| Offseason In Review: Oakland A's »
By Tim Dierkes [March 10, 2009 at 11:12am CST]
Links for Tuesday...
- Chat today, 2pm CST.
- RotoAuthority sums up the stats you should target in each category for your fantasy league.
- The Braves released pitcher Anthony Lerew, according to Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
- Rany Jazayerli says the Royals will be better just by subtracting Ross Gload, Tony Pena Jr., and Joey Gathright. Here's my Offseason In Review for the club, if you're interested.
- A's manager Bob Geren "chuckled and said no" when asked if Bobby Crosby is being showcased at third base for the Yankees, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Crosby is learning third in part because Eric Chavez is injured again.
- Speaking of Crosby, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune wonders if the Cubs could work out a deal involving reliever Luis Vizcaino. Despite the $4MM owed to Vizcaino, he's not a lock for the Cubs' bullpen. We learned last week that the Cubs do not appear interested in Crosby.
- Slusser also has an article about young A's pitcher Michael Ynoa, who believes he can be in the Majors in two years at age 19.
- Andruw Jones apologized to Dodgers fans in this Bill Plaschke article.
- Talking to Paul Hagen of the Philadelphia Daily News, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel sees Jayson Werth missing no more than 15-20 games this year. Geoff Jenkins, with $8MM left on his contract, looks like the odd man out.
I think andruw jones will always be dispised by Dodger fans.
Granted that, i think it was good for him to somewhat apologize in that article.
However, if he hasnt the worse dodger pick up probably ever, the dodgers most likely would never gone after manny.
so in a way it was a good/bad thing jones was horrible because it brought Manny to LA.
either way ill still boo him whenever i see him.

The Cubs don't need Crosby. The Riot and Fontenot are more than qualified to handle the middle of the infield. They are two, young, scrappy kids who play their hearts out everyday. If any two players have proven they deserve a chance it's these two.

Ugh! Class at 3... gonna miss the chat.

On Ynao:
"It wouldn't surprise me," Double-A catcher Anthony Recker said. "He has great stuff. I could tell he was working at 75 percent and the ball was still jumping out of his hand. Great movement. He's well ahead of most 17-year-olds."
I'd hope he is ahead of most 17 year olds if he believes he can be in the majors in 2 years.
"Ynoa has played in only 15 games in his life."
Seriously?

I don't see Andruw giving the money back, though . . . .
Posted by: Mattyc44 | March 10, 2009 at 12:33 PM
Its good that Andruw apologized to the Dodgers. I've always like to watch him play with the Braves. He was great and I wish him the best this year. I also wish that he was back with the Braves so that I could cheer for him and Chipper. They were the best.

Have people actually continued to call this guy Ynao? Hasn't it been proven that this guys last name is spelled I-N-O-A..?
And I think it'll be interesting to see how this guy stacks up with some of the other elite latin pitchers of his time, guys like King Felix, Neftali Feliz, Julio Teheran, etc.
And if the Cubbies could land Crosby just for Vizcaino, I think that could be a worthwhile deal.
He'd give the Cubs a better backup SS/3B option than Aaron Miles, and the Cubs have the arms (Gaudin, Guzman, Hart, Shark, etc.) to easily replace Vizcaino.
There's still some upside in Crosby, and the Cubs will be in very serious trouble if Ramirez is out for any extended period of time.

Even if there was a reason for Andruw to give the money back and he wanted to the player's association would never let that happen. Just be happy that he was willing to defer money in return for his release. If he doesn't do that there's no way the Dodgers are able to make all the signings they did this offseason.
Colletti offered Andruw way more than he should have, Andruw played crappy, and the fans hated him. Its over at this point. Dodgers fans really need to get over Andruw.

I'm pretty sure its actually Ynoa. That's the way I've seen it spelled for the past few months and that's how they're spelling it on the official Oakland page over at MLB.com

Apologies on the Ynao vs Ynoa typo scribbletone, I believe it is correct to use the Ynoa spelling: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Inoa

interesting link hammel-
Guy sounds like a total beast, I like the inadvertent comedy on the page where it says Ynoa chose the A's over the New York team... because of their better pitcher development record {citation needed}

So how would trading for Crosby impact the immenent Cubs trade for Jake Peavy? Does San Diego want Crosby?
Posted by: jneely77 | March 10, 2009 at 01:46 PM
Ynoa, if that's really the correct spelling, did choose the A's over more money because of their track record of developing pitchers. If that's how Oakland spells his name, I'm assuming that's correct.
And as a Cubs fan, let me say this: GIVE UP ON PEAVY.
He's just not coming to Chicago. Not now, and not soon. The Cubs don't have the talent or payroll to land Peavy, and there are no indications that will change.

Does Ryan Freel for Luis Vizcaino make some sense?

scribbletone, I have to take you to task here. You just joined a list of people who made stupid comments about something they absolutely had no way of knowing. Basically, instead of telling us that the trade isn't going to go through based on some important, intimate knowledge that apparently only you seem to have, go tell Hendry and Towers. Go tell both teams ownership and direct them to have their general managers stop wasting time on it. Tell the Cubs that they don't have the money to complete the deal and tell San Diego that the Cubs don't have the talent they want.
You know, there's no talk about a Cubs/Peavy trade right now, and I could care less whether it gets revived or not. I do know, however, that if it gets revived it will be because the Cubs do have talent that San Diego could use and the Cubs would be able to fit Peavy into their payroll. In fact the reason why they were talking in the first place was because both those things were true.
Sorry, I just get sick and tired of people telling us things that they can't possibly know. You gave us your opinion as if it were the voice of God. Instead of issuing bold proclamations just stick with some humble commentary. Or go to the future and verify your claims before you make them. Whichever....

