| Pedro Hopes For Return To Mets? »

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new blog post up.
- The Astros plan to give Chris Johnson a chance to win the third base job, but Stark says Juan Uribe, Jose Bautista, and Jeff Baker "could still show up on their shopping list in the next two weeks."
- Stark heard "rumblings the Yankees are poking around again on Mike Cameron's availability." Back in December, the Yanks and Brewers were pretty close on a deal.
- Eric Milton is looking decent and appears to be the frontrunner for the Dodgers' fifth starter job (given Pedro Martinez's asking price).
- Will Ohman seeks a one-year, $1.75MM deal with easily-reachable incentives for another million. He also prefers the West Coast, and Stark believes the Padres and Giants are more likely than the Dodgers. Like the Dodgers, the Phillies and Marlins have interest at a lesser price. Stark has also heard the Phils connected to Giants lefty Jack Taschner.
- Shawn Camp, Geoff Geary, John Buck, and Geoff Jenkins are currently available. The Phillies would eat almost all of the $8MM owed to Jenkins.
Cameron makes zero sense right now. Gardner is crushing the ball and I believe Cash has said they aren't gonna add any more payroll at this point.

"The Phillies would eat almost all of the $8MM owed to Jenkins."
We said the same thing about Eaton. I'm thinking calling everyone up and telling them you'll give a player away is maybe not the best strategy.
Not that other teams should be blamed for laying off a 33-year-old outfielder with a 79 OPS+.

Where have you heard Geoff Geary is on the block. Thats bogus because Ed Wade usually keeps things like that under wraps

The Yanks aren't going to trade for Cameron yet. Gardner did more than was asked of him and went out and clearly won the CF job. Whether he continues to produce remains to be seen (this is spring training he will come back down to earth). If he can get on base at a decent clip in the 9 hole while using his speed on the base paths and continues to play stellar defense I do not think any move will be made. If the Yankees are struggling without Arod and Gardner is not hitting at all I think we could see Cameron in pinstripes by early summer.
I really think it is going to be up to the teams performance not just Gardners when deciding whether to trade for Cameron.
Posted by: yanks09 | March 19, 2009 at 05:29 PM
Cameron doesn't make any sense on the Brewer end either. Gardner and Cabrera are both downgrades to Cameron and the entire point of the trade was to free up money to get pitching. Now that they signed Looper there isn't really any room for more pitching.
Posted by: Ender | March 19, 2009 at 05:29 PM
Cabrera is out of options but Gardner is winning the job. Can the Yankees keep both with Swish, Xavier, Hideki, Damon? Don't think so, but curious what some Yankee fans think.
Cameron makes little sense for this team which is full of second tier outfielders. Can't see that happening.

"The most-heard observation about the Yankees this spring: That team could have serious, and potentially fatal, defensive issues. They're range-challenged in left, in right and at shortstop. They have reliability issues at second. Alex Rodriguez is now a major question on every level. And nobody knows what kind of defensive catcher Jorge Posada is capable of being over the long haul. There are rumblings the Yankees are poking around again on Mike Cameron's availability".
This is total 100% BS from top to bottom. Who are the rumblings from, Yankee haters? Damon is range challenged? Arm challenged maybe, but the guy can still cover ground. RF? Swish and Nady are adequate, not spectacular....but to say they are a scary liability is stupid. If Jorge can't throw, Molina is the best in MLB at it. Cervelli also has a cannon. Cano had mild discomfort...he rested and is fine now. Jeter is Jeter. He's not Visquel or Ozzie but he's not going to lose you many...and stat nerds, don't waste your time with your BS zone ratings and other crap. You guys never even watch him play an inning...I see nearly every game!
While the Yankees are NOT a defensive stallwort by any means, they are not the bad news bears either. Their pitching and hitting will make-up for it...just like every year.
As for Cameron...why the F would the Yankees want a 37 year old who'll hit .240 and K 150 times for 10 million? Gardner's D is just as solid at this point in Cam's career...Gardner has been raking in pre-season and if he can hit .270, he'll steal 50 bases. Just fine for a #9 hitter.

Melkor - That's a good question. I'm curious to see what they do with Melky as well.
Matsui won't see the field if the Yankees can help it. Damon, Gardner & Nady look like the starters with Swish the fourth OF. With ARod out, they may not have the luxury of keeping basically a sixth OF. If they can't trade Melky, he's gone cause he'll never pass thru waivers. Despite a down year, the guy is still only 24...is a switch hitter who has already led the AL in assists, has a cannon arm and has the potential to go .275 14 75 20sb's as he matures and develops more plate discipline. That's not horrible bang for the buck.
Posted by: jjyankeesfan2 | March 19, 2009 at 06:33 PM
jjyankeesfan2 agree with you 100% on both posts. Melky is going to have a productive MLB career. People rip him because he isn't an elite prospect and will never put up dazzling numbers but trust me plenty of teams are hoping they get a shot to add him to their team.
This is just speculation but I think fans got spoiled during the steroid era. Every team will not be loaded with guys putting up ridiculous numbers anymore. In a couple years teams are going to full of guys like Melky because the playstation stats have already been disappearing.
Posted by: yanks09 | March 19, 2009 at 06:55 PM
Stark needs to check hid facts a little better...in that article, he said St. Louis has the second-highest payroll in the NL Central. That's not true--the Astros do.

Will this finally be the year "The Melkman" reaches his unlimited potential and embarks on a HOF career ?LOL!

Will this be the year when you finally grow the F up and keep your stupid comments to yourself and stop wasting space on this chat board? My guess is "no" because you have nothing else to do but constantly make a fool of yourself.

And another Yankee fan bites the dust. Sweet!

