According to Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, the Reds signed Jacque Jones and Daryle Ward to minor league deals today.
Jones, 34 in April, hit .147/.239/.207 in 134 plate appearances for the Tigers and Marlins last year. Jones played winter ball and had laser eye surgery this winter. Troy Renck says he'll get $600K and an April out clause.
Ward, 33, hit .216/.319/.402 in 119 plate appearances for the Cubs last year. He missed time with a herniated disc.

What happened to Jacque Jones? He was pathetic last season.

Does Dusty want any other former Cubs? His favorite player Neifi Perez is still out there, I believe.
Posted by: Dan | February 05, 2009 at 02:35 PM
This is the funniest thing that i've heard this off season. Jones sucks and Ward is too old, fat, and injury prone to play

we might lose 120 games

"might"???
Posted by: RoyHobbs | February 05, 2009 at 03:08 PM
Jerry Hairston at short, too. Weathers = closer? If I were a Reds fan I'd be pissed at all this.
Posted by: Cubs World Champs please B4 I die | February 05, 2009 at 03:14 PM
I thought Hal Mcrae wrote the article
That would be funny
Posted by: ARyan | February 05, 2009 at 03:18 PM
cubs world champs yadayada, Hairston is in the mix for a platoon job in left field and shortstop(Alex Gonzalez has been said to 100% so he is the starter). Weathers isn't the closer(Francisco Cordero is) and he might not even be the setup man. I doubt Jones makes the team but Ward might as a back up/pinch hitter. Basically he can replace Javier Valentin.

