- Become a fan of MLB Trade Rumors on Facebook! We're up to 9,828 fans.
- Jed Lowrie will have wrist surgery, and Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe learned that he could return by the All-Star break. Julio Lugo, recovering from knee surgery, should be ready to take over soon.
- ESPN's Jorge Arangure Jr. says "negotiations between the New York Yankees and Cuban exile prospect Felix Perez have broken down because of the outfielder's problem in obtaining a visa." Perez was set for a bonus north of $3MM, but questions have been raised about his age. The Yanks may have interest in a couple of other Cuban players, Noel Arguelles and Jose Iglesias, once they're declared free agents.
- According to Phil Miller of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Torii Hunter would seemingly like to finish his career with the Twins.
- MLB.com's Alyson Footer says sending Drew Sutton to the Reds for Jeff Keppinger was "a great, great deal for the Astros." Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle explains why the move was made.
- Aaron Gleeman weighs in on the Twins' decision to swap out Philip Humber for Juan Morillo.
- David Pinto of Baseball Musings gives his opinion of the Ryan Zimmerman extension.
- South Side Sox and Sox Machine discuss the minor tiff between Ozzie Guillen and Nick Swisher.
- Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News says the Dodgers signed pitcher Chuck Tiffany to a minor league deal. They'd traded him to the Rays in '06 as part of the Danys Baez deal, and the Rays released him in March of this year.
Shut up Torii Hunter. If you wanted to be a Twin for life, you wouldn't have signed elsewhere.

Dorfmac, I 2nd that wholeheartedly. The Twins put enough money for a 3 year deal and Torii could've gone out again for another deal after that.

I third that.

And I wholeheartedly Fourth It.

i fifth that statement
Posted by: allstarlineup | April 20, 2009 at 11:23 AM
So by the same logic, you 5 also hate Ken Griffey Jr. for doing what he did.
I think its good that a guy wants to go get paid somewhere, and then come back where he started. What's wrong with that?

"So by the same logic, you 5 also hate Ken Griffey Jr. for doing what he did."
To be honest, I was never a fan of Griffey.

Am I the only person who gets incredibly annoyed by the fact the mlbtr staff repeatedly links to Richard Justice's blog and calls it journalism? RJ is known for his high level of sarcasm throughout his blogging. To take many of these posts and report them as true opinion on the subject matter is silly. In the past there have been references to a post where he said "this team has no flaws". Come on. Are you really reading the articles, Tim, or are you just so eager to inundate the site with "information" that you fail to read the content?
In other news, here's my 2 cents on the Sutton deal. Sutton was a 26 y/o AAA player who, respectfully, projects as, at most, a utility infielder. He might get a cup of coffee this year with September call ups, but odds are, he's going to be a perennial AAAA player, who may steal a roster spot one spring with a nice performance. Maybe we're all wrong and he'll be the second coming of Michael Young (who was similarly a late bloomer) but that is more the exception than the rule. At the end of the day they traded a prospect from a thin farm system for a known commodity with 4 years of club control left. I'm all for it, and believe that Kepp could actually slide over and play short next year for Houston. If he gives them solid defense with offense in the range of .270 with 10+ homers, that will exceed the average production from that spot over the past 5-10 seasons there.
Call it what it is: Drayton refuses to put a "rebuilding" team on the field, so you're going to see the Astros littered with the Hampton/Ortiz types for the next 1-2 seasons. Don't confuse Ed Wade for a bad GM. He's been given an impossible task - to remain competitive without rebuilding, on a strict budget, with a roster of bad contracts (see Lee, Carlos). He is doing everything possible, while Bobby Heck is charged with rejuvenating a depleted talent pipeline with consecutive deep, talented drafts.
At the end of the day, Astros fans like myself know, in our heart of hearts, that the next 2-3 years will be bland. There are no playoffs coming, but if the boys can keep it interesting we'll stay tuned. The real problem is that even if the talent pool starts to produce, the current stars will be well into their decline. In 2012 will Berkman, Lee, and Oswalt have anything left to go along with Castro, Seaton, Bogusevic, et al? My gut tells me no. Painful as it is to say, the Astros need to have a 5 year plan similar to that of Syd in the movie Big Daddy: "Don't Die"

keppinger can not play shortstop so your theory is flawed of him being the astros ss next year.

Yeah, but Griffey didn't say that he wanted to finish his career in Seattle when he had a large number of years still remaining on his contract with Cincinnati. Huge, huge difference.

Congrats on the Facebook thing Tim. You officially draw better than the Florida Marlins ;-)
"Yeah, but Griffey didn't say that he wanted to finish his career in Seattle when he had a large number of years still remaining on his contract with Cincinnati."
There were whispers for years. Besides, Griffey was more focused on staying healthy during those years.