Ya like your centerfielder is ANYTHING to write home about. 3 years from now he'll be the next bust that was held on way too long.
Those in glass houses . . .
Posted by: philsWSchamps | March 20, 2009 at 08:41 AM
oh and if the Phils hadn't have rushed to sign Jenkins before realizing Werth was a full time player then they wouldn't have wasted the money on him. Another ridiculous contract. That $8 million would've looked nice this year on another pitcher or stud reliever.

EXACTLY! However, you need to consider the source. It's coming from an inbred 13 year old who has nothing to do during study hall but to make an azz of himself...constantly.

John Buck is not on the trading block. The Royals don't have any holes to fill anyway, maybe a 5th starter if I'm really picky, but we have several more than adequate candidates.
Can't wait to see KC kick the Yankees in the overpaid steroid injected butt.
The Yankees and Astros look like Geritol train wrecks waiting to happen.

Has Brett Myers beat up his wife lately or does he only do it when she gets caught checking out real men in Boston. Must be a Philly Thing. LOL!

Jjyankeesfag2, I was trying to hype up the Melkman to hide the fact that all your teams prospects are flops. Geez, show a little appreciation jr.!

I don't know what's MORE pathetic...the fact that you come on here everyday just to attempt to pi$$ people off or that fact that you know as much about baseball as a 4th grade girl. I feel badly for you...I really do.

Nope, just ignorant Evil Empire fans who bring nothing to the table. Sorta like Jeters defense,A-Rods clutch hitting,Posada's throwing arm, Joba and Hughes potential, and Burnetts durability. All useless and irrelevant! Et-tu JJ?

You might as well be talking in a mirror.
Posted by: nrmax88 | March 20, 2009 at 04:43 PM
wow nrmax good catch. I didn't even see him that Jeter was basically average at SS. The most ridiculous thing i saw so far in the WBC was when Davey put Jeter at short in a deciding game instead of Rollins. that's like playing Howard at first when you have Teixiera. Jeter is a below average fielder and everyone knows it. those that don't admit it are delusional. I'll readily admist Howard's inadequancies in the field but his 50HR's per year and 150 RBI's make up for it for me.
Oh and as for IDIOT, i find it best when we all just ignore. make like he's not there and he'll go away. Kind of like his team in the ALCS.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | March 20, 2009 at 05:51 PM
jjyankeesfan,
Did you see the two ridiculous misplays in the WBC game against Puerto Rico? An AVERAGE fielder gets to those. He almost cost the US the game if not for (gasp) Wright's heroics. (that's fine as long as he just does it on this stage and not in the NL East.)
Posted by: philsWSchamps | March 20, 2009 at 05:53 PM
philswschumps, at least i know my role here which is to be the foil to obnoxious bronx posters by beating them at their own game so that my teams intelligent posters don't have to waste their time dealing with their b.s. "sign everyone, our prospects rule, remember the 86 yr.curse, highest w.s. payroll ever team" that they bring to every sox post. I don't like when a moron from THE ABSOLUTE MOST IGNORANT FANBASE puts his 2 cents into a conversation when he's not invited. Your team got lucky last year with one solid starter so hurray to you and your "PANSY" fanbase!.
Posted by: RED SOX DYNASTY! | March 20, 2009 at 07:49 PM
are you just bitter that you couldn't beat the Rays and we killed them? Maybe Longoria got all his HR's out of his system against you.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | March 21, 2009 at 06:41 AM
Not as bitter as you crybabies when the Pats stomped on your Iggles in the Super Bowl. Way to run down the clock dumbass!
Posted by: RED SOX DYNASTY! | March 21, 2009 at 11:06 AM
wait did i say i was an eagles fan??? i don't remember saying that. I could be a steelers fan and then i'd be a fan of the team of the decade. haha
Posted by: philsWSchamps | March 21, 2009 at 11:51 AM
Team of the decade? Now who's delusional! Just like the Red Sox, the Patriots are the team of the decade in their sport sorta like how you're the nitwit of the decade in life!
Posted by: RED SOX DYNASTY! | March 21, 2009 at 12:47 PM
jjyankeesfan,
SO do you STILL think Jeter's a competent fielder. He killed any chance for the USA to get back in the 9th against Japan. How NO ONE is questioning Davey Johnson putting him at short for key games is ridiculous. It shows the US takes it as an exhibition where others take it seroiusly.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | March 23, 2009 at 06:38 AM
Red Sox. You see Myers? He beat his competition around pretty good in the second half of the season last year. Guess you just chose not to notice that though. Also, I am a Phils and Eagles fan. Weren't you the favorite in that Super Bowl? Who had more fans there? DEFINITELY not you. Do not attack our fan base. How many fans did the Patriots average in the 90s when no one cared? 2300 lol? You're mostly new fans. Philly is a football town (while I do not hold football as my favorite sport), and the Eagles have ALWAYS HAD A FAN BASE despite not having won a championship since 1960. The Pats are the team of the decade though, i don't know what that other phillies guy was talking about.

Like I said...you clearly have nothing even remotely intelligent to contribute. Thanks once again for making an assinine comment to exemplify my point.
Life is too short to come on here to do nothing but antagonize and intentionally try and pi$$ people off like you do. You're a sad little boy who needs to grow up, seriously. Like I said before though...what do you expect from someone who doesn't even know the meaning of word, "dynasty". Guess they haven't covered that one yet in your english class.

Rollins is clearly the better fielder of the two and if I was Davey, I would have had Rollins at SS and Jeter at DH instead of the reverse. However, to blame Jeter for the loss is ridiculous. The ERA of the US pitching staff was horrible. Wright and Roberts also made key errors. The loss was a group effort.
