« Twins Sign 27 Players To 1-Year Deals | Main | A-Rod Will Undergo Surgery »
Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun reports the Orioles have agreed to terms on a $650,000 one-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie.
Guthrie earned $770,000 last year and has taken a pay cut on account of his salary being incommensurate with his service time. To contrast, Schmuck notes Nick Markakis made $455,000 in 2008 with similar service time.

I certainly hope that this is the precursor to a longer term deal. I don't know if Guthrie should get paid as much as Lester just did, but something in the same ballpark wouldn't be out of line, especially given his work ethic and how he's already started being the mentor to the "cavalry", as Trembley called them.

"I certainly hope that this is the precursor to a longer term deal. "
Since pretty much every pre-arb player who doesn't sign an extension does this, it wouldn't really signal something special.
I think it would be a good idea to talk extension though.
Guthrie is several years older than Lester, which should be taken into account though.

What is the reason Guthrie was earning $770k in the first place? Was it related to his initial contract after being drafted?

Nothing says I want to sign a young good pitcher to a long term deal then CUTTING his pay.
Renew him, give him a slight bump, but cut his pay?

ehh this could hurt the relationship between guthrie and the Orioles GM by geting a paycut after having his best year stuff wise...other than that good luck getting an extension

The O's will probably never sign him to an extension. He'll be 34 by the time he hits the open market.

I might be in the minority but I think once some young arms start proving themselves, Guthrie might have to get traded, not extended.

Could be traded. Still - he has tremendous value because of his cost containment. Signing him through his arb years and buying our a year or two of FA would be a very smart move.

Part of the reason Guthrie's salary was higher last year is because part of his signing bonus from his days in Cleveland was still being payed off and counted towards his salary, even though it wasn't on the books for the Orioles. So really I think he's making about the same if not a little more from the Orioles than he did last year.
