Why bother with a 32-year old? Especially when he turns out to really be 36.
Posted by: Red | February 19, 2009 at 11:32 AM
Were they the Monterrey Pepper Jacks ?
Posted by: enut | February 19, 2009 at 11:32 AM
Ouch. Yanks are the last team I want to "bid" with.
Posted by: UCSDPadsFan | February 19, 2009 at 11:33 AM
Like the Padres can outbid the Yanks, the same team that wanted to trade Peavy to save money.
It might depend on where Silva might want to play
Posted by: TripleHHH | February 19, 2009 at 11:38 AM
Naa, Monterrey Taquitos Rico.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | February 19, 2009 at 11:42 AM
It's not really bidding when you are talking about the Yankees vs the Padres.
If the Padres land him it will be because the Yankees did not want him.
Posted by: bjsguess | February 19, 2009 at 11:43 AM
Well, it's not like we are talking about Yankees-Red Sox battling for Jose Contrares. Silva is not going to get a big contract or signing bonus - he's purely a depth move for the Yankees...perhaps something more for the Padres. I don't think this will come down to dollars - it will come down to which situation he prefers.

Padres and Yankees in a bidding war. Wonder how that'll turn out...
Posted by: scootie puff jr. | February 19, 2009 at 12:01 PM
if i was him i would pick the Padres. He'll probably never get to pitch in NY. He has a much better chance in San Diego, and theres less pressure.
Posted by: yankfan1 | February 19, 2009 at 12:13 PM
If it's a bidding war then just forget the Padres ...
Posted by: twinsfan | February 19, 2009 at 12:13 PM
On a serious note, for what it's worth this guy had a major pitching duel that Caribbean Series, which was shown on MLB Network. Good low risk-high reward guy for a year; think an older Jose Campillo.

Yankees seem to be hitting below the "blue light special" bin for backup starter plans. 1st Tomko and now looking at Silva, ppl they can get on less than MLB deals and stash at AAA.
Both teams must be concerned still about Mark Mulder, he would have some upside if his surgery rehab is progressing.
Posted by: johns | February 19, 2009 at 12:20 PM
I imagine even the Yankees have a limit as to what they'll pay for a guy who's never pitched in the US before. As for his age, that's sort of irrelevant. They are not looking for a guy who "might" be ready in 3 or 4 years. Aceves started at high A last year and breezed his way thru AA, AAA and pitched 30 innings for the Yanks last year as a starter/reliever. In all he pitched 140 innings. If this guy is as good as Aceves then he can be help to us this year and maybe for a couple of more years.

For once in a long time I feel confident that if someone has an injury that we have capable arms to call up. With a staff consisting of CC, AJ, Wang, Joba and Pettitte @ the mlb level and then Hughes, Kennedy, Aceves, Igawa, Horne, Sanchez, Tomko and possibly Silva if signed that pretty damn good depth. It also allows us to take our time with our other pitching prospects like Brackman, Betances, McAllisterm Garcia, Hermedia, De La ROsa and Bleich.

It can go either way, not like the Yankees are going to the playoffs, he wont get a big deal from anyone he should go for the playtime.
Posted by: Dodgers Suck | February 19, 2009 at 12:50 PM
Sigh....here we go again. And the Yanks won't make it to the playoffs becuz.......you say so?
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | February 19, 2009 at 12:51 PM
Does anyone know anything about this guy? Whats his stuff like?
Posted by: yanks09 | February 19, 2009 at 12:52 PM
"On a serious note, for what it's worth this guy had a major pitching duel that Caribbean Series, which was shown on MLB Network."
Thanks aj7380, I watched that entire series also and couldn't remember if he pitched or not since almost all the games were low scoring anyway..

Here are the stats I found for him in '08:
7-8, 4.21 ERA, 115 IP, 60K/49BB, 1.45 WHIP
According to Baseball America, that is a Mexican AAA team.. I'm a little confused.

haha the title of this article gave me a good laugh.

The Padres are bad for baseball.
Posted by: Thirty5Thirty6 | February 19, 2009 at 02:02 PM
Hey the Padres might get him after all. Guess the Yanks didnt have their heart in it or Silva wants to play for the Pads
Posted by: TripleHHH | February 19, 2009 at 02:02 PM
Pads arent very good.
Posted by: cubs land | February 19, 2009 at 02:08 PM
The Padres are bad for baseball?! Maybe one of the dumbest statements I've heard in a long time. At the end of the day, the Red Soxs or the Rays will beat out the Yankees for the East and you still have the largest payroll in the league.
Posted by: padresfan1988 | February 19, 2009 at 02:13 PM
And Cubs land, hows Peavy look in a Cubs uniform?
Posted by: padresfan1988 | February 19, 2009 at 02:13 PM
"bidding" doesn't have to be strictly about money. The Padres can offer a better opportunity for playing time, nicer climate, a large Latin-American community, etc.
Teams with limited resources need to be looking for this type of player. If this guy works out, everyone will start looking for the next Silva.
Posted by: pnewman | February 19, 2009 at 02:16 PM
Padresfan1988:
Maybe I should have put *SARCASM ALERT* at the of my statement.
Posted by: Thirty5Thirty6 | February 19, 2009 at 02:24 PM
Silva is being bought from his mexican team. He has no say in where he goes. Whoever pays the most will get him.
Posted by: Casanova Wong | February 19, 2009 at 05:17 PM
"in the bidding" not "in a bidding war."
there's a big difference. the difference is, is that in this case the padres will probably win.
Posted by: Green Grove | February 19, 2009 at 11:19 PM
Hey Padresfan1988: Peavy, or no Peavy, the Padres still blow.
Posted by: Pinky29 | February 20, 2009 at 08:49 AM
I think SD will surprise a few people this year. The team is made up of a bunch of players with something to prove, and I think they're going to play hard. Our lineup is better than last year, and the bullpen will be better too.
The biggest question is related to starting pitching. We need two guys to step up. And believe it or not, Cubs fans, but Mark Prior figures to be ready opening day. According to a few friends down in AZ for ST, he's ahead of schedule for rehab, and he's even throwing his curveball pain-free. His fastball is touching 94 mph... He could be a huge X factor. Of course, he may be one pitch away from being injured again, but if he arm holds up, I like our chances rolling out Peavy, Young and Prior in consecutive days.
Posted by: tomfromsd | February 20, 2009 at 08:57 AM
That's or the intelligent input Pinky. I'm surprised you actually spelled Peavy correctly.
How insecure are you about your team's performance that you feel the need to mock the Padres when they're down? I mean, look at Seattle, or Washington. They had a worse record despite a payroll twice as big.
Posted by: tomfromsd | February 20, 2009 at 09:01 AM
That was supposed to read: "Thanks for..."
Typepad sucks.
