« Odds and Ends: Dunn, Schumaker, Abreu | Main | McLouth Feels Agreement Is Possible »
Scott Lauber of The News Journal spoke to Phillies pitcher Adam Eaton, who is "without question, the elephant in the clubhouse." Eaton is owed $9MM, and the Phillies don't see him as a contender for a rotation spot given his 6.10 ERA with the team.
Eaton says he's not going to accept another assignment to the minors. The Phillies may have to release him and eat his salary.

Yeah. No way Eaton should be sent down to the minors, he's proven he deserves a major league job. This guy is a beast.

Haha scribbletone i hope you arent serious!

I hope he has to pitch every 5 days. For the Braves sake.
Posted by: AtlantaBred | February 13, 2009 at 01:05 PM
Guys much better then him are taking minor league contracts and he is bitching?
Posted by: XD23 | February 13, 2009 at 01:06 PM
AtlantaBred, get real. This guy isn't even going to get a chance to be on the Phillies major league roster.
Posted by: Brando | February 13, 2009 at 01:09 PM
Eaton said he's "not going to accept another assignment to the minors"
See this is yet another thing that's wrong with the game when scrubs like this can dicate whether or not they can be sent to the minors. Hope you enjoy life on the unemployment line, Adam, and be sure to invest that $9 mil wisely because it's the last money you'll ever get from a major league team.
Maybe he can join Kenny Lofton & Joe Beimel at their pity party.
Posted by: Pinky29 | February 13, 2009 at 01:12 PM
the team he should ever pitch against is the mets. this guy robbed the phils blind and than has the gaul to say hes not going to accept an assignment. does he think hes going to get picked up?
Posted by: derman1984 | February 13, 2009 at 01:15 PM
"He gone"!
Posted by: Tomahawk368 | February 13, 2009 at 01:20 PM
I think the sentiment was that it would be good news for the rest of the NL East if Eaton pitched any meaningful innings for the Phillies. Can't say I disagree with that ;)
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | February 13, 2009 at 01:21 PM
I don't see what they can do other than release him. He is terrible.
Posted by: mford | February 13, 2009 at 01:21 PM
Says "Hawk", that is.
Posted by: Tomahawk368 | February 13, 2009 at 01:22 PM
It was quite clear he had no place with the Phillies. He was left off the Playoff Roster, and then when we won the World Series, he wasn't even invited to be there at the Parade. If "that's" not a sign of "we don't want you" - I don't know what is...
However... The man signed a contract to play.. 9 MILLION!
Whether that's in the Majors, Minors, or throwing batting practice... If he doesn't play, she shouldn't get paid!
I'd sue him for refusing to play.
Posted by: FyreKnight | February 13, 2009 at 01:30 PM
"See this is yet another thing that's wrong with the game when scrubs like this can dicate whether or not they can be sent to the minors."
He earned that right when the Phillies decided to give him a 3-year contract.

Again... the Phillies signed him to a 3-year deal. He isn't refusing to play. He signed a major league deal, so he's willing to play for the major league team. He's out of option years, like lots of crappy players, so it's up to him whether or not he gets sent down.
Blame the Phillies for giving him 3 years, not him for refusing a demotion.
Posted by: stellar | February 13, 2009 at 01:33 PM
The Phillies will eat Easton's contract.

Posted by: Dr TL | February 13, 2009 at 01:40 PM
Seriously, why should Eaton accept an assignment to the minors with the Phillies when its unlikely he'll get a shot in the rotation no matter how good he looks? He has the right to refuse the assignment, get his money, and then look for another team where he has a better shot at earning a starting spot. That's part of what he gets in return for already toiling in the minors and playing through his initial 6 years under team control. Those of you hating on him for this are just being ridiculous.

hard to tell if you are being sarcastic but i sure as heck hope you are
Posted by: Aaron | February 13, 2009 at 01:43 PM
The Phillies are not the first team to make the mistake of offering Eaton a job, but hopefully they will be the last.
Posted by: Pinky29 | February 13, 2009 at 01:51 PM
Why exactly did the Phillies give this guy a 3 year, $24 mil contract in the first place?
It's easy to make fun of Eaton... he obviously is not a very good pitcher. But the guy had only been even "league average" in his rookie year in 2000, and was coming off a season in which he pitched 65 innings with a 5.12 era. The one being skewered should be the Phils' GM at the time (Gillick? I don't know).
Posted by: AtlantaMike | February 13, 2009 at 01:52 PM
It was Gillick.
Posted by: Tomahawk368 | February 13, 2009 at 01:56 PM
His deal was the product of the inflated market that offseason. Middle-of-the-road types were getting gigantic deals because they were so in demand. (Gil Meche, Ted Lilly, Adam Eaton, Jason Marquis)
Some, like Lilly (4/$40MM) and Meche (5/$55MM), look to have been good or at least solid signings.
Unfortunately for the Phils, Eaton gave them zero return on their investment.
Posted by: CubFanForLife | February 13, 2009 at 02:00 PM
I think Eaton has realized he's not going to get a shot in the bigs any longer, and he's trying to get as much money as possible out of the Phils then accept a minor-league deal with someone else.
I can understand why he's doing it, but to come out and SAY other teams shouldn't trade for you because you're going to be a FA soon is seriously underhanded and a sad thing to do.
Yeah he probably hates the Phils and that's why he did it, but they still paid you freaking $16m over the last two seasons to SUCK. He should have at least a modicum of honor.
Posted by: Muggi | February 13, 2009 at 02:07 PM
MLB should allow people to sign 10-day contracts like the NBA so Eaton can get employed 3-4 times a year.
Posted by: AtlantaBred | February 13, 2009 at 02:08 PM
Meche and Lilly aren't middle of the road pitchers.
Both have totally lived up to their contracts, and are very good mid-rotation pitchers.
And yes, I was being very sarcastic.

