Looking for a lefty reliever? Here are the available free agents:
- Joe Beimel - Beimel is a Type B free agent, but the Dodgers did not offer him arbitration. His walk and strikeout ratios are not great but he's somehow managed to allow only one home run in the past two seasons. Lefties hit .278/.330/.311 against him in '08.
- Randy Flores - Flores was non-tendered by the Cardinals in December. He had surgery in September for a cyst as well as fraying of the labrum. In the Majors in '08 lefties hit .314/.422/.549 against him.
- Tyler Johnson - The youngest of the group, Johnson was also non-tendered by the Cards. He missed the entire '08 season with shoulder problems. He held lefties to a .224/.307/.418 line in 2007.
- Will Ohman - Ohman was traded to the Braves in December of '07 along with Omar Infante. He held lefties to a .200/.257/.314 line. The Braves have had an offer on the table for him since November, and the Phillies recently backed off.
- Dennys Reyes - Reyes is a Type B who was offered arbitration by the Twins. He's bounced around in his career. Lefties hit .202/.250/.287 against him last year and the Dodgers may be interested.
- Ricardo Rincon - He pitched in the Mexican league for most of '08 and hasn't done much in the Majors since '05.
- Ron Villone - Held lefties to a .176/.311/.318 line for the Cardinals in '08.
The Tigers, A's, Phillies, Braves, Dodgers, and Mets are known to be in the market for lefty relief help.
I think the Braves will wind up signing Ohman. Ohman is just searching for a better contract, and I doubt he will find one.

Maybe Rincon picked up some good steroids in Mexico. Most of these guys are worthless but since they pitch with their left arms, they will always find a job with someone. I think Ohman is the best, Villone had a good year but will lose the benefit of having Duncan as a pitching coach if he goes elsewhere.

How about the Trade market for Lefty's? I know a few more chips have to fall from the FA market, but there has to be a few decent Lefty's available this spring. The Giants have 3 with Hinshaw and Affedlt so I have to imagine Taschner is available.

Villone's stats are flawed. Sure he held lefties to a low average, but he walked a lot of them, so they had no chance to hit.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs get in on one of the better lefties left on the market, I don't completely trust Cotts and I'd like to see Marshall in the rotation. No doubt Hendry is thinking Heilman will be the starter though and Marshall will go to the pen.

Blue Jays added LH Brian Burres. Claimed him off waivers from the O's.
I don't get why Toronto keeps adding former O's.

Let's hope the Phillies backed off of Ohman for Sheets...

It prob because JP got accused of adding only ex-athletics so now he's trying to be a little more unpredictable

That is true about Villone....176/.311 is an odd line.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | February 04, 2009 at 04:51 PM
Yeah schilling...I bet the Phillies would back off a need of theirs for a risky "luxury"...
Posted by: here we go | February 04, 2009 at 05:28 PM
They need another starter though (Kendrick is good but he needs to add a new pitch, Happ's a maybe if he improves during the spring, Eaton needs to be released/traded, Carrasco isn't ready). A lefty reliever can be found for cheaper, and a trade is always possible. Why spend 3 million on a guy when you'll only "need" until mid/end of May. J.C. Romero didn't get suspended the whole year, just 50 games.

why was beimel getting all that attention earlier, his line is flat out ugly

Where as those are some valid points, Sheets is going to cost much more (which I just don't think you guys have/are willing to spend). That is just not a move I see you making...or need to make.. Yes you may prefer a better fifth starter, but you aren't going to sign a guy with ace potential.

i think the mets deffinitley need one of these guys

how is Ohman an absolute NEED for the Phils? Romero will be back eventually and Eyre and Happ can fill the void until then. Given the choice of:
A)Ohman/Beimel and Nomar
or
B)Sheets
I'd take Sheets.

A's and Phillies are barely contenders for LHP relief help.
Phillies are only losing Romero for 50 games. Eyre can be decent in a LOOGY role until then.
A's have Blevins as the primary lefty who can get out both sides. They then have guys in AAA who could fill in as a LOOGY if necessary. The A's only need lefty help if Blevins is hurt.
