Rosenthal On Penny, Bay, Brandon Wood

The latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports...

  • Rosenthal suggests Cecil Cooper of the Astros may be the first manager fired; he says the team's veterans "do not care for Cooper."  He's in the last year of his contract.
  • With a comeback season for the Red Sox, Brad Penny could be in line for a lucrative free agent deal after the season.  One executive told Rosenthal Penny had the least amount of structural issues in his arm compared to similar free agents last winter.
  • The Red Sox are said to be "maintaining a quiet dialogue" with Jason Bay, who is eligible for free agency after the season.  Rosenthal says there's no acrimony or deadline; the sides are just trying to determine Bay's value.  It's a tricky calculation for corner outfielders, and the market will be flush after the season.
  • Angels infielder Brandon Wood appears big league ready.  Will the Angels trade Chone Figgins this summer to make room, or at least let Figgins leave as a free agent after the season?  There are plenty of ways to sort out the situation, but Wood deserves to play.
  • Dodgers reliever Ronald Belisario, signed out of the Venezuelan winter league, drew strong praise from one scout.
  • One scout had this to say regarding Emilio Bonifacio: "He's just a guy."

I thought Brandon Wood was a SS. Although Aybar is the better defensive SS.

I don't think the Angels should trade Figgins just yet, because its always nice to have depth.

They gotta get Wood into the lineup somehow. The kid can mash.

Wood has played short but can also play third. Has 42 games at 3B in the majors and 31 at shortstop. I would like to see them give him a shot with some consistent at bats. Lets see what he can do.

Considering the entire Astros team is made up of mostly old veterans, then that doesn't look good for ol' Coop...

The issue with Penny is not just his shoulder, but his conditioning.

Look at him in the picture in Rosenthal's article and you can see he seems to be even larger than he was with the Dodgers.

Until Penny takes on a more serious approach to his conditioning he will never make the next step in development, which for him was going deeper into games. Plus, his lack of conditioning just makes the likelihood of re-injury that much more likely.

Bellesario has looked great all spring and in his short stint in the big leagues. Its still early, but he could be legit. He was a nice free agent signing for the Dodgers.

That is sad about Coop, but you've got to have a guy who can motivate folks.

"I thought Brandon Wood was a SS. Although Aybar is the better defensive SS."

From what I've read, it seems like Wood can either be a decent defensive, plus offensive shortstop, or a plus defensive third baseman that's just solid offensively. He's better defensively at third, but his bat is more impressive as a shortstop and he's solid there as well.

I think they should just rotate Wood, Figgins and Aybar in the SS/3B spots while seeing exactly what they have in Kendry Morales.

If Morales doesn't prove to be a good option at first base, then look around and see if you can find a better one by moving Figgins.

I still think that some kind of Figgins/Konerko swap could be really interesting for both sides, it'd fill an offensive need for both teams. But there's no way that the Angels sneak Matthews into that deal, too.

The best situation at this point is to keep Figgins at 3B and move/bench/send Aybar to Triple A while giving Wood a shot to be the everyday SS. Wood is an above average defender at SS and has the batting upside to be an absolute force. Think Cal Ripken-lite with a chance for more power. He isn't as good defensively as Aybar, but he is no liability with the glove and much better with the bat.

Meanwhile, Figgins is an elite level defender at 3B and provides something crucial to the Angels success. OBP. Outside Abreu, Vlad and theoretically Napoli, the Angels have a lot of high contact/low walk guys. Replacing him with a guy like Wood would hurt that dynamic.

As for Bellisario, where the hell did they find this guy? He has some of the nastiest stuff I have ever seen.

Figgins for Konerko with the Sox eating some portion of Paulie's salary? I agree with you on Matthews. He's not going near such a deal.

I'd love it if they let Wood start playing first in AAA.

I'm getting very tired of watching Morals suck balls at the plate with multiple runners on. I think he leads the league in Leaving Runners on Base!

Put Morales on the bench or back to AAA and don't trade away any depth.

Whoa whoa whoa. Why, why, whhyyyy would you move a guy like Wood, who can play 3B/2B/SS to 1B. Whyyy? SS prospects are the holy grail of MLB. Holy. Freaking. Grail.

His bat wont translate well to 1B.

And the ONLY way Morales should be benched is if the Angels bring in a short term 1B via trade. Morales has plenty of upside.

Yeah, there's no way that you move Wood to first base. Just because he has power doesn't mean he profiles well there, and I'm not sure how you justify moving him there when he's already a solid defensive player at both positions on the left side of the infield.

And as good as Wood may be, he's no Cal Ripken-lite. Ripken was better defensively, and has much better plate discipline than Wood. I think that Jhonny Peralta is a pretty fair comparison for Wood, although Wood may have a bit more home run power.

Brandon Wood isn't ready. He can't hit big league pitching. Takes some awkard looking hacks at the plate. Good defense though but has to learn how to hit the curve.

