THURSDAY, 10:06am: Despite O'Dowd's comments, Renck says Beimel remains interested in joining the Rockies. However, Beimel doesn't think much of the Rockies' offer.
WEDNESDAY, 7:47pm: According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies are no longer pursuing free agent left-hander Joe Beimel.
"We maintained contact with his agent, and our desire was there, but I believe he’s going in a different direction so there’s no reason to keep calling," said GM Dan O'Dowd. Beimel has drawn interest recently from the Diamondbacks, Tigers and Phillies.
O'Dowd also told Renck that the club has not reopened talks with free agent starter Braden Looper. He has recieved interest from the Orioles, but would reportedly prefer to stay in the National League.

Were they ever in on them to begin with, just asking.

BuccoNation - why does Looper make sense for the Pirates? Warm body to hold down the fort? Setting up for a midseason trade? Hoping he pitches well enough to have type B status at the end of '09?

Translation: Beimel still wants too many years and/or too many dollars. I wonder if he's asking for an Affeldt-type deal, which would be reasonable, even if the market has suppressed since his signing.

Chris,
Tradewise you never know, he might be that B level guy we can throw in with a Jack or a Freddie for a nice package, without having to throw in one of our young pitchers, that all depends on where we're at at the Break, and where his numbers would be at at the Break, obviously...
But where I see him really making sense for us... he'd be a solid middle of the rotation guy, but more importantly, he'd be another body competing for a spot in the rotation, so even if he had a bad Spring and didn't get a spot off the bat, he'd push the younger guys... I think we have something like 4-6 guys competing for 2 slots.
His K/BB (108/45) ratio was nice last year in St. Louie, and it felt like every guy in our rotation walked more than he struck out. Last year our pitching was suppposed be our strongpoint, but we were HORRIBLE.
With all that said, I just see him fitting in, especially because we'll get a little discount with this years market.
