According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Marlins released outfielder Jay Gibbons today.
Gibbons and Jose Guillen were the first players to be suspended without failing a drug test. Gibbons was slapped with a 15-day penalty in December of '07 after SI.com learned that he'd received shipments of steroids and hGH. He was released by the Orioles in March of '08 (they ate $11.9MM), and shortly thereafter the Gibbons and Guillen suspensions were rescinded. Gibbons wrote an impassioned letter to all 30 teams, and then spent '08 with the Long Island Ducks before signing a minor league deal with the Brewers.

They must have some monsters in camp. Gibbons got cut in the 1st round.
From Roch: Gibbons batted .313 with two doubles, one home run, seven RBIs and a .625 slugging percentage in 16 at-bats with the Marlins. He went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer yesterday against the Mets.

Either that, or this was one of those agreements where they knew Gibbons wasn't going to make the team or wasn't going to play as much as he wanted, so they agreed to let him go early to try to land another job.
He could help someone as an occasional guy.

Gibbons didn't really have a place to fit in on this team.
They already have Maybin, Ross and Hermida set in the outfield, with guys like Stanton and Raynor coming up long term.
The whole lineup is set, barring a decision to play McPherson at third and Cantu at first.
Gibbons probably never gets another MLB job..

There's no way, you can't afford the defensive liability. The A's will probably look into it, with any hope that is.
