« Cards Sign 17 Pre-Arb Players | Main | Juan Cruz To Royals? »
According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times the Cubs agreed to sign Corey Koskie to a minor league deal. He'll compete for a backup job with the Cubs this spring. Koskie, who has agreed to play for Canada in the WBC, has missed large chunks of time because of concussions.
The update comes from Wittenmyer's Twitter account. Remember to follow MLBTR on Twitter, too.
In a press release, the Cubs say the deal is pending a physical. Koskie will report to Cubs camp after the WBC.

Good luck to Corey, who saw this coming?

Thats odd...the Cubs certainly need a backup 3rd baseman...but we certainly dont need another lefthanded hitter on the bench.
I think it would be best for the Cubs to ditch Koskie and go for Nomar if he is willing to sign for a million or 2.

@namesake49 : You want the cubs to go for an older guy who has been victim to injuries recently and has seen his prime cut short. instead of a guy who still has potential and could the best feel-good story this side of Rocco Baldelli?

I was surprised to see that Koskie once stole 27 bases in a season. He was always a decent hitter, with some power, and would take a walk. But he hasn't played in a long, long time. This is purely speculative by the Cubs, I wouldn't expect him to make the team. But it would be a good story if he did.

I like Koskie and all, but you can't act like the above sentence doesn't apply to him also, maybe even more so then Nomar.

I like the signing, if he win s the job, great, if not, well then who cares? Low risk/decent reward signing is always a good move if you can get him as cheap as he will be for the cubs.

Nomar has had injury shortened or off seasons better then Corey Koskie's best season

Yea, phoenix...I would prefer Nomar over Koskie. When it comes down to it, I dont expect ARam to miss more than 10 or so games this year, so a good replacement is not needed. What the Cubs need is a clutch hitter who can come off the bench and hit right-handed. Nomar is mostly a singles hitter nowadays, and he can play a decent defensive 3rd base for the times ARam isnt in the lineup. Not to mention that Nomar has postseason experience, so he would be a good pinch-hitter in the postseason.
Thats my arguements. Koskie may be a good bench player, but who are we gonna take off the roster for him? Hoffpauer is good, but I think he is more trade bait than anything. Signing Nomar allows the Cubs to trade Hoff for (lets all say it lol) more pitching, preferably left-handed pitching.
