Odds and Ends: Griffey, Blue Jays, Roberts

You don't like that argument MOST LIKELY because it is not a good one.

There are some good reasons to sign Roberts to an extension, however, there aren't ANY good reasons to have signed Roberts to the extension that we did.

I would love to have him for either the price he signed for for half the years, or the amount of time he signed for for a little more than half the price.

Is B-Rob really worth 3 years and 33 million more than Orlando Hudson? No.

To the Orioles he is. Everyone just keeps looking at this as Player vs Player in terms. But Roberts is more important to Baltimore then he would be for the Cubs.

Fans need to see them keeping the home grown guys. The fans need a reason to pay to see the games. Would Roberts add any butts in the seats in Chicago? Not likely. But in Baltimore he is a fan favorite.

O's need the good press of signing Nick and Brian to deals. They weren't going to get fans excited by trading for Hill, Pie and Freel. And Wigginton is no Teixeira.

I honestly feel like we will have to wait untill next year to really see if the Roberts deal was good or not . The money is a bit over the top, but remember they will shed huff, mora, walker and a few other albatross contracts. This could possibly leave room for them to go out and spend money and acquire additional pieces to go along with the young pitching staff(tillman, matusz, arrieta, etc.)

If this happens ( remember McPhail tends to be conservative), then i have no problem with his contract, even though he may be only average by the end of it.

But the argument the other way that it's bad to sign a guy in his early 30's to an extension that will end in his mid 30's, because he MIGHT decline more than the perceived value of his position is more valid?

"The fans need a reason to pay to see the games."

I am kind of hoping the reasons stay few. I like that I can get front row in the eutaw reserve seats for 15 bucks...looking forward to the seattle series now!

PeterScamgelos,
I understand your albatross comment for Walker and Mora, but I hope you are not putting Huff in that category. 8M (24 overall) is not a lot for his production. I would like to have him for a couple more years at 8M.

Keith Law is either pissed about something or he's just sick of all of baseball.

He did a horrible interview yesterday about the Braves prospects, and then today he's still upset at something by criticizing this deal.

I think I'm done reading his articles, after this one I just don't see any value in his opinions anymore.

Kenny was no help to Atlanta anyway so do worry about a has been.he sucked in Cincy and with the White Sox's so really,he did Atlanta a favor, anybody will be better than a washed up Ken Griffy Jr,so go play ball with a team that has no chance of even wining the Division much-less a series,GOOD LUCK KEN AND GOOD-BYE "LOSER"

"the argument that the Orioles needed to sign Roberts because they don't have a clear successor at second base," is only part of the argument to Schmuck liking the extension, but it is a good reason. Why get rid of a stud second baseman? And, as Schmuck points out, why get rid of such an important piece to the organization.

I hear a lot of people comparing Roberts to Hudson, saying that they are the same player. Well, they're not the same player. Their averages, their HR's, their OBP, yeah they are the same, but look at what B-Rob does on and off the field. He has more stolen bases, he is a clubhouse leader and important to the fan base and the community. I don't hear anything like that about Orlando Hudson.

I agree with XD23, Roberts does fill seats, and the Orioles can't afford to lose anyone in attendance.

Understood r35barker.

Now that roberts is off the market, does Hudson become the main focus of trams needing Middle infield help?

Still cannot believe he isn't signed.

Let me get this straight, Griffey chose Seattle over Atlanta besure to insure
his legacy. We are talking about the best MLB player in the 90's and a first ballot HOF. What legacy is he trying to insure? Oh I get it he is also very fond of the Seattle fans.

Two weeks ago it was reported he would probably sign with Seattle for $ 500,000 to
$1,000,000. Last week it was reported by his agent he was close to signing with Seattle. Last Friday he denied the rumor and over the weekend he called the braves stating he really wanted to play for them. He stayed in touch with Chipper Jones stating how close he was to signing.

He then has a change of heart and wants to play for Seattle after all. Give me a break,
he wanted more MONEY. Seattle was low balling him
before Atlanta got into the bidding and now he is getting $ 2,000,000 plus a chance to earn twice that much.

He has the same legacy as most of the players and that is greed. If not greed then why not sign with Seattle last week when it was reported he was close to doing so. Where was his fondness for the fans in Seattle? He is fond alright, fond of MONEY.

I was hoping he was different
but he has shown his true colors. Okay Seattle you have your boy, let's see how much he improves your team.
Remember when the June draft rolls around and you are unable to sign that first round draft player because of insufficient funds, you can thank your boy for that.

Cardfan,

What is greed? Would you suddenly agree to work for half of what your employer pays you? Would anyone you know do that?

Probably not. So if everyone is greedy, doesn't the word become meaningless and fail to really explain anything?
