According to MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince, the Indians claimed righty Jae Kuk Ryu off waivers from the Padres today. Ryu had arthroscopic elbow surgery in July. No offense to Ryu, but it's not a good sign when the pitching-starved Padres don't have room for you.

Still think this guy could amount to something. Not sure what his issues are anymore but hopefully it's just medical and he can realize his talent. Maybe the osprey incident affected him more than we know. It was three years before he made it to the majors so that's doubtful. I'd hate to see him just wash out, he had promise.

Actually, it was pretty poor commentary.
The Padres do have a real pitching problem, but it is so bad, that they have to have an abundance of healthy arms to choose from...thus no room for a pitcher rehabbing from injury.
Towers as always liked Ryu and tried to get him from the Cubs in the past; and not without reason.
The kid's future will depend on his recovery and the care & patience of the Indians management!

The San Francisco Giants had 10 or 11 consecutive batters reach base with hits off Ryu the other day. The Giants.
Best of luck Indians.

kdub, point taken, but if he's just now coming back from surgery then perhaps he just needs time to get back where he should be. He's still young so he has time to figure it out.

Don't forget that the Tribe picked Rafael Betancourt up off the scrap heap. With Westbrook going on the 60 day DL they had a roster spot to play with. Why not take a look, up close and personal? Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

yeah, low risk and likely low reward move. With Miller being hurt and Mujica likely to be gone, it's a nice depth add for the Tribe.
Not really expecting to see him on the big league club though anytime soon with Meloan, Sipp, and Salas ahead of him....
