Mets DFA Casey Fossum

According to David Lennon of Newsday, the Mets designated Casey Fossum for assignment after Sunday's 8-1 loss to the Nationals. Fossum gave up 4 hits and 1 run and notched 4 strikeouts in 3.3 innings of relief this year for the Mets.

The Mets have called up lefthander Ken Takahashi to take Fossum's place. The 40-year-old Takahashi has a 0.77 ERA in six appearances for Triple-A Buffalo.

Not that I didn't before, but I really respect Omar Minaya after this film I watched last night. I know plenty of people in Houston may hold a grudge against him over the Beltran signing, which there really isnt a reason to, but he is a great communicator with his players. No doubt. He finally has a back end of the bullpen, hopefully he can win something this year. Well lose to the Astros of course. Having a Latin father and such gives me way to relate to the guy. Casey Fossum used to be pretty promising.

Thank God. I'd take Lee Guetterman at this point coming out of the pen over Fossum. The guy is a bum. I just can't wait for Takahashi to come in against the Phils this weekend.

Week in Review? or was there not enough going on this week?

We're in trouble right now. I told all my fellow Met fans all along signing Oliver Perez was a HORRIBLE move. Also, relying on John Maine to do anything is risky and relying on Pelf to improve upon last year was risky too. We need another quality arm in the rotation, and Ollie needs to be in AAA until he learns how to throw strikes. Maine cannot go to the bullpen, we need people to throw strikes out there, not walk the bases loaded and give up a double. The problem is we're pretty much stuck with what we've got, we just have to pray for a turnaround. Maine has the velocity, he just needs to get his mechanics straightened out and control. Ollie is hopeless, he absolutely sucks. I'm tired of Ollie, thinking about him makes me angry.

"Ollie needs to be in AAA until he learns how to throw strikes."

He could be in the ML for a long time then, since he has never had decent command of the strike zone in his entire career and gets wilder year by year.

Ollie has obviously been a little off so far; but, to say he sucks is ridiculous. It's been FOUR STARTS! I would still rather have him than D-Lo, Wolf, etc. Ollie is still only 27 years old, and is just entering his 'baseball prime'. Ollie could still be great, even if he occasionally walks a bunch in a game.
However, if Perez continues to struggle for 5 or 6 more starts I wouldn't mind using him out of the pen. This way, he could pitch in almost every game against the Phillies and Braves, whom he dominates against. This would open up a spot in the rotation for Pedro, Niese, or Gee (preferably Pedro) and strengthen the pen.

Ollie has not options, has seniority, can't be sent to triple A unless he agrees to it. Ollie has always had nasty stuff to go along with his location problem and wildness. Problem this year is his velocity is not where it should be. That's the main difference. And no one seems to know why.

Maine has the velocity, but not the location yet. Pelfry, I think, will be fine.

We need our starters (not named Johan) to start pitching 6-7 strong innings or we're going to be in deep trouble......

" Problem this year is his velocity is not where it should be. That's the main difference. And no one seems to know why."

Sudden velocity drops and injuries go hand in hand, since it doesnt look like Ollie changed his mechanics.

If he doesn't accept, he'll be moved to the bullpen and not pitch for a week.

Watched the last ST game of the year for the Mets that Ollie pitched in that his FB was only in the mid 80's to upper 80's and his is usually in the lower 90's I thought also. Did the usual physical that a player has to take before signing a contract show anything regarding his arm or anything?

Something has got to be done, he still has more talent than Dontrelle Willis, but if he (or the Mets) don't get to figuring out soon what is wrong with him, is going to be a carbon copy.

Perez's problem is the exact same as Willis's. Too much movement in the wind-up, I mean what the hell is that little foot wiggle thing anyway? The Mets need to bite the bullet and shut him down for a 15-day DL stint while working with a pitching coach everyday. Then they can decide whether he can get back in sync or if he has to be shut down for longer while they clean up his delivery. It would suck to lose him for that long but what if he turns into Zito and has a 17-loss season with an ERA of 7? How is that better?

"Fossum gave up 4 hits and 1 run and notched 4 strikeouts in 3.3 innings of relief this year for the Mets. "

I've seen pretty much these same stats listed in every article about Fossum being DFAed. But since we're talking about a guy losing his job, don't you think mentioning the four walks in less than four innings and the 2.00 WHIP might be more relevant, being as those are the things that got him canned?

You obviously don't follow the Mets. Oliver Perez is a non-stop rollercoaster ride, and up-and-down pitchers like that do not deserve $12 million. His age does not matter - the guy has almost five years of major league experience at this point. You are right in saying that he might be great at some point, but how long could it possibly take for this guy to get it and be a consistent pitcher?

I'd rather get consistent 3-run quality starts from pitchers than get a shutout followed by a 4-inning, 7 walk, 6 run fest against Washington or Pittsburgh. It's pathetic how unreliable this guy is.
