« Gary Sheffield Rumors: Thursday | Main | Rosenthal On Sheffield, Repko, McPherson »
11:00pm: Gwynn has been placed on waivers.
2:24pm: Brewers GM Doug Melvin told Haudricourt that there will be an announcement concerning Gwynn Jr. on Friday. It appears he will be placed on waivers.
1:33pm: According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Brewers have signed outfielder Jason Tyner to their Triple-A Nashville roster.
Tyner, 31, has spent time in the majors with the Mets, Rays, Twins and Indians. He spent all of last year in Triple-A, where he hit .248 with 12 doubles, a homer and 18 RBI in just over 300 at-bats. Haudricourt surmises that this signing could result in the Brewers waiving Tony Gwynn Jr, who is out of options and unlikely to make the final roster.

Would the Padres make a claim on him simply because of his name?

Blast! Now I have to redo my NL Central predictions!

Good luck to "The Liner" Tyner.

yeah, too bad his streak isn't still alive. i remember when he finally hit that home run, it made sportcenter's top 10.

If Gwynn Jr. accepts a AAA assignment anywhere, the Padres seem like the place it would be, and I don't see why the Padres wouldn't give him at least that. He'd be the first one called up if Gerut, Giles, Headley, Floyd, or Hairston hit the DL. And if Hairston starts off slow, I could see Gwynn taking his place on the roster as an extra outfielder and a left-handed bat off the bench to complement Edgar Gonzalez and Henry Blanco with Cliff Floyd.

I don't agree with you WestCoast the first up if any outfielder was put on the DL would be Will Venable. Venable I think takes priority before Gwynn Jr.

TG Jr,
thanks again for giving us a magical season...
Sincerly,

TGj, career .598 OPS, 9 extra base hits in 242 at-bats and 18 BB. Those are bad numbers. He is not his father.

It is great to see an organization give Jsson Tyner the chance he deserves. He is an athlete who has never been given a real chance, simply because he does not hit home-runs. Now that the game is changing in the post steroid era, perhaps the non-home-hitter will be given greater recognition for his contribution.

Tyner got far too great of a chance with the Twins. He's a pathetic offensive player... Check out Gleeman's article from a few years back on why he's one of the worst offensive outfielders in the last 50 years (It's about half down the page on this portion of his archive):

Tyner's OPS differential between league average for his position is the second worst among outfielders over the last 50 years. The Mets using a first-round pick on him is more tragic than anything Shakespeare could've written. :)

Forget homerun power Tyner lacks the power to hit any extra base hits. He had 13 extra base hits last year. Alot of guys do that in a month
