A's Designate Ben Copeland For Assignment

According to MLB.com's Noah Coslov, the A's have designated outfielder Ben Copeland for assignment.

Copeland was selected by the A's this winter in the Rule 5 draft.  He spent the first few weeks of the 2009 season on the disabled list with a shoulder issue, and wasn't given a plate appearance once he was activated on May 5.  The 25-year-old hit .261/.334/.417 in 372 at-bats last year for Double-A Connecticut.

Maybe I don't understand the rule. Doesn't a rule 5 player go back to the original team if he is removed from the major league roster?

A, by my understanding, he has to first be offered back to the original team for $25,000.

I think he'll be sent through waivers, at which point any team can claim him. Of course, he'd have to stick on their MLB roster all season.

something about him seems like he wont be successful. maybe it was the low average or maybe it was because he's 25 in AA.
