Ned Colletti: GM Trade History

MLBTR contributor Brendan Bianowicz is back with a new installment in our GM Trade History series: Ned Colletti of the Dodgers.  Click here to download the spreadsheet chronicling Colletti's work.

My god, he's terrible.

Ethier and Manny (which was mainly McCourt), and that's it. :o

Lots of sketch trades here. Colletti's best trade was Bradley for Ethier though.

Only signing I really find good is the Kuroda signing, but then I think a lot of that was Logan White, and the Furcal signing has tons of potential.

I see that Jhonny Nunez made an appearance in the Dodgers minor league system at one time, being traded for the fine Marlon Anderson. Wow, Sox definitely picked choice guys for the Swisher trade.

The players traded in the Maddux deal were Michael Watt and Eduardo Perez, btw.

Colletti should just delete Friedman's number and email from his contact list. It just doesn't work out well for him.

OK. Upon further observation and more caffeine, Ned Colletti is f-cking horrible as a GM. One of the worst.

Kuroda was all White.

After looking at this, I am wondering why some still think this guy deserves more time.

Oh cmon you guys, leave him be! So what if he doesn't use statistics or computers or all that other nonsense when evaluating players? He uses "heart", and THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS.

Butbutbutbut statheads are awesome... :(

Colletti makes very few trades. Manny was handed to him on a silver platter and they didn't have to give up anything or pay him a dime.

He will be aggressive on free agents - Jason Schmidt 3/45, Andruw 2/36, Pierre 5 and 40+.

I don't see much of the backlash against Colletti from this trade list. I would say that he came out better on:

1. Ethier
2. Maddux (the first time)
3. Proctor (arguable)
4. Manny

I would say that he's come out worse on:
1. Duaner Sanchez
2. Cody Ross
3. Blake for Meloan/Santana (which still depends on how both prospects develop)

Both Sanchez and Ross are pretty fringy. The rest of the trades are mostly lateral moves or involve players who didn't make much of an impact for either team.

Now, the trade history obviously doesn't cover Colletti's boneheaded free agent signings, which is where he deserves the most blame. However, in a vacuum, the trade history isn't terrible and probably a plus for Colletti.

It appears he's learning on the job. Hope this is his last season with the dodgers since its the last on his contract.

NedCollettiClueless I held out way too long thinking Colletti would get it right...but I admit your right...he is a !#@ing idiot and needs to go. His trade history is okay but his choice in free agents is killing this team.

Our pitching is fourth best in the league behind SF, ARI, and SD, our offense is the better than anyone elses minus Manny and one of the best in the NL with. But are we really expecting to compete with a rotation of
1. Bills (young and good but ready to be the ace?
2. Kuroda (not yet fully established but a solid #3)
3. Wolf (good pick up if healthy this time around
4. Kershay (first full season in the bigs
5. ??Shmidts a joke, McDondal is supposedly in the pen, Stults is a good spot starter, Trancoso didnt fully cut it as a reliever...and seriously Estes or Vargas?

It appears he's learning on the job. Hope this is his last season with the dodgers since its the last on his contract.

but then u'd have to change ur name lol.

but for his trades, we have to be smart. he wasnt able to make big trades cause the dodgers had all their top prospects in the majors, so he had to make trades that didnt help either team. now we saw him become more active this year cause the dodgers were in contention and they had a new crop of players that were blocked by the kemps, ethiers, and martins of the organization. It'll be interesting if they trade lambo or dejesus(though i dont want them to) cause dewitt's here for 6yrs, and furcal/blake signed for 3 yrs, and depending on Manny, could be 3 yrs by the end of it.

You can't just look at Colletti's trades in the view of the present. You need to look at the value of all the pieces at the time of the trade. It's only then that you see how horrible he is.

Duaner Sanchez, Joel Guzman, Dioner Novarro, Jon Meloan and Carlos Santana all had tremendous value at the time of their trades. Colletti managed to get back absolutely nothing worth keeping in any of those trades. He has depleted the talent level of the farm system without replacing it with any value.
He's horrible in trading value at the time of each trade. If not for Logan White, I fear Colletti would trade away everyone that has ANY value for Omar Vizquel.

melonis rex-You have any hard evidence that Kuroda's signing was mostly Logan White's doing through scouting?

I know it's inferred, and highly plausible, but i'm just looking for something more official. Thanks.

