5:19 pm: Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Aurilia is thinking over the Giants' offer.
In a phone interview, Aurilia acknowledged that many players are settling for minor league offers. "It's something we're mulling over," he said. "We're trying to counter-proposal them a little bit and see what we can come up with."
Aurilia thinks he would be a valuable addition to a young infield like the Giants' and said that he was "hoping to nail this down."
4:39 In an update to his blog, the San Jose Mercury News' Andrew Baggarly reports that the San Francisco Giants have made an offer to Rich Aurilia.
The offer is a non-guaranteed, minor-league contract that would pay Aurilia $1MM if he were to make the major league team, with some additional incentives as well.
Baggarly says the Phillies are in on Aurilia as well, but Baggarly says Brian Sabean isn't sure of the extent of the Phillies' interest.
Baggarly also writes that Aurilia is interested in a return to the Giants.

Have to say, if I was Richie, I'd be insulted by this offer. Not the money so much as the non-guaranteed minor league invite. He deserves more than that. This reeks of "well we made him an offer" just to say that they did. Even as a Giants fan who'd love to see Richie back, I hope he goes to the Phillies if they show him more respect.

Shawn- I COMPLETELY AGREE... couldn't have said it better myself. I would be offended by that offer not money wise but a minor league contract? Are you serious? If he accepts then he is either
1.) Really desperate
2.) He really does love it in SF.
Id rather retire than take that offer.

Wouldn't be surprised at all to see a lot more players go the route of Paul Byrd, Sean Casey, Curt Schilling, Ray Durham etc.. That is, either flat out announce retirement, or wait until mid summer when somebody needs a tough vet and is actually willing to pay instead of this insulting nonsense for a quality guy like Aurilla that should be able to get a MLB job on multiple teams easily.
Come June or so he can probably still get at least as much when an injury occurs and on some contender to boot.
