« Cubs Can Add Payroll Midseason | Main | Odds & Ends: Pudge, A-Rod, Wilson, Hill »
According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News:
Scouts are buzzing that the Giants are actively looking to upgrade at backup catcher and long relief. One possibility is catcher Rob Bowen, whom the A's released Tuesday.
Baggarly suggests the Giants' trade chips include pitchers Luis Perdomo and Merkin Valdez, as well as outfielder Eugenio Velez.
A handful of catchers remain on the free agent market, including new member Josh Bard. Tracy Ringolsby wonders if the Rockies will renew their interest in Bard. The Marlins, however, don't appear interested according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. The free agent market also features about a dozen relievers.

I read/heard that the Royals have a surplus of catchers with Olivo and Buck and Pena. There is a possible match. The Mets are trying to rid themselves of Ramon Castro I believe. Another possible match. Not exactly sure, but next years' free agent market for a catcher is horrendus, so I'd jump on a trade Now if I was Sabean.
As for reliever Will Ohman and Juan Cruz are still free agents. Cruz requires a draft pick. There's a possible problem. Ohman was great
last year for us. The most reliable arm we had. He won't require a pick. I take him back on the Braves in a hurry.

They need a hitter jeez ! How can the beat LA with Manny, Hudson, Loney heading the offense...sign or trade for a hitter !

"As for reliever Will Ohman and Juan Cruz are still free agents."
Cruz isn't a FA, he signed with KC in Feb.

Damn you, Kinsey.
I was gonna say that.

Could the Astros package Towles and one of the BP guys for a solid 3B prospect and a "will work for now player"? Maybe Conor Gillaspie, and Uribe?

With Koyie Hill making the most of his chance to backup Soto, the cubs should look at offering up Bako.
As long as all/ any of those players still have options, the Cubs should go one for one if Sabean is interested. He is inexpensive and better than Bowen and Bard. Plus he is a left-handed bat to compliment Molina.
I agree the Giants need another bat, but backup catcher isn't the place to add one.
They should look to the Angels OF or maybe even Holliday if the A's fall out of it. Beltre may even be an addition and move Sandavol to first if Ishikawa shows he isn't quite ready.

Whoops sorry. Jimmy Gobble is a free agent. To be or not to be?

Can the Giants trade Perdomo? They got him from the Cards in the Rule 5 draft.

"How can the beat LA with Manny, Hudson, Loney heading the offense"
Manny is going to be a beast with that new flat bat he's using.

I'm absolutely stunned that the Red Sox couldn't get anything for Josh Bard. He might be the second best hitting backup catcher in baseball (behind Salty).
Posted by: Little Bear | March 19, 2009 at 10:52 AM
Bard-O is a great option as a backup.
Obviously, '07 with the Padres was a fluke season for him.. Still he could probably give a team a .270ish AVG, a little pop and solid D.
Little Bear, I agree with you.. I'm shocked there is limited interest in this guy as a backup.

"I'm absolutely stunned that the Red Sox couldn't get anything for Josh Bard. He might be the second best hitting backup catcher in baseball (behind Salty)."
Salty probably isn't the backup anymore. Unless Teagarden somehow manages to take the spot based on defensive ability, I would expect Saltalmacchia to be their starting catcher going into the season.
Either way, the Giants really shouldn't give anything of decent value up for a catcher that is going to be the obvious backup to Bengie Molina. He'll get the majority of the at bats anyways and Sandoval can catch too so it's really not worth giving up talent

JBagCards: They can in fact trade Perdomo. The only detail is that whatever team trades for him must still keep him in the Majors all year or offer him back to the Cards. Example: Josh Hamilton, when he was taken in the Rule V by the Cubs and then traded to the Reds...

Ugh.

Cubs fan, scribbletone? At least you aren't an Astros fan...they lost Johan Santana. Ouch.

