I'd much rather the Cubs hold onto Guzman than Gaudin.
Gaudin is more capable of starting, but his upside isn't nearly as high and Guzman profiles better as a reliever.
Guzman has the big power stuff, and has shown the ability to give up few homers, which is huge for a reliever.
Gaudin has had issues with walks, and his good 2006 was based around a very low BABIP allowed.
I say trade Gaudin, put Samardzija in AAA, and give Guzman the bullpen spot. I still really want to see if Samardzija can develop into a good starter, because with Harden gone after the season, and Lilly the year after that, there's a decent chance that he could factor into the 2010 rotation.

Gaudin makes more than Guzman. It will be tough to deal either one with their out of option status and bad spring training performances.
Both are better pitchers than they are showing, but...

you have to stick with Guzman. I would bet he would stay healthy if he was strictly in the pen.
I would really like to see what Patton can do...what i have "seen" he is looking really really good. Take a low risk chance on this guy!

I didn't realize that Gaudin is making $2M this year, that definitely will make him more difficult to trade.
I still would rather cut Gaudin and give the spot to Guzman, simply because I prefer Guzman greatly.

You gotta feel bad for Schmidt.
But, it's still really awesome that it's the Dodgers that are getting burned by him. Thanks, Agent Ned!

Again, Gaudin makes more than Guzman and does not have the upside. It will be harder to move Gaudin. Of the two, I would rather Gaudin gets traded, but I could see Guzman going somewhere first.
Patton has caused a situation, in a good way.

I cannot stress enough, it is too early to judge the Garza/Young swap. Give it another year or two at least.

I agree scribble - worst case, just cut Gaudin. I could imagine if the Cubs eat some of that $2 million they could at least get someone for him.
time is running out though!

"I cannot stress enough, it is too early to judge the Garza/Young swap. Give it another year or two at least."
Agreed. I think Young is going to bounce back and have a strong season, no way he could be as bad as he was last year.

Take loads of PEDS and get paid 47 million over 3 years. Mr. Schmidt you are a genius!

How about Gaudin, Guzman and Marshall, and Smarzdja for Peavy?

You make it sound like Young was horrible last year. The guy got off to a rough start, but had a strong 2nd half at the plate and ended up hitting .290 with about 10 HR's. I agree he'll have a better year this year, but if a guy went his whole career hitting .290 with about 10 HR's a year, that wouldn't be bad. I also thinks it's too early to judge the trade, however I think it's going to work out well for both teams in the end.

The Korean players have loads of talent and would be a great market to really work on from a MLB perspective, but each player has to perform mandatory military service, much like all males from Israel and China and that is a drawback from teams heavily scouting and putting in resources into those areas.
If Korea would exempt players from the 2008WBC from military service, maybe MLB teams would take a closer look at those. One team was exempted from service, I forget which however...
Have a feeling the Garza/Bartlett trade for Young/Harris trade is going to get even more lopsided as the years progress. Both Bartlett and Garza were far more effective than Harris and Young in 2008 and Young has yet to throw any of his famous attitude tantrums as of yet either.

If the Yankees are serious about trading Melky, why not trade him to the Dodgers for D. Young? It may sound like a wash, but Young can hit more(for power, more potential) and would benefit from the 314 RF, just like he would in Fenway like I said on the Delcarmen post. Melky is a center fielder who could benefit from getting out of NY, where the media jumps on young kids for struggles. Both players could benefit from a trade, as they dont fit on their current teams.

If that guy bats .290 and slugs .400, while only reaching base 33 percent of the time, from the prime offensive position on the diamond (LF), then yeah, that is pretty horrible. Factor in that you traded Garza, a guy who looks like the next John Smoltz for Young, and it makes it that much worse.

i been a melky cabrera fan since he came up from the yankees farm system. when sheffield and matsui went down back in 06. i think melky just had an off year which gave gardner the chance to win. i like gardner too because he reminds a lot of juan "quierre" lol. anyways, i think if he gets traded away i'll be sad but i will be a fan of him because i watch yankee games and i've liked the way he has performed besides last season. i wish him the best of luck this season.

For all the Guzman favoritism, it is worth remembering that Chad Gaudin is still actually a year and a half younger than Angel Guzman, which does seem really odd given how long Gaudin has been in the majors and how many teams he has already played on by the age of 26 (Four - TB, Oak, Tor, Chicago).
Gaudin is unquestionably the better pitcher than the perennial disappointment in Guzman. But Gaudin has had more recent health concerns, which should work against him. His higher salary normally makes it harder to deal him, but he is a 26yo experienced starter and a SP with a $2mill salary isn't really that much of a burden...

Gaudin has had a back injury. The kiss of death for any pitcher unless it gets healed. Guzman has had two TJ surguries at his young age though.

The Royals will steal the AL Central this year just like TB last year
