According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the A's released catcher Rob Bowen today. They'll go with Landon Powell as Kurt Suzuki's backup. Bowen had been placed on revocable waivers on Friday.
Bowen, 28, hit .176/.219/.286 in 98 plate appearances last year.

I hear the Pacific Coast League has a couple teams in need of a backup catcher.
Looks like he'll be joining Andruw Jones after the Rangers realize he's done :/

He's terrible.

Landon Powell finally looks ready, he might be a sleeper for the upcoming seasons. The everyday job belongs to Suzuki but Powell might be worthy of playing everyday.

I actually think Bowen is a pretty solid backup option. Obviously a down year in 08', but he's solid behind the plate and has some decent power. Not much playing time last season but with some more regular playing time he is very capable of putting up some nice numbers as a bench guy.

Bowen was decent, I don't think he'll ever be starter quality. Now the A's have two good youngsters at catcher. I saw this coming the moment they put him on waivers. We're set on catchers for a while which is nice to know.

Tailgate8, I admit I was basing my comment on what he has shown lately. He might be OK as a backup...w/my Cubs he had only 2 hits in 31 ABs a couple years ago so I had little use for him.
For his career, in 378 ABs, his line is .209/.300/.339.

I actually didn't know what he did with the cubs. I was just happy to get anything back for Kendall. I would've been content with just getting a player like Bowen. But the fact we got Blevins who's been decent for us really made me happy.

I remember about four or five years ago when Landon Powell and Kurt Suzuki played against each other in College World Series. Now they're on the same ML roster. That's pretty cool.

Really? what college did Powell go to?

Bowen has been very consistent...in a bad way. he will definatly get a minor league deal maybe by someone like the marlins or padres

I remember watching some of Landon Powell's minor league games in Stockton and he just looked like a Major Leaguer out there.
its good to see the A's are giving him a shot I think he can be a quality starting cathcher in the Majors

Very young catching with very young pitching (for the most part). It'll be fun to see what kind of season that translates into. I'm excited to see the second home game, and possibly the home opener

Tailgate 8, I know one of them went to Cal State Fullerton (not sure which) and one went to Rice or South Carolina, I'm not sure exactly. All I remember is that they played against each other and both were hitting 3rd for their teams. I believe it was Suzuki that had more RBI's that year (something ridiculous like 80 some in a college season) and Powell was the one with like 20 some homeruns. Again, I'm not 100% sure but I remember them being a big deal in the College World Series and even back then it was clear that they were ML type players. I think that's neat stuff.

Suzuki was the hero for Cal State Fullerton in the 04 CWS. Powell went to South Carolina. Definitely cool that now they are teammates.