What would we get if we trade Lambo, DeJesus, Elbert or McDonald or a combo of them?
Scott Baker?
Roy Oswalt?
Jake Peavy?

Good job Brendan!

Just goes to show you how raw a deal Dan Evans received from the Dodgers and teh McCourt regime. Seriously, for a guy who learned under the great Brian Sabean, is thsi really a surprise?

I too thought Dan Evan got a raw deal, he had to fix the Kevin Malone reign of terror..the horror..the horror

Ah Colletti, you made one fine trade, and basically traded away much of our talent for players like Seo, Hendrickson, Baez, and Lugo.

Can you imagine if we still had guys like Jackson, Duaner Sanchez (give the guy a break - he had a freak taxi accident...other than that he has been a solid set-up guy over the years), Joel Guzman, Navarro, Meloan and Santana. Granted Navarro was traded when he was injured and being replaced by Martin, but the other guys are no excuse trades.

Worst GM in baseball!

"Our pitching is fourth best in the league behind SF, ARI, and SD, our offense is the better than anyone elses minus Manny and one of the best in the NL with."

What? Better than who exactly? LA's offense last year was 4th worst in the NL.

What would we get if we trade Lambo, DeJesus, Elbert or McDonald or a combo of them?
Scott Baker?
Roy Oswalt?
Jake Peavy?

we could probably get just about anyone in basedball, besides CC and maybe halladay

but look at who would have been blocked, martin(navarro), jackson wasnt good for a few yrs after he was traded, sanchez seemed we took all the good pitches out of him, guzman has been up and down, meloan and santana, both we need to wait and see, but sanatana was blocked by martin and loney, if hed have to move, which many scouts feel he will, and meloan isnt expected to be much more than a bullpen arm, and we need to wait and see if he's any better.

so he traded talent that was blocked, but really good, for mainly crap, butwith some did get some good vets.

btw phills, he was talking post manny(over 1/2 run better) and the playoffs

Sure, they would've had to have been traded *eventually*, but that doesn't mean they had to be traded FOR THOSE PACKAGES AT THOSE TIMES. Texas has a surplus of catchers. Does that mean they're dumping them for nothing? No. Oakland and Tampa Bay both have a TON of young pitching depth (Tampa Bay has much more at the MLB level though). Do you see them selling off arms to fill short-term needs? No. Cleveland had 2 catchers this season. What did they do? Trade FOR a third catcher.

Navarro, Jackson, and Santana were easily top 100 prospects at the time of trade. And where did you see the reports from scouts that said that Santana would probably have to move from catcher. I've heard the opposite. And Meloan has the potential to be an elite relief arm. As in closer.

Quick clarification on my previous post, before someone says "Matt Holliday was a short term need". The A's sold high on Smith (horrible peripherals) and got fair value for Street.

If a team is going to trade off a surplus, they still need to make sure that they're getting proper/fair value for the player(s) they're trading away. Something Colletti hasn't done.

kensai-

I'm trying to find a more official link(I've found blogs but not much else), but I'm pretty sure Ned Colletti never went to Japan to see Kuroda pitch in person; only White did. I did find articles that stated that Logan saw Kuroda pitch multiple times live, but none that state that Colletti didn't go to Japan.

Good:
Bradley for Ethier
LaRoche/Morris for Ramirez
Both Maddux deals
Blake signing
Both Furcal signings
Kuroda signing
Drafting Kershaw
Bringing in Joe Torre

Bad:
Trading Santana and Meloan for Blake (this could easily get ugly, depending on how the two pan-out)

Ugly:
Juan Pierre signing
Andruw Jones signing
Jason Schmidt signing

He really hasn't had any terrible trades, he has just swung and missed on three HUGE free agent deals. That Santana/Meloan deal could be seen as terrible for half a season of Blake..

The Padres received Eduardo Perez and Michael Watt for Maddux.

i agree with you colleti shouldnt be the dodgers GM, it should be white or Ng. there were reports from this site and a dodgers scout(top 10 or 15 prospects after last year, sorry no link, it was a while ago) saying that Santana will probably have to move to 1st, cause his D/ gamecalling isn't very good. Meloan im not going to say i know alot about him, all i know is he had been in some big packages(peavy) and was traded for blake. I wish colleti would have payed 2m or so and just give up meloan or santana and use the other either in the bigs or in a bigger trade. if either meloan or santana was for Manny, i could see that, but not blake
