. Just look at the 2008 American League Champion Tampa Bay Rays - whom by the way damn near won the WS by means of using what? That's right, mainly in-house talent. To me the Rays proved that you don't have to pay out millions upon millions upon millions in proven player salary like the Cubs and Yankees have in order to get to and win the WS. I thnink you naysayers need to take a few steps back and look at the whole picture before you go on a rant about how stingy our FO is. We don't NEED Peavy, nor Fuentes to get back to October baseball. What we do need however is for our young talent to step up and make prime contributions. That might just mean the difference as to who wins the NL central division this year.

For all you naysayer Cards fans and you phantasm Cubs fans, go read this before pronouncing who's gonna or who's not gonna win the NL Central division this year:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AiknVMiJIuYpzH4TJTm4jCYRvLYF?slug=cardskidscouldtrumpcubsv&prov=tsn&type=lgns

hey ozarks, dick justice is a moron who doesn't know what he's talking about, cards might be okay in the weak central but the cubs are gonna take the division unless huge injuries happen. Cubs might not have the team they did last year, they might even have a better one. and im a cards fan

I don't think spending money to make Albert happy is that important right now, when he's in his last year or so, then it may make sence, I do think keeping Ryan for another season will either make him a better trading piece or maybe even a more valuable member, after all, it's been injurys that has kept him down, he's always had a good bat, he is well worth the $4 million he's asking for, as far as Ankil goes, I do think he should be traded, but with his late season injury last year, they wouldn't have gotton his value, I think they should hope for the best and trade him in July if he;s not hurt. Now I can't stand the moves that Joe has made so far, he's no Walt thats for sure, but by not having Izzy closing, we are already a much better team. Spending the big bucks just isn't the cardinal way, it never has been, Big Mac was a novelty needed to draw fans in an era in which the cards were a descent team at best, Walt spent more cash while in charge than anybody else ever has for the cards, they put a stop to it, and he left. If he was still there, things probaly wouldn't be much different. It is what it is, I'd love it for them to go get Peavy, but I believe he's getting about $17 a year, I just don't see them spending that kind of money, except for on Pujols. It's gonna be a long season, but I think we will compete, and there is a good chance of winning the division. Just my opinions.

The Cards have to do something!! Maybe Larry Walker has been working out...

Im very optimistic about the cardinals chances. Of course we would love to see big names come to our town, but I am much more excited about the young guys we have progressing in our farm system. ill take my chances for this coming year when u look at the extended possibilities our future has to offer.

And... as far as the cubs are concerned, yeah they have spent the money, but have also become more injury prone and i believe much less deep. Of course they are set up to have a good year again this year, but i dont think they have as strong of a team as they had last year, and their farm system sucks=shortly(within a couple of years) the cubs will be back to the bottom.

Everybody knows the Cardinals aren't gonna spend anymore money than they have to. Dal Maxville made good deals and I haven't seen Mozelik make one yet. I'm a die hard Cardinals' fan and it pisses me off to see him get rid of all the good players and bring in duds, guys who are washed up. I've got a bad feeling if we don't win, we'll lose Pujols too.

The cards have 6-7 guys that could be a team's 4th or better outfielder. They should package 2 of them and get a quality number two starter or a setup man/closer in return. I live in St. Louis (not a Cards fan), and the one thing Cards fans have is pride. It doesn't matter what you tell them, they will alway say their players are the best.

The Cards will lead the league in blown saves this year.