Good ol' Dusty is trying to re-create his Cubs teams one mediocre player at a time...
Posted by: jonred | February 05, 2009 at 03:25 PM
For a team with no prospect of competing in the foreseeable future the Reds sure are stacking up on old garbage OF's.
Jacque jones, Jonny Gomes, Willy Taveres?
why..just..why? I thought it was common sense to see what kind of prospects you have when your team is likely going to lose 90+ games.
Jesus..between their inept GM and Dusty "I'll ruin my SP" Baker this franchise is in serious trouble.
Posted by: Gleb | February 05, 2009 at 03:31 PM
Eeek. This is not good. I wanted the Reds to do something good because I can see thier games in N.C and wanted something interesting to watch when Edinson or Cueto arent on the hill. Now I fear this is going to be another bad season.
Posted by: Tomahawk368 | February 05, 2009 at 03:32 PM
Why didnt the Reds leave ol Dusty on Baseball Tonight?
Posted by: Tomahawk368 | February 05, 2009 at 03:37 PM
These are minor league contracts. Why is everyone freaking out. I don't mind knowing that we have Jones as a back up in Louisville
Posted by: Kyle | February 05, 2009 at 03:37 PM
These posts sounds like a lot of scared little Cubs fans. Why else would they bother to even read this article or post a comment???? They must be paying attention to the Reds.
Posted by: BigRedOne | February 05, 2009 at 03:52 PM
Talk about overreacting! Big deal - they are just signing MINOR LEAGUE contracts to fill out some spots in AAA and MAYBE a bat for the bench. The Reds will not lose 90+ games this year. They won't be great, but they will hover around .500. They have a lot of promising young talent - and a fat, old bench player isn't going to make it all fall apart.
Posted by: DanDriessen | February 05, 2009 at 03:58 PM
Scared of Jones and Ward? Maybe Cueto,Volquez, Bruce, and Phillips, but not ward or Jones
Posted by: bobby p | February 05, 2009 at 04:04 PM
Scared of the Reds, I don't think so. I pay attention to all of baseball, especially teams that are in the NL Central. I posted a comment because these are former Cubs and our former manager is managing the team. The Reds are not scary, 4th place at best.
Posted by: Dan | February 05, 2009 at 04:04 PM
I'm seriously in tears over here over BigRed saying the cubs were worried about the reds hahahahahahaha
If the reds are lucky this season they'll finish with a better record than the pirates!
Posted by: tfsmagCubs | February 05, 2009 at 04:17 PM
Corey Patterson ONLY signed a Minor League contract last year and look where THAT got him....
Posted by: ctownboy | February 05, 2009 at 04:18 PM
Ok, this is coming from a cubs fan who hasn't won a world series in how many years? How is signing two decent guys to the bench on minor league deals stupid? I'm definitely sure you didn't say that when they were doing decent on the cubs. For a smaller market team than the cubs, I'd say we will compete with the cubs.
Posted by: redsfan | February 05, 2009 at 04:21 PM
The Reds are loading up on OFs because they hope one or two have good STs and show that they still have something in the tank. After Bruce and Taveras, they have Gomes, Hairston, Dickerson, Ward, and Jones competing for the last three OF spots. I wouldn't be surprised to see them pick up another fringe OF or two in a couple weeks. Garrett Anderson comes to mind.
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | February 05, 2009 at 04:55 PM
That's ludicrous. Decent? Try "Done." Compete? Are you kidding? I do not wish any ill on the Reds but that is rediculous.
Posted by: Cubs World Champs please B4 I die | February 05, 2009 at 04:57 PM
Wow, overreaction. Are there any Reds fans here?
Our outfield right now is- Bruce, Taveras, Dickerson, Hairston Jr., Hopper then maybe Gomes/Ward/Jones to compete for a bench spot. Get your facts straight.
It's hilarious to see Cubs fans talk trash cuz all you have to do is ask when they last won a championship? Atleast the Reds won in 90.
If I was a Cubs fan, I would be worried about the awful trades made in hopes for Peavy rather than the Red's minor league system.
Posted by: Noggy | February 05, 2009 at 05:11 PM
Again, they're sure a lot of Cubs fans posting on a Reds page. At least the Reds has a legacy, an identity of greatness '75, '76, '90. The Cubs only identity is a goat and Bartman. Woo hoo!
Posted by: BigRedOne | February 05, 2009 at 05:12 PM
