« Offseason In Review: Cincinnati Reds | Main | Hideki Matsui Enters Contract Year »
According to MLB.com's Corey Brock, reliever Chris Britton has been told he won't make the Padres. He's in camp on a minor league deal. Brock says the Padres are talking to Britton's agent about whether he'll head to Triple A or be allowed to talk to other teams. The Padres crave hard-throwing bullpen arms, and Britton fits their previous mold of soft-tossers with good control.

Since his time in Baltimore, Britton has given little reason to believe that he'll ever be as good.
His fastball in Baltimore averaged out at 90.6 MPH, but in 2008 it was down to 87.3 MPH. His raw stuff is clearly worse than it previous was, and his statistics reflect that.
He's gotten smacked around in his time with the Yankees, although his 2008 AAA numbers were good.
The 3.02 FIP and good all around peripherals in AAA definitely leaves some hope that Britton can be a solid middle reliever, but he's never come close to living up to the hopes he created with his performance in 2006.

If you cannot make it as a reliever in our bullpen and divsion, you should lose all hope.

Hah. Yeah NL West pitching is easy mode. If you can't get 3 outs in a row in that division, and one of the hitters isn't named Manny, you probably should accept your fate.

They crave hard throwers?
Astute analysis.

I think Tim was making reference to some recent posts around here based on reports from the San Diego U-T.
You might find it painfully obvious, but apparently it has been lost on the front office for about five years now.