Keppinger has played more games at short than any other position. Were you not watching the 881 innings he played there last year for your team with a .980 Fielding %

LOL. fielding % ? give me a break why dont you use stats that actually matter.
2008 plus/minus

keppinger 2nd to last.
keppinger has no range AT ALL. its pretty easy to have a decent fielding % when you can only get to the balls right at you.
Posted by: redsfan | April 20, 2009 at 02:13 PM
Maybe Keppinger can play 3rd and 2nd next year. We do have Tommy Manzella if he can figure out how to hit this year. He hasn't been awful hitting early on.

You ridiculous stat nerd-geeks make me laugh.
If your team has a smaller payroll, you're going to have to deal sometimes with less than ideal players at positions, until the youngin's make it to the bigs. Enjoy the game, and hope your GM doesn't ravage your minor league system.
Swish needs to shut up and focus on playing. He dogged it like none-other when he struggled. I'm happy he's gone. Even if we got a bad Uribe-like replacement in Betemit.
Posted by: whitesoxfan424 | April 20, 2009 at 04:39 PM
My bad, Swish didn't even say anything about Ozzie or the Sox. Still happy he's gone, terrible CF.
Posted by: whitesoxfan424 | April 20, 2009 at 04:42 PM
Between Carlos Gomez and Denard Span I don't think the Twins will need you to end your career with them Torii Hunter.

"My bad, Swish didn't even say anything about Ozzie or the Sox. Still happy he's gone, terrible CF."
If Kenny traded for Swisher with the intention of having him play CF long term, then he's a moron. Swish got plenty of time in CF with the A's, where he showed that he needs to either be playing 1B or a corner OF position. Plenty.

Another complete dipshit who fancies himself a scout, thinks he alone has an eye for talent and the game of baseball that none of us have, and thinks stats are stupid. People like you are hypocrites, you talk about how stat heads like to look at stats and never watch games, when in reality, us stat heads watch games and use stats to better understand the games we watch, whereas you guys just watch the games, think you understand what you are watching, in actuality you have no idea, and you go about making a fool of yourself. The stathead simply uses multiple sources of information, and you just use one. Amazing how people are afraid of what they don't understand. Instead of trying to understand, they get all defensive and generalize a whole group of people more intelligent then themselves.

"The Astros traded Drew Sutton because they want to be champions in 2009 and because they believe Jeff Keppinger is more likely to contribute to that championship than Drew Sutton."
This was Justice being sarcastic? If so, then yeah, I missed it.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | April 20, 2009 at 06:50 PM
I would hope it was sarcasm. Keppinger is a nice role player, but he was exposed as an every day player last year - .310 OBP, no pop, no speed, little range defensively..
I'm not saying Sutton a guy who is going to echo memories of Joe Morgan and the Big Red Machine, but he did hit .317/.408/.523 with 20 SB and 20 HR and has the potential to be an above average 2B offensively. At 25, he's not a pup, but at least he has some upside whereas Keppinger has none.
Just the type of deal an organization with a barren farm system should not be making.

Whats wrong with staying in Minny? He was going to get paid there. why go sign someplace else and then turn around and say he wants to end his career there?
Posted by: allstarlineup | April 20, 2009 at 10:52 PM
I would say that, as an everyday reader of RJustice, that yes, that is pure sarcasm. The Astros know they are not championship contenders, but as I said in my first post, Drayton will continue to fill out the roster in a patchwork manner so as to veil the team as "competitive".

RE: Keppinger at SS. The statement I rebutted was a very general "Keppinger can't play short". If he was so atrocious at short, I don't understand why he has played there the majority of his career. He has been solid. My assertion was that he could be another plug to fill a hole in the organization until they truly move forward. I stand by that. Manzella is a downgraded version of Adam Everett, and with him being our top SS prospect, I don't see the team elevating him above a more established offensive player. Lest you forget, the Astros have one of the worst offenses in all of baseball due to gaping holes at... well, almost everywhere. Chris Johnson seems to have a beat on the 3B job for next year and Matsui is still under (that ridiculous) contract, so the only every day spot that makes sense is SS. Is he an every day player? Not on most squads, but for an underwhelming Houston team, he may just be their everyday SS next year, with spot starts around the rest of the diamond.

Proves what a moron Williams was for trading for him, then not realizing he wasn't a CF THEN giving him away huh? Chisox stuck with aging Thome, Dye and Konerko power bats and only Queintin is young w/power and gave away Swisher, just because neither Quillen, nor Williams could see that Swisher was not a CF and then went into 2009 with a trio of AAAA castoffs? Give me a break...
Posted by: johns | April 21, 2009 at 10:45 AM
Johns - Don't comment on things about which you have no clue. I'm sure you meant to say aging but still productive, Thome, Dye, Konerko - of which Thome and Dye's deals are up next year, so not stuck. And young power of Quentin, Fields, Ramirez with Viciedo, Beckham and Flowers waiting in the wings. Don't feel bad about your mistakes.