I agree with you Scribbletone. When I was watching the cubs/sox game last week they had Lou on and he said one of the few things he thought they still might need is backup 3B guy. Miles can play third, but I don't know how well. I don't really know much about Hoffpauir. He was playing first these games.
I really wish the white sox would think about Crosby. I remember him being a pretty decent fielder and if he stayed healthy I really think he could hit 20 HRS at the Cell.
Plus right now they are talking about having their #1 pick last year Beckham start the year as the starting 2B, which I don't like at all with a guy who's never played minors and would be at a new position. If they get Crosby he could play ss and Ramirez back to second or maybe even Crosby at second, and he'd be insurance for third when Fields either gets hurt or sucks

Does Ryan Freel for Luis Vizcaino make some sense?
Posted by: RoyalsRetro | March 10, 2009 at 03:31 PM
Yeah it does since it would be pretty much a bad money for bad money swap and more importantly Freel could backup 3B and just about anywhere. I've heard the Orioles were going to platoon him and Pie, but I'm sure they could find someone else. Although I've heard Pie has looked dreadful in spring training so far but it is spring training.

With regards to the spelling..."Inoa" vs. "Ynoa"...it should be noted that he signed his name "Michal Ynoa" (note the spelling of his first name) on his first certified autographed baseball cards (2008 Bowman Chrome Draft). On more recent cards, he signs it "Michal Inoa," with an "I" rather than a "Y." However, it should be noted that it's clearly NOT a letter "e" he's signing in his first name, but rather an "a" (although I must also note that both certified autographs as well as early stuff I've seen signed in person from Johnny Cueto was signed "Yonny Cueto.").

Can Crosby play 3b? If so.. I'd say do it if the A's were interested.

"There's still some upside in Crosby, and the Cubs will be in very serious trouble if Ramirez is out for any extended period of time." posted by xxgochisox09
Disagree. First of all the Cubs had one of the better offenses in MLB last year, they can withstand the loss of a productive starter about as well as anyone else can. Plus, define "serious trouble". Are you saying that the Cubs have no chance of getting to the playoffs without Ramirez? They'll only score half as many runs? Ramirez is the only good hitter on the team?
No team wants to lose a good hitter like ARam, but the Cubs (like the Yankees) are one of the teams that can still win in their division without their third baseman. Saying that they'll be in "serious trouble" strikes me as nothing but wishful thinking by a White Sox fan.
One last thing, what makes you think the Cubs will lose Ramirez for any length of time? He's probably got about an average chance among major leaguers of missing significant time. Again, I think you're hoping instead of analyzing.
Posted by: pageian | March 10, 2009 at 06:34 PM
A Cub lineup with Miles in place of Ramirez is substantially worse. Ramirez is an elite all around player and Miles doesn't come close in a single offensive aspect of the game.
I in no way believe Ramirez will get hurt, but it's always a possibility and this team is too good to be sunk by losing A-Ram. Miles sucks. I exagerrated in saying they'd be in serious trouble, but the fact is that Ramirez would be a monster loss to that offense. Bradley is a wild card, we don't know what Fontenot, Lee, Fukudome, and Theriot will really offer. Soriano and Soto are the only two guys that you know will be good. I'd feel better if the eighth guy is NOT Aaron Miles at third if Ramirez were to get hurt.
They can still win without Ramirez, but this team simply oughta have a better 3B option than Miles

Pageian,
Actually the thing you cut and pasted about "The cubs being in serious trouble if Ramirez went down" I didn't post in here. Scribbletone did. Anyone that doesn't believe me please feel free to scroll back up this page and look at Scribbletone's post at 12:43 today... then scroll down some more and look at my post 4:54 today in here.
Posted by: xxgochisox09 | March 10, 2009 at 10:03 PM
and one more thing...
Seeing how you cut and pasted it the way you did. You purposely did that so it would look like I said it so you could be a big tough guy and yell and a white sox fan. If you scroll back through this post it's obvious since there the way you pasted it never appears before you did it that way.
Here was my logic in the cubs getting Crosby if they can.
i've actually been on record on this website saying the cubs will win their division and havn't once tried to bash them. Here was my thinking though...
If they get a guy like Crosby, maybe they can rest Ramirez more often if they have a competent backup 3B. I don't know if you've noticed, but the cubs seem to have a problem with those things called the playoffs...you know the thing your team hasn't won in 101 years now.
Pretty sad when a white sox fan knows more about the cubs then a cubs fan does.Until I make you look stupid again. Have a nice evening
Posted by: xxgochisox09 | March 10, 2009 at 10:10 PM
Oh you're the same idiot that can't get over the cubs not trading for Peavy. Ok sorry i shouldn't pick on handicap people
Posted by: xxgochisox09 | March 10, 2009 at 10:12 PM
chisox- good stuff. I appreciate your comments and I agree with you in full except about the Peavy thing. Getting Crosby for Viscaino is a steal. Crosby has been hurt and that is why he hasn't been putting up good numbers. Both contracts come off the books after this year so it'd be a wash for both teams. Can we just not talk about Peavy anymore? It isn't up to anyone on this website or to anyone outside of Hendry and Towers. The Cubs had the peices Towers wanted they just didn't pull the trigger, so if they revisit it, it could get done. Not saying it's a good idea because I don't feel it is, but if there is one thing a baseball fan should know, anything can happen at anytime.
