« Padres Closing In On Deal With Walter Silva | Main | Indians Acquire Salas, Designate Marte »
According to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star, the Royals claimed infielder Tug Hulett off waivers from the Mariners. To make room, they designated lefty Neal Musser for assignment.
Hulett, 26 in a few days, hit .298/.380/.518 in Triple A last year and can play any infield position.

So, first they sign Wee Willie, and now they claim the guy that was pushing him in Seattle? Nice! At least Tulett can hit... and seems to make Callaspo, Pena Jr. and even Ross Gload (although he's guaranteed) and maybe Teahen more expendable.

THEY WILL RE SIGN HIM AND PUT HIM IN AAA

Well, getting Hulett is almost as good as Hudson.
Right?
RIGHT?!?!

Nice pickup.

Um...why? Apparently Dayton's need for "depth" includes depth at the Utility IF position.
Posted by: Doc10Royals | February 19, 2009 at 02:35 PM
His Minor league #'s show promise, but there must be a reason why Seattle felt him expendable. Be curious what this kid does in ST.
Posted by: HumanToilet | February 19, 2009 at 02:38 PM
otis,
could this be to add depth at IF, to open up a trade to dump teahen and open up for o-huds? o.O

Wow, no wonder the M's suck. This Hulett guy does a little of everything and really seems to be a 6 tool guy (6th tool being patience). I can't believe they got rid of him.

Boy those Royals love them Mariners. Meche, HoRam, Guillen, Olivo, WFB, now Hulett.

"Um...why? Apparently Dayton's need for "depth" includes depth at the Utility IF position."
How does it hurt to have depth there?

Soria - I like your thinkin', but it would take more than Teahen, I think. I'm all for biting the bullet and cutting Buck too - give Pena a real crack at the backup job - he's hit enough to earn it in the minors. JR is there too... If Tug makes the roster, than that means two of the bunch I spoke of (TPJ, Callaspo, German, Teahen) are expendable. Cross your fingers!

He's no Ron Tugnutt!

Hulett's bat, if it translates to MLB, plays at any of the skilled IF positions. He is also a lefty at the plate, which is always nice.

Always liked Tug. I remember hearing one spring training that the coach asked him what position he plays...and Tug responded "Any position you want me to." That's a good attitude. I wish him well.

Soria I was actually thinking the same thing. I tried to log in earlier and say: "Well DM, there's your backup 3B. Move Teahen now!"
It would take more than Teahen to make payroll room...but maybe, just maybe, if they unloaded him and one other they could go to Glass and ask for 'just a couple more million!'
Seriously...the way the FA market is right now...a team could get a lot better pretty fast without paying a premium.

I echo everything Rangerfan said above. Tug is a class act and a talented athlete. I actually miss him in the Rangers system. I'm glad he'll have a home. I may even try to go watch him as a Royal.

"Wow, no wonder the M's suck. This Hulett guy does a little of everything and really seems to be a 6 tool guy (6th tool being patience). I can't believe they got rid of him."
Hmmm, if we only had a piece of software called vBulletin, like many online forums do. I could then edit that quote to read:
"Wow, no wonder the Royals suck. This Hulett guy does very little of anything and really seems to be a 1 tool guy (1st and only tool being hustle/scrapiness/grit). I can't believe they signed Willie Bloomquist to a 2-year contract, and yet still have Alberto Callaspo, Estaban German, and now Tug Hulett. And what's up with that Jose Guillen signing? They'll never be able to get rid of him!"
Heh. ;)

otis I sure hope thats what hes thinking.
teahen wouldnt be enough, but what if we unloaded buck (basically a third stringer soon) and tpj (can we live without his .167 BA?!)
Posted by: SoriaTheMexicutioner | February 19, 2009 at 05:20 PM
I wish people would stop bashing Guillen when he led the team in rbi's (97), homeruns (20), and doubles (42) last year and this was playing injured most of the year. Before that, Emil Brown was leading the Royals in rbi's in the 70's the past 2 years. People want to boo the man when they had no idea he was playing hurt with a pulled groin and hamsting issues most of the season. Thats a player who wants to win and wants to earn his money. Not even Sweeney who i love would play hurt. He was the only power we had last yr and you want to degrade this guy, how selfish of you so called Royals fans. So all you Guillen haters need to realize how important he is to the team and stop whining that he's making 13 million this year. Realize that the Royals are going to have to overpay on any player in order for them to want to play in KC. Unbelievable
Posted by: truroyal | February 19, 2009 at 09:07 PM
He's making $12 million not 13 and I'm with you all the way. Guillen is a key to this team and if he puts up his average numbers and plays average defense this team is much much better.
They only point I can't agree with you on is the loving Sweeney part. He collected $11 million a year for 2 years and played 60 games at DH. His contract crippled the Royals for 5 years and he just laughed his way to the bank. What a joke.
Posted by: Otis26 | February 19, 2009 at 09:26 PM
Anyone saying the Mariners are bad for letting him go... there aren't. No offense to Tug, but he doesn't really have a future.. everyday AAA player at best.
Mark my words.. he won't make a difference, even on the crappy Royals.

"Mark my words.. he won't make a difference, even on the crappy Royals."
maybe you havent seen our pitching or starting lineup, hes not the man to make a huge difference.
and i dont know exactly how much of a sheep you are of espn, but the royals are not at all crappy.
the royals have added 19 wins in just four years.
people like swarzakguy ruin baseball talks because they rely on surface information
Posted by: SoriaTheMexicutioner | February 20, 2009 at 05:44 AM
I also like how an apparent Mariners fan calls the Royals crappy. That's funny. :)
Posted by: Michael | February 20, 2009 at 08:37 AM
Well they did just sign Ken Griffey, Jr.
I hear that with his Social Security the deal could top $3 million.
Posted by: Otis26 | February 20, 2009 at 11:25 AM
truroyal, Guillen was horrible last year. Just because he led a bad offense in in the most useless stat imaginable doesn't mean he was worth the money.
In reality, the highest paid player in Royals history was barely the 4th best hitter on one of the worst offenses in Royals history.
