« Offseason In Review: San Francisco Giants | Main | Rays Ink 17 Pre-Arb Players »
According to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, the Rangers signed all nine of their pre-arbitration players Wednesday.
Josh Hamilton, who will become eligible for arbitration after the 2009 season, is the most notable name on the list. He inked a one-year deal worth $555K. The club is still expected to explore a long-term deal with the 27-year-old slugger later this spring.

Good for them. The former number one pick has finally shown what he can do, and he'd be a good foundation for a team.

The greedy little dude inside of me is disappointed with Hamilton. Signing for 500k was being extremely courteous to the Rangers. Taking into consideration the economics of baseball in the early 2000's and through to nowadays, I would say they could sign him for as low as 5 million a year and as a high as 18 million a year, depending on a bunch of factors.
My overall guesstimate: 6 years/$63 million averaging $6 mil per in the first half and $15 mil per in the second half.
That would be a roughly $25.2 million pay out after taxes.

Hamilton doesn't really have a choice. Players are guaranteed nothing more than the league min for their first three years. Next year he will be arb eligible and see a big payday.

Which is why I think the Rangers are looking to sign him to a long-term contract now. Maybe buy off his arb years. It'll give him security and maybe allow them to pay less than market value for him.

I know the team has him under prime control and can basically sign him for what they want, but wow, getting a guy like Hamilton at well under 1 million for next season!? That's awesome.
They should definitely push for the long term deal though. Anybody think he would sign a 5-year/$50 million deal?
