| Cabrera, Garciaparra Contract Details »

SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up; let's take a look.
- Heyman says Oakland's "win now" mandate this winter came from owner Lewis Wolff.
- The Astros and Marlins are interested in Ivan Rodriguez, "no matter what they say publicly."
- Heyman says Pedro Martinez is "talking up a Dodgers reunion." So far, there's been no indication the Dodgers are entertaining it.
- Edgar Renteria's agent was initially asking for a three or four-year deal.
- It's no surprise that Frank Catalanotto is available, but the $6MM owed to him is an obvious impediment.
- According to Heyman, Andruw Jones told Rangers brass he's flexible on the March 20th decision date in his contract.
- Heyman describes the Josh Hamilton extension talks as "just getting going" and believe the John Lackey discussions have only been preliminary.
Pedro back to Dodgers? Took 2 ownership and multiple GM changes to make that go thru his mind....if he's even thinking it. He'd be a baddazz closer.

Boras: "You say they are interested in Pudge, I don't care whether its true or not!"
Heyman: "But.."
Boras: "If you want access to my negotiations, say it!"
..what a tool

Pedro to Oakland or Washington makes sense, as well as LAD.

I doubt Pedro will go to Oakland. I think they are happy with the pitchers that they have right now, and they want to see how they do. Gallagher should be much improved, as well as the other youngsters in that rotation.
Pedro does make sense in Washington, and the Dodgers do need something in their rotation, as there's not much OOMPH factor there. I mean, after Billingsley and Kuroda, you have an improving Kershaw (I highly doubt he'll dominate this year... yet), and Wolf (who's definitely going to miss half his starts, lol). I doubt he will go to the Dodgers as a closer, as I think they are more than happy to let Broxton run away with the job.
Andruw Jones is at a crossroads now in his career. He either makes it this year, or he's flamed out. I mean, if he can't hit in a ballpark designed for hitters, and with one of the best pitching coaches in the league, who else would want him? His calling card, his defense, has disappeared, and he wasn't even that good of a hitter to begin with (yes, he had power, but his contact rate was pretty bad. Can't remember the numbers).

If Pudge continues to play well, he will surely price himself out of the Astros and Marlins price range. Who wants him then? Surely his ego won't let him become a back up. What do yall think his options would be after pricing those two teams out?

Andruw Jones was a good hitter. He sported an OPS+ of over 110 for 8 out of 9 years (98-06). He hit 30+ HR's in 6 out of 7 years (00-06). Throw in GG defense and Andruw was easily a top player in the game for a long time.

TheTEEJ - someone will get hurt or play poorly. The market has severely over corrected. Buying Pudge at a million or two will be a steal for a team in need (Yankees when they realize that Posada can't catch).

the dodgers wont use him as a closer, ala broxton. they'll use him as the 5 starter.
also, Paul making an impression on Torre, do they keep 3 catchers? Ausmus, Martin, and Paul, or are they going to have him be in AAA

bjsguess,
The key word is "was." Since roughly August 2006, he's shown no indication that he can be an effective offensive player any more.
We may never know why he collapsed so quickly. It's merely a guess, but the fact that he played nearly every inning of every game for a decade at a plus defensive position may have just physically worn him out.

Any team can get Catalanotto if they are willing to give J.D a free queso at Chili's.

LDY4L, I don't know what you're thinking bro but Xavier Paul's an outfielder, not a catcher. I guess if Torre likes him enough the Dodgers could trade Delwyn Young to give him a roster spot, or keep him on as a 5th outfielder/pinch runner/lefty bat off the bench or something. The likely scenario is him going back to AAA, raking, and garnering enough trade value to be part of a SP trade package in July.

Oh wow, my bad. i really have no idea who i was thinking about. kinda funny, i looked at the box score today at around 1pm, and was wondering why he was playing right.
now that i know hes a catcher, delwyon young had shoulder surgery this offseason. if he cant be healthy when the season starts, paul could take his spot, or he could go to AAA, like you said.

I agree BJ, however, I was just thinking that seeing as the Astros don't want to spend more than 50 bucks on a catcher, he will ultimately price himself out of their range. PS Posada cant throw out runners either. Always use that against him when I have fantasy players who can run playing the Yankees.