I don't buy it. Of all the miles of articles I've read, I do not see "the Giants actively looking to upgrade at backup catcher and long relief". Sounds like another Manny deal where "if we can sign the right player at the right price under our terms, we're open to all possibilities".
Posted by: Gary D | March 19, 2009 at 12:17 PM
This is stupid, we have a decent backup in Steve Holm but probably the best backup in the majors with our new 3B Pablo Sandoval. Lets not forget Buster Posey waiting in the wings. If it isnt Josh Bard I dont want it.

Clint Sammons, Buddy Carlyle, and Rafael Soriano for Villalona? That'd go down as the worst trade in SF history, but I'd vote yes.
Posted by: PWHjort | March 19, 2009 at 02:05 PM
Never mind, didn't realize he was strictly a 1B now.
Posted by: PWHjort | March 19, 2009 at 02:07 PM
Texas will probably demand either Lincecum or Cain for Salty or Teagarden!

"Could the Astros package Towles and one of the BP guys for a solid 3B prospect and a "will work for now player"? Maybe Conor Gillaspie, and Uribe?"
Yeah uhm no, no way are you getting Gillaspie especially for a backup scrub.
Posted by: lincecum4cy | March 19, 2009 at 02:18 PM
Pablo Sandoval won't catch this year. They want him to concentrate on 3rd.
Posted by: The Management | March 19, 2009 at 02:20 PM
I start getting pump up for the season, then read something like this and it takes me back down to earth, this is what the giants least needs are a backup catcher,I mean if that the biggest need you have you must have a hell of a lineup, their biggest NEED is a power hitting corner infielder, I think they could land Dallas McPherson if they would look into it, the Marlins have excess at 3rd, so stop worry about a backup catcher, when you have Holms, and Sandavol and start thinking about someone like Mcpherson
Posted by: bobbybonds254 | March 19, 2009 at 03:02 PM
The Giants already have a long reliever....His name's Barry Zito, eventually there isn't going to be a rotation spot for him with all of the stud pitching prospects in the Giants far system.
Posted by: leftcoastbias | March 19, 2009 at 04:33 PM
However the Giants need someone better then Zito.
Posted by: kdub | March 19, 2009 at 05:37 PM
I dont see what's wrong with Holm as the back-up and Sandoval catching some games
I also dont know why we would trade for a long relief guy we have plenty of options there (Yabu, Misch, Medders)
If your gonna make any move Sabean, it has to be to get a power hitter THATS IT
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | March 19, 2009 at 06:21 PM
"I don't buy it."
Neither do I, Gary D. The Giants [Read : Sabean] haven't shown explicit interest in any position or player in the past 2 years and all of a sudden they're "actively seeking" 2 positions?
I wish Sabean would quit playing this "wait and see what I'm gonna do" game where he teases the fans by pretending that he's in on someone good or that he's holding out to make a blockbuster trade. Truth is, he doesnt have a clue what he's doing. His signings are getting perpetually worse and he's never met a bad trade that he doesnt like.
Hopefully Sabes doesnt get renewed for another 2 years. I, for one, can't wait until he's on a plane headed out of town. And for the love of Pete, please take Bochy with you.
Rags in 2010 Giants fans.
Posted by: orangeandblack | March 19, 2009 at 07:11 PM
i like Rags but dont think hes the right guy orangeandblack
get Bob Brenly SF loves him
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | March 19, 2009 at 08:07 PM
I like Rags, am sure Brenly would be great, but am thinking Decker may be the manager-to-be. He's moving up quick through the system, staying with the young aces he groomed at A-ball and building on his work with Sandoval by working this year with Posey.
Posted by: The Management | March 19, 2009 at 08:37 PM
I like Decker and he'll be great when the 2011 and 2012 crowd rolls into camp, but for team cohesion and to get from here to there, I like Righetti just a little bit better.
In general, catchers make better managers, but in the NL West over the next 2-3 years pitching is going to be the deal breaker for who claims the division title. Who better than Rags?
Whoever it may be, I hope I'm not alone in wanting to see Bochy gone.
