"Arias, who came to Texas in the Alex Rodriguez trade"
Like Carl Pavano, Doyle Alexander, and many others... the real highlight of his career will be he was traded for a HOFer

I wouldn't be so down on Doyle. The guy actually had a rather productive career. He was no John Smoltz, but he was a productive player.

i really hope the phillies get andruw jones. the phillies farm system will really help him find his swing and get him back into shape. as long as he takes a minor league deal i hope they can land him. can't hurt.

"I wouldn't be so down on Doyle."
Alright, a little cruel of me to throw his name next to Pavano's. But let me put it this way... the only time his name will be an answer to a trivia question is "who did the Tiger trade John Smoltz for?"

Let me start off by saying I'm a huge Smoltz fan and think that trade was probably the best in Braves history, but Alexander did go 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA and 3 shutouts in Detroit. They made the playoffs, but lost to the Twins.
I'm sure Detroit was more than happy with the trade at the time.

T.R. Sullivan, wow you really don't have a clue about the Reds do you. Keppinger was traded cause they had too many infielders they liked. You can quote me on this one. The Reds are not looking for utility guys. I promise you that.

And I'm certain the Red Sox were very happy with the Larry Andersen trade at the time... doesn't change the fact that Jeff Bagwell went on to put up HOF numbers.

There are others who have corroborated they (Phils) are presently scouting Arias, so it doesn't appear Sullivan is making that up. And if you haven't seen Arias before, I wouldn't dismiss him so easily. If not for Andrus and Kinsler, he'd be a much more valuable prospect for Texas. He makes good contact, can drive the ball, plays good defense, and has very good speed. The only knock on him is that he had a very serious shoulder injury about 3 years ago that completely derailed his career, and is only now able to adequately make a throw from the ss hole. It's a shame too, because I've read that before the injury he had a real gun.
So the Reds might be eying him not for a utility role, but to be their SS for the foreseeable future.
I imagine that if these rumors persist, they will be accompanied by rumors about Homer Bailey from the other side - Texas has been eyeing him for awhile.

Poor Andruw! They took away the "shots" and he returned to his natural weight. He will continue to be a wasted investment to anyone who gives up 4% of their roster to him. He was an unbelievable defensive center-fielder, but throw him a ball low and breaking away....and he cannot control himself...another whiff! A sad, sad story!

I don't see any deal to let Jones go now...why? He won't be bringing much in return and the Rangers need a right handed bat in the order.
Arias is a lot better than people realize or give him credit for being. He did a superb job subbing for Kinsler last season and he's fast. I wouldn't give Arias up cheaply.

The Reds are not in need of utility infield help.. where do they get this stuff? They have Rosales, Janish, Castillo and Richar to choose from... I don't get this trading for a shortstop. Also, there's Valika in the minors.. I am confused. :)

I'm not so sure. The metrics say his defense while playing in Texas wasn't too good, and while he makes a lot of contact, there isn't a lot of power or patience going on there. I'm not really sure that he can maintain a 6.0% walk rate, considering that's higher than the level he had set in AAA in 2006 and 2008, so I just don't see him improving his discipline that much upon arriving to the big leagues.
He's a decent young player, but he's not going to be a good everyday player on a really good team, and I really don't think he'd hold any more value than say, Ronny Cedeno.