In all honesty, there's no MLB player that you can compare Brandon Wood to completely because he's like none other before him.

He's like Cal Ripken in his build, but he has a stronger arm while Ripken has a better glove and more range.

He's like Hanley Ramirez offensively, except that Wood has more power and less speed than Hanley, though it should be noted Wood can swipe 20 bags a year.

Wood's like Jhonny Peralta, except better in pretty much every way...

If they keep Wood down in AAA for the full year he quite possibly could hit 50+ HR's which would set an Angels record. How many SS do you know have that kind of power? The answer is zero. Not since A-Rod moved to 3B.

In a full season in the bigs, right now Wood is capable of .260 35 DB 35 HR 20 SB.....as a relative rookie. Give him a year or two and we could see an BA closer to .280 and 40+ HR....from a shortstop. It's proof of his athletecism that he could shift over to 3B and still be sparkling on defense.

Actually, Wood posted a higher batting average against curveballs than any other pitch in his time in LA last year.

I'm not sure exactly what that means, considering that overall he batted .200 (30 for 150).

But I've heard similar concerns about his pitch recognition. Most scouts seem to think that he'll develop that ability enough to excel at the next level.

Scotty, you're overrating Wood, by a lot..

"He's like Hanley Ramirez offensively, except that Wood has more power and less speed than Hanley, though it should be noted Wood can swipe 20 bags a year."

Did you just compare Wood as a hitter to Hanley Ramirez, one of the very best hitters in the game? I was just thinking that Vitters looks like the next Vladimir Guerrero, too.. Come on..

Wood's plate discipline and pitch recognition can't touch Ramirez, and there's no way that Wood has nearly the contact hit tool that Ramirez has either.

"Wood's like Jhonny Peralta, except better in pretty much every way..."

Except for the fact that Wood has a career .212 OBP in the majors and Peralta was arguably the best shortstop in the AL last season.

When CAN be better than Peralta, but at this point you're claim is simply false.

Scotty: Put down the cool-aid bro. Clearly it's been spiked.

"When CAN be better than Peralta, but at this point you're claim is simply false."

That has to be one of the worst sentences I've ever typed.

WOOD can be better than Peralta, but at this point your claim is simply false. There we go..

"As for Bellisario, where the hell did they find this guy? He has some of the nastiest stuff I have ever seen.

Posted by: AA | April 15, 2009 at 11:25 AM"

Agreed.. I tried to find his stats a few days ago and couldn't. Now I know why.

He was throwing 96 mph two seamers down the pipe and no one could hit it.

Nasty stuff.

Apparently the guy had a bit of a bad reputation off the field and with his work ethic when he was a prospect in the Dodgers' farm system 6-7 years back, but his stuff has always apparently been pretty good, and he seems to have harnessed it right now. He could make that bullpen crazy good, considering they have a stud in Broxton anchoring it.

scribble, he was in the Pirates org. the dodgers scouted him when he was a minor league FA, they signed him. Even though he lost 2 weeks of ST because of visa issues, they took him in the pen and he looks great so far.

Actually, we were both wrong, I meant Florida. He was with Pittsburgh the past two seasons, but back when he was actually a prospect still, in Florida, he still had a big arm but there were whispers of character issues. If he's got those figured out, then apparently scouts have always thought pretty highly of this guys raw stuff.

the angels problem is they need to be loaded for the playoffs.
at least they are playing morales finally, but by not playing wood they risk the growing pains at two crucial spots (aybar is an A talent too but still open to wounds).
this could all backfire in the playoffs.
same with their bench. great talent, but don't you think they could benefit from having character vets in that locker-room; guys like a jamey carroll or eckstein or maybe even a ryan garko.
like their uniforms, they need more than one colour.

Peralta the best SS in the AL? Really? Maybe for fantasy purposes. The guy is a garbage defender and needs to learn how to walk. Jeter was better both defensively (that doesn't bode well for Peralta) and offensively.

Anyway, Wood projects to be much better than Peralta at even 75% of his ceiling, if only because he actually knows how to play defense.

"same with their bench. great talent, but don't you think they could benefit from having character vets in that locker-room; guys like a jamey carroll or eckstein or maybe even a ryan garko."

They already have plenty of "character vets" in the locker room. Even Robb Quinlan fits that profile, and he can actually hit, while those guys are not particularly offensive weapons.

i think the best case senario would be for the Angels to trade Brandon Wood for a good young pitcher. I know they have an alright staff when healthy, but they are fooling themselves if they think that they don't need 5 ML Starters. I think the Giants are a great match there. They could either go after a package of Jonathan Sanchez and others, or they could try to get 2 or 3 of their solid pitching prospects that are either in the ML or will be soon. I could see maybe a match working out there.

Another option would be to trade Chone Figgins to the White Sox, if the Sox felt he could man CF. They have a young arm, maybe a Lance Broadway, or a Contreras, Betemit and prospect?