I'll take the Reds identity of the Big Red Machine over the Cubs of the goat and Bartman, any-day-of-the-week.
Posted by: BigRedOne | February 05, 2009 at 05:14 PM
Did you say that last year when you guys signed edmonds? How about Jon Lieber? Oh by the way how about Mike Stanton this year? No I wasn't kidding about the reds competing. The problem with the cubs is that they go to the playoffs and then lose. Don't be surprised with the reds this year. Sleeper. I don't think you're getting the gist of the deal, it is minor league deals. You act like it's millions. Easy Paul Bako.
Posted by: redsfan | February 05, 2009 at 05:16 PM
"Ok, this is coming from a cubs fan who hasn't won a world series in how many years? "
He's a fans, how the heck are fans suppose win the World Series?
And if you are implying the ol 100, I doubt he has been alive that long.
Good luck with 2009..
Posted by: Canterbury | February 05, 2009 at 05:20 PM
The Reds legacy:
1975
1976
1990
The Cubs:
a goat
and a Bartman
BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHA. LMAO!
Posted by: BigRedOne | February 05, 2009 at 05:23 PM
"He's a fans, how the heck are fans suppose win the World Series?"
You obviously knew what I was talking about. We aren't 5 here. If this is such a big deal to cub fans that we signed Jones and Ward to MINOR LEAGUE deals, how are they explaining the signings of Mike Stanton and Paul Bako? I mean seriously. I think I'd rather take Ward and Jones. That's the problem with cubs fans. They are so arrogant, yet they haven't won a world series in over 100 years. How can you talk trash? I take that back, not all cubs fans (Tim).
Posted by: redsfan | February 05, 2009 at 05:27 PM
Cubs fans get awfully defensive. Must be the lack of playoff success in recent years...or ever. But hey Reds haven't done anything lately either. It's really a moot point. Can't we just let the year play out? Pitchers and catchers haven't even reported yet.
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | February 05, 2009 at 05:31 PM
Can we leave the my team has done this or that out?
Either way Daryl Ward never played for Dusty. He did play with the Cubs but not for Dusty.
Gleb, the Reds aren't in trouble. They probably aren't contending this year but most of their prospects are 1-2 years away. I don't understand why you believe the Reds will lose 90+ games this upcoming season since they haven't lost more than 90 since '03 and lost just 90 during '07. The offense will be god awful but the pitching is shaping up to look superb.
I never realized depth was a bad thing.
Oh and Grizzlyfox, don't forget Hopper is going to compete for an outfield spot along with the extreme longshot Drew Stubbs.
Everyone else, I'm a Reds fan and there is no reason to be doing all this taunting about WS rings. That's the past.
Posted by: BankStreetGrounds | February 05, 2009 at 05:38 PM
And why is this linked to Dusty Baker? Jones played one year under Baker in 06 when he hit .285 with 27 HRs. Daryle Ward has never been managed by Dusty Baker. So no, this is no Corey Patterson situation whatsoever.
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | February 05, 2009 at 05:40 PM
Yeah forgot about Hopper, although I think it's a safe bet to say if he doesn't look decent during ST he's going to be in Louisville.
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | February 05, 2009 at 05:41 PM
You know one comparison between Cubs fans and Reds fans? They BOTH like to lose.
Think about it...both teams' fans gripe and complain about every move made EVERY SINGLE FRICKIN' YEAR! The teams' fans dig the drama...they like pathetic teams, because it gives them something to gripe about!
Here we are...complaining about MINOR LEAGUE DEALS to bench players. We're talking...oh...what...$500,000 maximum/each? League average salary is near $3.5/million. Get your facts straight before complaining. There's nothing to complain about here.
What outfielders do I see making the team?
Taveras
Dickerson
Gomes
Jones
Bruce
And no...Taveras doesn't suck. He's still decently young, has unbelievable speed, and will return back to '07 form in GABP.
Gomes and Jones will have a good Spring Training. Jones just had laser eye surgery in the winter and Gomes is still young and has all the potential in the world with great power.
Just watch. Don't count the Reds out. They'll be a sleeper this year.

