Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post suggests Freddy Garcia is no longer in the mix for the Mets' fifth starter job, which Livan Hernandez has all but locked up with the demotion of Jon Niese today. Hubbuch says general manager Omar Minaya didn't even mention Garcia when discussing the No. 5 starter job.
Garcia is on a non-roster deal, but Hubbuch told me he said on the first day of camp he's not willing to pitch in the minors. So the situation should come to a head soon.
Hubbuch adds that GM Omar Minaya "once again specifically ruled out signing Pedro Martinez."

Ok.
Livan Hernandez, who blows, is your 5th starter.
Uhh, now its REALLY Pedro time. There is zero reason why a team which could afford to throw 2+MM plus incentives at Redding can't sign Pedro, who actually can *gasp* pitch.

I'm convinced that Pedro will be the Mets 5th starter once he drops his price a bit. Heyman wrote yesterday that the Mets have an offer on the table, so all those denials seems geared towards getting their price, and Livan doing well, which is clearly illusory long term, only helps everything along.

But can he "actually *gasp* pitch? It's hard to tell since the last time I actually saw him do it was 2005, actually.

Livan should be fine as a #5. He has won at least 11 games each of the last 9 years while pitching 180+innings(200 all but last year). That's pretty much all you need out of a #5. Pedro may have a little better upside but I'd rather have a guy who can make 30 starts so there is no reason to see Garcia/Figueroa in a big league uniform.

Tim, I love the site and am a regular, so this is not a shot at you, but how many times are we going to read that the Mets aren't interested in Pedro?

Wonder if Peavy could be enticed to go to the Mets and if they could afford him, both salary wise and in the way of top prospects it would take to acquire him?

Selig must be telling the Mets not to hire Pedro.
If you haven't heard, that's all the rage nowadays -- collusion.

Actually those usernames are not appropriate for the site so I removed them. I don't always accomplish it but my goal is to only allow comments that are OK for children.

The Mets should try Tim Redding. I mean his contract should indicate he's a 3rd starter. There's money that could've been used on Abreu and then traded Ryan Church for starting pitcher. Or if they wanted to, could've used the money on Manny.

Come on.....have u seen pedro in the world baseball classic? flawless....shut out baseball he could still pitch and his fast got to 95 he deserves a 8-9 million contract and mets are just being stupid for not going after pedro....like are the mets serious? freddy garcia couldnt even pitch a perfect inning and pedro pitched scoreless innings against the worlds best hitters!!

NewYorkRedSox,
Wait what the hell? New York Mets?
Anyway, i agree the Mtes would be crazy to not sign Pedro

When all is in doubt ask yourself what Red Sox fans asked themselves in 2004:
W(what) W(would) J(johnny) D(damon) D(do)
He would join the Yankees of course.

Considering Peavy would cost F-Mart and Murphy at least, and taking on his salary, I will take Pedro for 2-3 million plus incentives before trading for Peavy. Especially considering the season Peavy put up last time he pitched in the WBC and the fact that it seems like it is only a matter of time before Jake Peavy's elbow falls off. I don't think Peavy would want to pitch for the Mets anyway.

As for Garcia, he may be done, but he may just be in a similar situation as Pedro last year. He is trying to get back from surgery, and it is his first full season back. His velocity is down and his location is just awful. He could be a value next year for somebody, or he could just be entirely finished. I don't see any success in 2009 for him though.

Nice job this offseason Omar. Livan is our 5? Redding who makes 2.25 mil is on the DL and Freddy Garcia is going to get cut. Not get demoted, but get cut. Looks like even after that talk we'll still see the likes Nelson Figueroa, Brandon Knight, Oil Can Boyd, and Dave Milicki on the bump at Citi this year. Forgive me for being skeptical, I'm a Mets fan.

Braves for NL East, Redding is on DL.
oh, and Braves wont be taking the NL East

bottom line is that pedro will not ba a met and for good reason. you guys just stated that the mets had a bunch of washed up trash going for the 5th spot; why add more trash to the pile? stick with hernandez for the first half of the season and swing a trade that brings in talent for the stretch run. bringing back pedro means that you will see plan f options of the likes of jose lima pitching for the mets in 09.
