Rangers To Watch Chad Cordero

Anthony Andro of the Dallas Morning News talked to Rangers GM Jon Daniels, who said the team will be represented at Chad Cordero's audition this week.

Other teams rumored to have interest at various points: the Royals, Brewers, Marlins, Dodgers, Twins, Angels, Mets, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Nationals, and Tigers.  We know the Mets will probably pass.

Interesting, I thought that Cordero had already had a throwing session in December for teams..

Texas would be a good choice if he wants to close, but a poor choice if he wants to win. I still think NY Yankees, Angels as setup and Brewers and Tigers as closer would be best places.

The Brewers already brought in Hoffman to close, the Tigers already brought in Lyon to close, and the Angels already have Arredondo as their set up man.

I think Texas, Minnesota, Detroit, Los Angeles, Arizona and St. Louis are the best fits for him.

The Tigers should give him a shot. If they can get him, the bullpen could look decent as long as Rodney, Zumaya, and Lyon return to form.

Forgot about Hoffman, but Lyon is a groundball pitcher and not many Todd Jones/Borkowski types excell in that role. Cordero would be a massive upgrade.

The Rangers only above average pitcher is their closer, Frankie Francisco.

If Cordero has his velocity back would be a good 8th inning guy.

ya, having some support in an experienced closer or two seems like a good idea if you're going to try and ride Frankie. The guy has great stuff, but the track record just isn't there to support him saving games.

Lyon isn't a groundball pitcher..

His career GB/FB is 1.16, so he clearly isn't a groundball pitcher. He doesn't throw a sinker either, so I simply don't get where you got that label from.

Lyon is a solid reliever that doesn't walk many guys, and he was really unlucky in 2008. Batters had a .355 BABIP against him, and his HR rate more than quadrupled (although 2007 was likely a fluke).

I think Lyon can be a decent closer, and he's shown he's capable of that.

I still think Cordero could be a good fit there, but he doesn't move Lyon out of the closer spot without Lyon giving it away first.

Kinsler...
I don't understand how you can say Francisco is the only above average pitcher. Padilla made a legitimate run at the All star game. Scott Feldman could possibly be classified as slightly above average (choosing my words carefully there). CJ is easily above average when healthy. And the younger prospects who I pray can come into their own and up to the bigs this year (Feliz and Holland).

I agree, Padilla is never given any credit, and most people in TX act like he needs to be dumped if there's any opportunity. We'd be in even bigger trouble if he wasn't here.