EVEN MORE MEDICORE HITTERS THAT WILL DO WELL IN THAT SANDBOX OF A FIELD THEY CALL THE GREAT AMERICAN BALLPARK!

“Why didnt the Reds leave ol Dusty on Baseball Tonight?”
We call that ‘taking one for the team’. The ‘Team’ in this case being everyone that ever watches Baseball Tonight. Now if some team would just be kind enough to hire Steve Phillips, we will be set :)
As far as the move itself - as the intelligent posters pointed out, who cares? Its not like either will see real playing time, and having a AAA filler isn’t going to hurt your chances on the season. This is only a problem if the Reds see 3-4 injuries in the outfield and are forced to use them. But even then, 3-4 injuries in the OF means there is no reason to watch anyway, so what would it matter if they were using Jones or Ward at that point?

we have a whole fist

@Ctownboy: "Corey Patterson ONLY signed a Minor League contract last year and look where THAT got him...."
Patterson signed a major league deal worth 3M. He was demoted when Jay Bruce came up only after he agreed to be sent down rather than be DFA'd.

Ahh man, I remember Daryle Ward hitting all those pinch hit homers for the Nats back in the day...

Steve Phillips is the man

Ronnie,
Get your facts straight.
Reds Sign Corey Patterson
By Tim Dierkes [March 3, 2008 at 7:35pm CST]
According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds have signed 28 year-old center fielder Corey Patterson to a minor league deal. Patterson, a Boras client, makes for a surprising bargain with a dash of upside. He happened to reach free agency in an offseason with a center field surplus. He's reunited with former Cubs manager Dusty Baker, who some say mishandled Patterson at times. Fay believes this takes Kenny Lofton off the table for Cincy.
The Reds are calling it a center field competition, but Patterson will probably get the gig. This will allow the Reds to keep Jay Bruce in the minors until June and delay his future free agency by a year.
The Reds also inked another former Cub, Jerry Hairston Jr. He may have a hard time making the team, but his versatility could help.
Posted by: ctownboy | February 05, 2009 at 10:20 PM
Jones doesn't need laser surgery in his eyes, he needs BIONIC EYES surgery to make contact to the ball
Posted by: DominicanCUB08 | February 05, 2009 at 10:37 PM
ctown, what is your point? JHJ didn't make the club, he smoked triple A pitchers got called up and played his best although short season of his career. Dusty has already all but said they will be giving Dickerson all the chance in the world to stick it out in left either on his own or in a platoon(most likely situation). My guess is unless Dickerson absolutely sucks in spring training he'll be a starter...at least against right handed pitchers.
Posted by: BankStreetGrounds | February 06, 2009 at 02:06 AM
Yes the Cubs havent had the sucess of th Reds and the Reds fans bring up the 70s etc. But dont forget the Reds also have had Marge Schott one of the worst owners ever and dont u think Pete Rose ever managed a game to help his gambling???.
Posted by: ryno23 | February 06, 2009 at 08:11 AM
My point had nothing to do with JHJ but Corey Patterson.
People keep saying that the signings of guys like Gomes, Nix, Jones and Ward are "no big deal" because they are only signed to Minor League contracts.
I was pointing out that Patterson was "only signed" to a Minor League contract and Toothpick Baker found a way to not only get him on the team but have him be the starting Center Fielder and lead off hitter.
With the addition of these veterans, I AM worried that one (or more) of them will make the team and thus send Dickerson and Hopper to the Minors. Then, the Reds will again have NO CLUE if either of them can do well over a full season and the team will be in this same position NEXT YEAR, i.e. not knowing whether either are good enough to be able to play for a full season and whether they should be retained or need to be shipped out.
Since 2009 is going to be a losing season anyway, I have said all along that these two SHOULD be given a chance to play full time and guys like Willy T and the others should NOT have been signed and THAT money spent on ONE good hitter like Abreu.
Having an Outfield of Abreu, Dickerson/Hopper and Bruce would NOT have been the worst thing in the world.
Posted by: ctownboy | February 06, 2009 at 09:28 AM
The Reds legacy is actually beat by only the Yanks. Series titles in 1919,40,75,76,90. Lost to Yanks in 39 & 61 NL champs in 70, 72. First Pro team, only undefeated season. And don't forget the Red Sox (AKA Cincy Red Stockings who left for Boston) titles in 12,15,16. I'd say we have a peice of those... Add to that the best record in baseball in the screwed up strike season of 81. Also, USA today played out the strike year of 94 w/ Reds beating Yanks. We are on our way back to supremecy...you should have won while we were down and you had a chance sad, sad Cubs.
Posted by: CharlieHustle4prez | February 06, 2009 at 10:00 AM
Ha haa. Cubs bring up Marge Schott and Pete Rose. You have to resort to an owner as though she had something bad to do with our legacy? At LEAST, she was baseball's first female owner and she won a world championship in 1990. Next, Pete Rose, only the best Hall of Fame player not in the hall of fame, won championships in '75, '76, '80. Is looked upon by two generations of players and fans as the standard bearer of heart and hustle on a baseball field. Gambling on your team to win is GREATLY different than gambling on your team to lose.
Posted by: BigRedOne | February 06, 2009 at 11:29 AM
I Tivo'd Joey Votto's three home run game against the Cubs last season. It was SWEET. Marty Brennament was right, the Cubs are the worst fans in baseball and they proved it in that game. I am looking forward for Votto to hit four homers against the Cubs this year. Too bad, CharlieHustle was right, Cubs had their window of opportunity last year and it closed. When Piniella retires, he'll still only have one ring from managing, and it says 1990 World Champion Cincinnati Reds.
Posted by: BigRedOne | February 06, 2009 at 11:44 AM
I see the Hostility between the Reds and Cubs are still at its finest..lol...All Im asking from both sides of this article to cool the bashing about whos better than who and all this stuff about Championships...I could careless that my Cubs havent won a Ring in 101 yrs.....Ive only been alive for 23 of them..Instead of bashing each other, focus on the completions of both Cubs...The way my Cubs have been playing to some extent is unacceptable but they arent the only team....But to be the only 2nd team in baseball to post 2,000 wins is a good feat....Just like the Reds had the Red Machine Years...Good Luck to both teams...As long as we both finish above the Pirates and Cards thats all Im worried about...All Championships do is tend to make people become obnoxious and cocky for something they themselves havent won...
Posted by: Chi_Cubs_85 | February 06, 2009 at 03:53 PM
I am a Cubs fan, and even though I am not worried about the Reds, I do think that these are good signings. Ward will be sure to add a couple of clutch hits off the bench, and Jones is a low risk possible high reward player, similar to Jim Edmonds last year. You give him a league minimum type contract, have him come in, if he is even half the player he is capable of you got a decent outfielder that can contribute from the left side.
Doesn't hurt to have a couple of seasoned vet's laying around either. . . Too bad the manager typically just lays around to. . .
Posted by: rljmb23 | February 07, 2009 at 05:25 PM
The Reds and Dusty Baker are a joke. They cut salary and replace it with scrap. Griffey had to go because he was in the way of developement. They could have kept Dunn and still have a team built primarily for speed and defense. You need a strong middle to win championships.
Posted by: quentincollins | February 08, 2009 at 12:37 PM
Jacque will have a breakout season. The eye surgery was exactly what he needed. He had PRK done on his eyes. That will help him tremendously