Second! Players like Eaton dont deserve more than 10 seconds.
Posted by: Tomahawk368 | February 13, 2009 at 02:10 PM
Maybe the Phillies can send him to the White Sox as a thank you present for Freddy Garcia. At this point, I'd be happy to see the Phillies eat his salary; even if we just got a bucket of balls in return, it'd be worth it to have Ozzie Guillen ridicule Eaton in the press until he retires.
Eaton ranks right alongside Danny Tartabull as one of the most disastrous signings in Philly history.
Posted by: Mac Tonight | February 13, 2009 at 02:13 PM
Meche was good in '07, Lilly was outstanding on some days in '08. That said, yeah, they are very overpaid.(no sarcasm)
But you kind of have to look at thier respective F.A markets. If we opened an entire blog about overpaid pitchers, it would be full in about 15 seconds.

Yeah, have to admit, I was hoping the Braves would sign Carlos Silva last offseason :)
Posted by: AtlantaMike | February 13, 2009 at 02:17 PM
Hmm... I wonder if the Phils are going to pick up his $9 million '10 option..
Posted by: GoTribe | February 13, 2009 at 02:22 PM
And with that statement, Adam Eaton effectively ended his MLB career.

I bet the yankees would take him!
Posted by: Justin | February 13, 2009 at 02:29 PM
Hard to believe that a few years ago, Texas traded Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez for Aki Otsuka, Termel Sledge and Adam Eaton. That's gotta go down as one of the worst trades of all time. It took a few years, but I think people finally figured out that guys like Eaton only put up good number in those early years because of Petco. Take him out of that cavern and he's awful.
Meanwhile, it's a crime that he earns 9 million dollars next season, no matter what.

It makes me mad that we are even talking about this dude. he should even be being posted on this website.

Yeah, I still can't believe what JD gave the Pads for this idjit.
Posted by: MadmanTX | February 13, 2009 at 03:05 PM
It is a mistake for Adam Eaton not to accept an assignment to the minors. At least he can try and get his stuff together. Two years ago Cliff Lee was left off the postseason roster after a terrible year and came back to win the Cy.
I'm not saying Eaton has quite that capability, but at least with a contract he has that shot.
Posted by: Phightins | February 13, 2009 at 03:20 PM
He signed a contract with the Phillies. That means he should abide by the contract he signed. If he can't get hitters out then he should go somewhere where he can get hitters out.
Little league.
Posted by: XD23 | February 13, 2009 at 03:29 PM
Scribble-
I agree completely, what I meant was that, at the time, they were middle of the road types. Both have stepped up very nicely in Chicago and KC, respectively. You could make a case that Lilly is the Cubs MVP over the last 2 years. Outside of his horrendous April 2008, he's been phenomenal and worth every penny.

Why would he accept an assignment to the minors when he doesnt have to? The phillies agreed to the same terms that eaton agreed to. Make them eat the contract and try to cling on to a staff somewhere.

If they're gonna have to pay him, they might as well keep him in the bullpen. He's gotta have something right? Why else would anyone have given him $9 mil? Might as well make him do something. He can pitch out of the bullpen & have a seat facing the wall, with useful teammates taping jokes & coupons to his back. That way he can be at least useful for a genuine laugh instead of just a grimace.
Posted by: drphonic7 | February 13, 2009 at 04:27 PM
marismetsfan: There's a difference between expecting the Phils to honor the contract and telling a reporter, "No one should trade for me, because I'm going to be a free agent soon."
Posted by: Muggi | February 13, 2009 at 04:36 PM
Crap, this probably means John Mozeliak is slipping in his own drool now and can't wait to give Duncan another project.

Eaton has already earned over $25 million in his career. As long as he is not stupid, he and his children will be set for life even if he never gets another MLB job
"Maybe he can join Kenny Lofton & Joe Beimel at their pity party."
Hey, Lofton had the same position as a guy like Shawn Green did when he retired. Lofton has absolutely no need to sign a cheap deal to keep playing, so why not hold out for what the guy was actually worth anyway?
As for Beimel, how is it a pity party? The guy is a proven lefty reliever who absolutely dominated one of the greatest hitters of all time and can't get a deal because of the poor market. I would complain if I were him as well.

Can they do something similar to what the dodgers did with Andruw Jones?? How much did LA have to eat there, does anyone know?
I do feel bad for this situation but cmon you are reigning champs with loads of talent coming back, how bad can it be!?

Dodgers eat 5 million per for the next 3 years

Ugh. No. It is freedom of contract.
"Can they do something similar to what the dodgers did with Andruw Jones??"
If they wanted to, I am sure they could work out some sort of deal. I am betting that Eaton would want interest on his money to defer.
